Download or read book Durham North Carolina written by Stephen E. Massengill and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1997-07-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With more than two hundred vintage postcard images, Durham, North Carolina, captures much of what life was like in the rapidly growing city during the first half of the twentieth century. This rare collection of postcards represents many aspects of Durham, especially the bustling downtown district. In the early 1900s, Durham was a small but budding town with a population of less than seven thousand. However, a tremendous number of people began to pour into the city, and by 1930 the population had increased to more than fifty thousand. That explosion of growth was attributable in large measure to the rapid expansion of the tobacco and textile industries, as well as to the endowment of nearby Trinity College (1924) by tobacco magnate James B. Duke, which lead to the institution's renaming as the now-renowned Duke University. In only a few years, the town's skyline began to be transformed with the construction of modern office buildings and grand mansions.

Book Exploring Durham History

Download or read book Exploring Durham History written by Philip Nixon and published by Breedon Books Publishing. This book was released on 2005-06-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring Durham History is a subtle blend of contemporary photography and historical fact. Tinged with folklore and mystery it takes us on an exciting journey through the history of The Land of the Prince Bishops. Lesser-known sites are balanced with a selection of the more familiar choices. The Prince Bishops of Durham were not only spiritual leaders: their military prowess was also highly respected, and both aspects are now remembered in the rich legacy of their fortifications and the castles of their influential supporters. County Durham was at the forefront of the Industrial Revolution. This was a time that brought great prosperity for some, but hardship for others. The coming of the railway had farreaching consequences for the north-east, and the encroachment of industrialisation shaped the destiny of the region into the 20th century and beyond. The colourful threads that run through County Durham history have produced a rich tapestry of heritage that is portrayed in all its glory in Exploring Durham History. This great value paperback edition is sure to appeal to all local history enthusiasts and is a visual treat as well as a fascinating read.

Book A History of Durham Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Durham Classic Reprint written by F. S. Eden and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Durham My objects in writing this little book are to contribute a modicum of help to the movement in favour of vacation schools and school excursions, which has become so marked a feature of recent educational development, and to further the study of local history as part of the school curriculum, so far as the regulations of the Board of Education, at present, admit It is, happily, unnecessary to expatiate upon the benefits, mental and physical, which may be reaped by our children (evidenced by the excellent results already attained) by the judicious use of vacation schools and school journeys and excursions, because the subject has been thoroughly dealt with in vol. xxi of the series of Special Reports on Educational Subjects, issued in 1907 by the Board of Education. With regard to the study of local history, there are, I believe, two methods which, combined, may enable school authorities and teachers to got good results. Book excerpt: Run into the history of the Bull City! There is much history in the Bull City, and some of it can be found within these pages. How Bull Durham smoking tobacco put Durham, North Carolina, on the map. How a plastic cow and an oversized flag cut the city council down to size. How it felt to travel back in time at the Duke Homestead. How sportsman Al Mann and "Mom" Ruby Planck left indelible marks on their hometown. Journalist and local historian Jim Wise shows you that while Durham's stories are its own, readers may find the people, places and truths in them resonate with hometowns everywhere.
