Book Durability of Bridge Structures

Download or read book Durability of Bridge Structures written by Khaled Mahmoud and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-09-12 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Thursday evening, May 23, 2013, the Interstate 5 Bridge over the Skagit River in Washington state collapsed due to impact by an oversize truck, dumping vehicles and people into the water. Fortunately, the bridge is located in a rural area and nobody was killed in the accident, but three people were rescued after their cars plunged into the frigid water of the Skagit River. According to Washington state officials, the bridge was inspected last year and was not structurally deficient, but collapsed because of apparent impact from an oversize truck. Nevertheless, the collapse of the steel truss bridge renewed appeals for greater investment in the nation’s aging infrastructure. These appeals are echoed throughout the bridge engineering community worldwide, as the condition of deteriorated bridges worsens with increasing traffic loads combined with lack of proper maintenance. Bridge engineers from different countries shared their experience toward achieving durable bridge structures, during the 7th New York City Bridge Conference, held on August 26-27, 2013. This book contains select papers that were presented at the conference. These peer-reviewed papers are valuable contributions and of archival quality in bridge engineering.

Book Fourth International Conference on Current and Future Trends in Bridge Design Construction and Maintenance

Download or read book Fourth International Conference on Current and Future Trends in Bridge Design Construction and Maintenance written by B. Barr and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 2006 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a state-of-the-art reference, an exchange of innovative experience, creative thinking and industry forecasts. This volume presents the proceedings of the fourth international conference in this series based in the Asia Pacific region, in Kuala Lumpur in October 2005 and is applicable to all sectors of the bridge engineering community. BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE AND FUTURE PERFORMANCE The Institution of Civil Engineers has collaborated with internationally renowned bridge engineers to organise three successful conferences to celebrate the enormous achievements made in the field of bridge engineering in recent years. As a discipline, bridge engineering not only requires knowledge and experience of bridge design and construction techniques but must also deal with increasing challenges posed by the need to maintain the long-term performance of structures throughout an extended service life. In many parts of the world natural phenomena such as seismic events can cause significant damage to force major repairs or reconstruction. Therefore, it is appropriate that the first plenary session of this conference is entitled Engineering for Seismic Performance. READERSHIP This compilation of papers will benefit practising civil and structural engineers in consulting firms and government agencies, bridge contractors, research institutes, universities and colleges. In short, it is of importance to all engineers involved in any aspect of the design, construction and repair, maintenance and refurbishment of bridges.

Book Durability of Post tensioning Tendons

Download or read book Durability of Post tensioning Tendons written by fib Fédération internationale du béton and published by fib Fédération internationale du béton. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In some countries durability problems with post-tensioning tendons have in the past led to fairly restrictive regulations. Improvements to execution procedures have been developed since, and new or improved prestressing systems have been proposed, too. This development was, of course, subject of discussions in fib Commission 9 Reinforcing and Prestressing Materials and Sytems and in IABSE Working Commission 3 Concrete Structures. It was decided to organise a workshop with the aim to review the different aspects of the problems encountered and to discuss solutions available today. Keynote speakers from various countries were invited to contribute. Their papers are published in this bulletin, grouped together under the following themes: Inventory and condition (6 papers) Investigation and repair (5 papers) Technical progress (4 papers) Strategies for improvement (6 papers) Supported by the international federation for structural concrete fib, and the international association for bridge and structural engineering IABSE, the workshop took place on 15-16 November 2001 at Ghent University, celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Magnel Laboratory for Concrete Research, whose director also chaired the Scientific Committee and edited the bulletin. It needs to be emphasised that in the bulletin invited experts present their individual views. Although not yet discussed in any of the association's working bodies, the highly topical contents of the bulletin is believed to be of general interest to fib's members and to document a starting point for future work in this field. Therefore, the Council of fib agreed to exceptionally publish these papers within fib's series of Bulletins.

Book Fundamentals of Durable Reinforced Concrete

Download or read book Fundamentals of Durable Reinforced Concrete written by Mark G. Richardson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Durability failures in reinforced concrete structures are wasteful of resources and energy. The introduction to practice of European Standard EN 206-1 represents a significant shift in emphasis on the need to explicitly consider each potential durability threat when specifying and producing concrete. Fundamentals of Durable Reinforced Concrete presents the fundamental aspects of concrete durability including reinforcement corrosion, carbonation, chloride ingress, alkali-aggregate reaction, freeze/thaw damage, sulphate attack, chemical attack, cracking, abrasion and weathering. The background to the durability exposure classes in EN 206-1 is also explained. Future directions in performance-based specifications and mathematical modelling of degradation are presented. This book will be of particular interest to specifiers applying the principles of the new European Standard EN 206-1 for the first time, to postgraduate researchers in mathematical modelling of degradation mechanisms, to undergraduates of engineering, architecture and building technology, and students of advanced concrete technology who require a concise source of reference on concrete durability.
