Book Duplex Stainless Steels

Download or read book Duplex Stainless Steels written by Iris Alvarez-Armas and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-01-16 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Duplex Stainless Steels (DSSs) are chromium-nickel-molybdenum-iron alloys that are usually in proportions optimized for equalizing the volume fractions of austenite and ferrite. Due to their ferritic-austenitic microstructure, they possess a higher mechanical strength and a better corrosion resistance than standard austenitic steels. This type of steel is now increasing its application and market field due to its very good properties and relatively low cost. This book is a review of the most recent progress achieved in the last 10 years on microstructure, corrosion resistance and mechanical strength properties, as well as applications, due to the development of new grades. Special attention will be given to fatigue and fracture behavior and to proposed models to account for mechanical behavior. Each subject will be developed in chapters written by experts recognized around the international industrial and scientific communities. The use of duplex stainless steels has grown rapidly in the last 10 years, particularly in the oil and gas industry, chemical tankers, pulp and paper as well as the chemical industry. In all these examples, topics like welding, corrosion resistance and mechanical strength properties (mainly in the fatigue domain) are crucial. Therefore, the update of welding and corrosion properties and the introduction of topics like texture effects, fatigue and fracture strength properties, and mechanical behavior modeling give this book specific focus and character.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stainless steels represent a quite interesting material family, both from a scientific and commercial point of view, following to their excellent combination in terms of strength and ductility together with corrosion resistance. Thanks to such properties, stainless steels have been indispensable for the technological progress during the last century and their annual consumption increased faster than other materials. They find application in all these fields requiring good corrosion resistance together with ability to be worked into complex geometries. Despite to their diffusion as a consolidated materials, many research fields are active regarding the possibility to increase stainless steels mechanical properties and corrosion resistance by grain refinement or by alloying by interstitial elements. At the same time innovations are coming from the manufacturing process of such a family of materials, also including the possibility to manufacture them starting from metals powder for 3D printing. The Special Issue scope embraces interdisciplinary work covering physical metallurgy and processes, reporting about experimental and theoretical progress concerning microstructural evolution during processing, microstructure-properties relations, applications including automotive, energy and structural.

Yet the high price of stainless steel limits the application to construction projects. The lean duplex stainless steel (EN 1.4162) offers an opportunity for stainless steels to be used more widely due to its competitive in price, good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. The lean duplex stainless steel is a relatively new material, and research on this material is limited. Currently, the lean duplex stainless steel is not covered in any design specification, and no design rules are available for such material. Therefore, the behaviour and design of cold-formed lean duplex stainless steel members are investigated in this study. The investigation focused on columns, beams and beam-columns of square and rectangular hollow sections. Both experimental and numerical investigations were performed and reported. Design rules for cold-form lean duplex stainless steel members are proposed. The experimental investigation included material tests, column tests, beam tests and beam-column tests at room and elevated temperatures ranged from 24 - 900 C. The test specimens were cold-rolled from flat strips. The test program consists of two square hollow sections and four rectangular hollow sections. Coupon specimens were extracted from each hollow section, and their material properties were obtained from tensile coupon tests at room temperature and elevated temperatures. In this study, a modified design rule was proposed to predict the cold-formed lean duplex stainless steel material properties at elevated temperatures. The local and overall geometric imperfections were measured. A total of 38 column tests were conducted. The effective column length ranged from 75 to 1660 mm in order to obtain a column curve for each test series. The test program for beams included 10 pure bending tests, and the bending capacities of the specimens were determined. A total of 37 beam-column specimens were compressed between pinned ends at different eccentricities in order to obtain an interactive curve for each series of test. Numerical investigation on columns, beams and beam-columns at room temperature as well as elevated temperatures are also presented. Accurate finite element models were developed and verified against the experimental results for columns, beams and beam-columns at room temperature. The structural members at elevated temperatures were simulated by replacing the material properties with those obtained at elevated temperatures. Extensive parametric studies were carried out, including 150 columns, 126 beams and 150 beam-columns at room temperature, as well as 180 columns, 125 beams and 195 beam-columns at elevated temperatures. Column, beam and beam-column strengths obtained from the experimental and numerical investigations as well as available data were compared with the design strengths calculated using American, Australian/New Zealand, European specifications for stainless steel structures of duplex material, since lean duplex material is not covered by these specifications. In addition, direct strength method for carbon steel and stainless steel as well as continuous strength method for stainless steel were assessed for cold-formed lean duplex stainless steel. Modified design rules were proposed. The reliability of the current and modified design rules was evaluated

