At home, he's simply left alone--forgotten--to fend for himself. His father is long gone and barely a memory. His mother isn't abusive or cruel, yet she's more concerned with surviving her own life than being a mother to Nobody. In retribution, the Inuit's relatives demand a vendetta against the bear. Thus, Shammoo is driven out of his ancestral lands, and embarks on a giant iceberg in a desperate attempt to gain the shores of the fabled lucky iceberg, aka Australia, where he plans to begin a new life as a refugee. Unfortunately, a small but critical error in navigation lands him on the adjacent continental landmass of B'gandia, aka the lucky paddock. After passing the country's stringent immigration requirements, Shammoo makes the acquaintance of a succession of individuals that lead him to question whether the lucky paddock is indeed deserving of its cheerful sobriquet. This tale of innocence corrupted, of obsession and unnatural appetites, Shammoo of the North is a riveting drama, exploring rage, hope, destiny, and the deepest questions of moral truth, as well as issues of vital importance to the environment. Book excerpt: Finalist in the "Best Books 2010" Awards "This is one of those books that you read and then have to sit back or curl up in a ball and 'be still and know.' In these honest, tear-stained pages are clear signs that there is a 'Hound of Heaven' hunting us down—this Spirit that is stalking us with love, winking at us with miracles, tickling us with grace, subverting everything that could destroy us, and whispering in our ears that we are truly beloved." —Shane Claiborne Author, activist, recovering sinner Love God, but not so sure about church? If you've ever had doubts or felt the gnawing need to examine your interior life, you'll find a trustworthy companion in Enuma Okoro, a purse-shopping, tea-sipping, shaky follower of Jesus who wouldn't mind meeting a guy who loves God and has decent hair. But after her father's unexpected death, her grief seems to morph into the panicky feeling that God wants something more from her, like maybe becoming a nun. As she seeks to unravel those feelings, Okoro takes us back to the places that formed her, from her first years in church at a parish in Queens, New York, to her years in West Africa where she collected crucifixes along with Richie Rich comic books, to her studies in Europe and the United States. Part Augustine, part Jane Austen with a side of Anne Lamott, Okoro attempts to reconcile her theological understanding of God's call to community with her painful and disappointing experiences of community in churches where she often felt invisible, pigeonholed, or out of place. At turns snarky and luminous, laugh-out-loud funny and vulnerably poignant, Reluctant Pilgrim is the no-holds-barred account of a woman who prays to savor God's goodness and never be satisfied. It is a daring, insightful, and deeply moving field guide for the curious, the confused, and the convicted.

