Book excerpt: Through the eyes of the Chief Residents in Medicine and the Program Directors, the evolution of the Internal Medicine Training Program at Duke Medical Center is documented. The primary content of the book contains the perspectives provided by these individuals, which give a rich and informative picture of the dramatic changes that have occurred in the complexity of patient care and the training of physicians during the past 65 years. The key factor throughout this period has been an untiring effort to provide the best in patient care and to foster the development of outstanding young physicians. The Chief Medical Residents, an outstanding group of physicians and leaders, have been largely responsible for the fulfillment of these goals. In addition to the perspectives on the training program, the book contains a detailed biosketch on each individual. Finally, a brief overview of the collective achievements of the Chief Medical Residents is given. By any criteria, the Internal Medicine Training Program at Duke Medical Center is one of the top in the country. Although no one can predict the future with certainty, the dedication of the individuals involved, primarily the Chief Residents, will provide a firm foundation to continue an unwavering dedication to the best in patient care and will result in maintaining the high quality of the training program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During his fifteen years as chancellor, Dr. Ralph Snyderman helped create new paradigms for academic medicine while guiding the Duke University Medical Center through periods of great challenge and transformation. Under his leadership, the medical center became internationally known for its innovations in medicine, including the creation of the Duke University Health System—which became a model for integrated health care delivery—and the development of personalized health care based on a rational and compassionate model of care. In A Chancellor's Tale Snyderman reflects on his role in developing and instituting these changes. Beginning his faculty career at Duke in 1972, Snyderman made major contributions to inflammation research while leading the Division of Rheumatology and Immunology. When he became chancellor in 1989, he learned that Duke’s medical center required bold new capabilities to survive the advent of managed care and HMOs. The need to change spurred creativity, but it also generated strong resistance. Among his many achievements, Snyderman led ambitious institutional growth in research and clinical care, broadened clinical research and collaborations between academics and industry, and spurred the fields of integrative and personalized medicine. Snyderman describes how he immersed himself in all aspects of Duke’s medical enterprise as evidenced by his exercise in "following the sheet" from the patient's room to the laundry facilities and back, which allowed him to meet staff throughout the hospital. Upon discovering that temperatures in the laundry facilities were over 110 degrees he had air conditioning installed. He also implemented programs to help employees gain needed skills to advance. Snyderman discusses the necessity for strategic planning, fund-raising, and media relations and the relationship between the medical center and Duke University. He concludes with advice for current and future academic medical center administrators. The fascinating story of Snyderman's career shines a bright light on the importance of leadership, organization, planning, and innovation in a medical and academic environment while highlighting the systemic changes in academic medicine and American health care over the last half century. A Chancellor's Tale will be required reading for those interested in academic medicine, health care, administrative and leadership positions, and the history of Duke University.

While we are drawn to the clinical challenges of our patients, we are also drawn to the opportunities that our patients’ medical problems bring to science. This book contains the unique experiences and encounters that drew 20 accomplished physician-scientists to this profession. These personal stories are those of people and circumstances that have had profound effects on our career decisions, our creative opportunities, and our lives. These stories also serve to highlight the lessons learned along the way and the distinct attributes of these women and men of medicine and science. Our combined hope is that our collective biographies will enhance the public understanding of our profession, will move people from medicine to science and from science to medicine, and will inspire those who are contemplating this extraordinary profession. “It is a rare gift to benefit from the collective wisdom of so many individuals at the same time. These physician scientists have provided readers with helpful advice and thoughtful encouragement. The interesting and thought provoking essays in Medicine Science and Dreams can be read and digested one at a time or all at once in sequence. They provide lessons to be learned by any physician-scientist, whether just starting out or in the middle of a research career. Schwartz has done readers a great service and has added to the legacy of these prominent and successful physician-scientists.” Book review in JAMA, September 7, 2011—Vol 306, No. 9 by Derek S. Book The Doctor s Doctor

Download or read book The Doctor s Doctor written by John Laszlo and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book tells the story of a remarkable physician and teacher - a clear and practical thinker who changed the face of medical education in this country. Eugene A. Stead, Jr., taught young doctors how to meet the patient on the patient's terms, how to understand what the patient wanted and needed, and then how best to provide those services. He set standards of hard work and dedication that changed forever the careers of those who came within his orbit, and students emerged from exposure to this master teacher distinguished from their peers both in terms of personal satisfaction and in their knowledge of medicine." "Eugene A. Stead, Jr. rose from a poor Georgia family to become one of the most well-known and influential medical educators in the country. His tutelage produced more chairs of medicine departments than any other medical educator of the mid-20th century. He conceived the idea of an entirely new medical profession - the physician assistant - and saw his brainchild through to maturity. One of the results of his influence was the transformation of Duke University Medical Center from a small regional school into one of the top medical centers in the world. His ideas about education in general, about aging and chronic illness, about the roles of doctors, nurses, hospitals and nursing homes, though not always conventional and often in stark opposition to the status quo, are instructive not only for the medical community but for everyone who strives for excellence."--BOOK JACKET.