Book Stainless Steels and Alloys

Download or read book Stainless Steels and Alloys written by Zoia Duriagina and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2019-02-13 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials science is the magic that allows us to change the chemical composition and microstructure of material to regulate its corrosion-mechanical, technological, and functional properties. Five major classes of stainless steels are widely used: ferritic, austenitic, martensitic, duplex, and precipitation hardening. Austenitic stainless steels are extensively used for service down to as low as the temperature of liquid helium (-269oC). This is largely due to the lack of a clearly defined transition from ductile to brittle fracture in impact toughness testing. Steels with ferritic or martensitic structures show a sudden change from ductile (safe) to brittle (unsafe) fracture over a small temperature difference. Even the best of these steels shows this behavior at temperatures higher than -100oC and in many cases only just below zero. Various types of stainless steel are used across the whole temperature range from ambient to 1100oC. This book will be useful to scientists, engineers, masters, graduate students, and students. I hope readers will enjoy this book and that it will serve to create new materials with unique properties.

Book Stainless Steel in Structural Applications

Download or read book Stainless Steel in Structural Applications written by A. L. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stainless steel has been used in building construction for many years. Most applications have been for the non-structural purposes of appearance, durability, and ease of maintenance. In order to provide rational methods for the design of stainless-steel structural members, so that architectural applications could also fulfill a load-bearing function, American Iron and Steel Institute initiated a research project at Cornell University. The mechanical properties of wrought austenitic stainless steels are different from those of carbon and low-alloy steels. Cold working increases yield and ultimate strengths, decreases ductility, accentuates anisotropy, causes an increasing difference in stress-strain curves in longitudinal tension and compression, and may reduce moduli of elasticity--all to a greater degree than in structural carbon and low-alloy steels. The mechanical properties encountered in the annealed and the temper-rolled grades which are necessary for structural design are discussed. Emphasis is given to static, room-temperature response. Because most material specifications for stainless steel give only tensile properties, and do not recognize the anisotropic character of stainless steel, it is necessary to establish reliable design values for properties not normally specified. To demonstrate the significance of the mechanical properties of wrought austenitic stainless steels, an example is taken from the field of thinwalled structures. It is shown that rational structural design of cold-formed stainless-steel members is possible, provided the mechanical properties of stainless steel are known and are applied in the proper manner.

Book Duplex Stainless Steel in Storage Tanks DUPLEXTANK

Download or read book Duplex Stainless Steel in Storage Tanks DUPLEXTANK written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corrosion resistance of austenitic-ferritic (duplex) stainless steels (DSS) in atmosphere in presence of chloride deposits was studied in order to promote their safe application for construction of storage tanks and other facilities. Laboratory tests of pre-stressed specimens demonstrated clear superiority of DSSs over reference austenitic stainless steel (ASS) grades in terms of the resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC). SCC initiated at temperatures as low as 20 and 30 °C in ASS grades EN 1.4306 (304L) and EN 1.4404 (316L), respectively, whereas the only occurrence of SCC in duplex stainless steel samples was recorded at 70 °C. It was found that the initiation of SCC and selective/pitting corrosion is governed by the equilibrium chloride concentration in solution formed in contact of chloride surface deposits with air at given relative humidity. The propagation rate of selective corrosion of the ferritic phase in duplex stainless steel structures was maximal at the chloride concentration between 6 and 9 mol/L and it increased with the pH of the salt solution. Threshold levels of chloride concentrations and relative humidity in presence of specific deposits leading to localised corrosion were defined. Additional experiments and results of field exposures showed that deposits formed on real structures under washing conditions were benign in terms of the SCC initiation in view of both the surface chloride concentration and composition. If storage tanks are designed properly, DSSs are optimal materials for their construction due to superior corrosion resistance, mechanical properties and lower life cycle cost.

Book Stainless Steels for Design Engineers

Download or read book Stainless Steels for Design Engineers written by Michael F. McGuire and published by ASM International. This book was released on 2008 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rate of growth of stainless steel has outpaced that of other metals and alloys, and by 2010 may surpass aluminum as the second most widely used metal after carbon steel. The 2007 world production of stainless steel was approximately 30,000,000 tons and has nearly doubled in the last ten years. This growth is occurring at the same time that the production of stainless steel continues to become more consolidated. One result of this is a more widespread need to understand stainless steel with fewer resources to provide that information. The concurrent technical evolution in stainless steel and increasing volatility of raw material prices has made it more important for the engineers and designers who use stainless steel to make sound technical judgments about which stainless steels to use and how to use them.
