Book excerpt: Bestselling author Linda Lael Miller sweeps readers away—and through time itself—when a thoroughly modern woman encounters a dangerous, dashing eighteenth-century buccaneer. The result is a sensuous, joyous, utterly heartwarming tale of love. Phoebe Turlow needs to get out of Seattle and forget about the man she just divorced, her dwindling finances, and the lonely nights that stretch ahead of her. But she can’t foresee what awaits her on Paradise Island... Duncan Rourke is known to historians as “the pirate patriot.” He’s been dead for two centuries—or at least he’s supposed to be, until Phoebe Turlow steps out of a van, into a run-down island hotel, and into his world. Neither Phoebe nor her sexy pirate can envision the glorious adventure that is about to unfold. They understand only that they have found each other, and a grand passion, across the chasm of time...and they fear only the moment when the magic they have discovered may vanish. Passionate, emotional, and completely entrancing, Pirates will steal your heart.

Download or read book Pirate Gold written by Brian Lister and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty years ago, after a long delay, the government acted to close down the dozen or so pirate radio stations which had sprung up around the British coast. Many of the stories about those ships and offshore forts are well known, but this book asks intriguing questions about what was really going on behind the scenes. Offshore unlicensed radio stations were not a new idea, they had existed in different forms elsewhere for decades, so why did the phenomenon blossom in the UK when it did? It is common to conflate the rise of the UK pirate radio stations with the liberation struggles going on at the same time: civil rights protests, anti-war movements, student unrest and increasingly liberal attitudes to sex and sexuality. Fifty years on we can appreciate the reality: the people behind the early offshore stations were frequently motivated by very different political agendas and often the ships and forts were simply pawns in much bigger power games.

Book Citizens of the World

Download or read book Citizens of the World written by Samara Anne Cahill and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-14 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Citizens of the World investigates an area of eighteenth-century cultural, intellectual, and day-to-day life that many have seen but few have explored: adaptation. Throughout the long eighteenth century, adaptation happened repeatedly and in diverse forms: in the experience of travelers, merchants, and expatriates who made their way in foreign lands; in the adjustment of ancient literary norms to modern themes, concerns, and expectations; in the development of scientific apparatus for the probing of newly-discovered phenomena; in translating; in the adjusting of familiar architecture for new environments; in speculating about and making provision for the future reception of contemporary works; in the tempering and symphonizing of musical instruments; and in dozens of other no less important ways. The eight essays in this book, composed by scholars from Europe, Asia, and North America, provide the first panoramic view of adaptation during the Enlightenment. Essays delve into such diverse forms of adaptation as the representation of cultural interchange on porcelain serving pieces; the attempt to come to terms with the demands of air travel through the often cumbersome technology of ballooning; the relevance of the English Enlightenment to present-day Caribbean literature; piracy as a form of recalibration; Vietnamese verse; Georgic envisioning of ecological stability; and the uncanny interactions of French provincial architecture with both eighteenth-century dwellers and their descendants. Cumulatively, the essays illuminate the process by which eighteenth-century thinkers, artists, and adventurers elevated adaptation from a mere necessity to a stimulating, happily unending cultural project.
