Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Respectable Burial also highlights how important a role Montreal played in Canada's history. The cemetery is the final resting place of politician Alexander Galt, poet F.R. Scott, hockey star Howie Morenz, explorer David Thompson, bank presidents, renegades, hangmen, and victims of the Titanic. This history of a model rural cemetery, an innovator in perpetual care and proprietor of the first crematorium in Canada, illustrates changing attitudes to burial and commemoration - including the relationships between Protestantism, Romanticism, and death. Young also shows how the cemetery, a site of great natural beauty that helped inspire Frederick Law Olmsted's adjacent Mount Royal Park, became a much-loved public urban space and examines how the evolution of its landscaping, architecture, and use reflect changing attitudes to the place of women, recreation, heritage, and the environment. Incorporating a rich collection of archival illustrations, walking maps, and a colour photo essay by photographer Geoffrey James, Respectable Burial will appeal to anyone interested in Canadian history, parks, and cities.

Book The Foreign Burial of American War Dead

Download or read book The Foreign Burial of American War Dead written by Chris Dickon and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2011-09-29 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Normandy, Flanders Field and other overseas cemeteries of the American Battle Monument Commission (ABMC) are well known. However, lesser-known burial sites of American war dead exist all over the world--in Australia and across the Pacific Rim, in Canada and Mexico, Libya and Spain, most of Europe and as far north as the Russian Arctic. This is the history of American soldiers buried abroad since the American Revolution. It traces the evolution of American attitudes and practices about war dead and provides the names and locations of those still buried abroad in non-ABMC locations.

Book Families

Download or read book Families written by Randal Teague and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2019-03-19 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Families: Where We Each Begin,,/i> Randal Teague chronicles his journey from relatively humble beginnings to his launchpad for a career in law, higher education, and politics. By subjecting family lore and legend to the harsh scrutiny of research, he discovers a somewhat different self through facts and circumstances shared with him by his extended family and friends. This memoir provides more than just information. It describes in a convincing way how to pass knowledge of what came before us to those whom we know and those whom we will never know. With this collaborative approach, Teague expanded his knowledge of himself. Some family lore was true, but some was not. Lost facts were recovered. Memories grew in number and depth and lit the corners of his mind. Loved ones long passed returned to his daily thoughts and evening dreams. And he came to understand, as a famous author observed, that you can love completely without complete understanding .