Book The Legend of Guy of Warwick

Download or read book The Legend of Guy of Warwick written by Velma Bourgeois Richmond and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-18 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1996. This lavishly illustrated study is a comprehensive literary and social history which offers a record of changing genres, manuscript/book production, and cultural, political, and religious emphases by examining one of the most long lived popular legends in England. Guy of Warwick became part of history when he was named in chronicles and heraldic rolls. The power of the Earls of Warwick, especially Richard de Beauchamp, inspired the spread of the legend, but Guy's highest fame came in the Renaissance as one of the Nine Worthies. Widely praised in texts and allusions, Guy's feats were sung in ballads and celebrated on the stage in England and France. The first Anglo-Norman romance of Gui de Warewic, a Saxon hero of the tenth century was written in the early 13th century; the latest retellings of the legend are contemporary. Examples of Guy's legend can be found in two English translations that survived the Middle Ages, a new French prose romance, a didactic tale in the Gesta Romanorum, and late medieval versions in Celtic, German, and Catalan, as well as English. Guy remained a favorite Edwardian children's story and was featured in the Warwick Pageant, an historical extravaganza of 1906. The patriotism of World War II sparked a resurgence of interest that produced several new versions, mostly folkloric.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One thing Rachel Hardison knew for sure was that she did not want to find herself twice divorced at age twenty nine as was her older sister Devon, who was in the midst of ending her second marriage, so since all every man ever wanted in her experience was just one thing and she had no intention of satisfying their boody calls, at age twenty four, she had contented herself with being single. And while she would love to find a man who would be able to look past her face and her body and love her for herself the way she would want to love him, Rachel simply did not see that happening. So when she arrived in Alaska for her older brother Georges wedding to his boss, Stacey, an Alaska native, the last thing Rachel arrived looking for was a man. Instead, what was on her mind was sightseeing and plenty of it, and with George having lived in Anchorage for five years now, he would know every nook and cranny to take her to. Only problem she discovered once having arrived at the fancy Anchorage hotel owned by his fiance was that George was too busy putting last-minute touches on Saturdays wedding as well as handling last-minute hotel business in preparation for his and Staceys honeymoon to show her around. And with Alaska being the habitat of bears and other such wildlife and wilderness trappings that could prove dangerous to a visitor untaught in its ways, George offered to get one of his groomsmen to stand in as a tour guide for her. It is on that note that he asks her to guess whos standing in as his best man, and when she asks him who and he tells her Felix Latham, Rachel cant believe it! Felix Latham--his gorgeous best friend from college, who fell head-over-heels in love with their sister Devon, who dated him briefly before dumping him to the wayside and forgetting him completely! That said, Rachel had not heard his name in ten years, surprised George had kept in touch with him after all that time. And indeed George had--to hear him tell it, Felix was presently an actor on a New York soap opera, had been for six years, and had the Emmys to prove it. Rachel simply couldnt believe that Felix was that successful, much less a famous actor! George then suggests that Felix would make an excellent tour guide for her, and when Rachel naturally asks why when hes not a native any more than is she, George tells her that hes been at the hotel for over a week now, having upset half his female staff getting them to show him around while theyre off-duty. Rachel doesnt doubt that for a minute, always having thought of Felix as a lady killer, with the exception of being unable to keep Devon wrapped around his finger. Small wonder hed become an actor, she thought! And so she agrees to let Felix be her tour guide provided hes up to it--just as she anticipates the reaction shes going to get when he sees how Georges kid sister filled out since the last time he saw her, not to mention she wasnt exactly a dog, either! And indeed again, when George finally does reintroduce his old friend to the kid sister he hasnt seen in ten years, Felix cant believe it any more than he can keep his eyes off her. In fact, despite the fact that he is still clearly in love with Devon, the disappointment he feels at learning from Rachel that Devon is in the midst of a divorce and thus wont be there to attend the wedding is almost eclipsed by his excitement at the thought of showing her all the fabulous places in and around Anchorage that he has been avidly exploring the length of his stay thus far, knowing shell provide a most pleasant and familiar distraction. And so he agrees to be her tour guide for the next three days and they have so much fun, not to mention, so much in common, that Rachel is bent on keeping it from happening despite Felixs equal determination that it does. But just as the inevitable happens and they are about to give in to their attraction, whats going to happ

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the editor-in-chief and managing editor of the Babylon Bee! A millenial seeker travels through a twenty-first century take on The Pilgrims's Progress with allegorical versions of all our modern vices tempting him along the way—as well as a few timeless personified virtues that just might see him through. Biting satire and uncommon wisdom from the creators of the internet's most influential comedy site, and an author of national bestsellerThe Babylon Bee Guide to Wokeness! Ryan Fleming is a young agnostic reeling from his brother’s death. Though he is deeply angry with God, he makes good on a promise he made to his brother in the final moments of his life: to visit a church at least once. But shortly after his arrival, the slick megachurch’s shoddily installed video projector falls on his head—sending Ryan through a wormhole into another world. After a narrow escape from the City of Destruction, where the comfortably numb townspeople are oblivious to the fire and brimstone falling like bombs in their midst and destroying their homes, Ryan finds himself on a quest: To make it back to his own universe, he must partner with a woman named Faith to awaken a long-sleeping King—the World-Maker who can make all things new. Replete with characters ripped straight from the twenty-first century American church—including Radical, Mr. Satan, the Smiling Preacher, and others—this sometimes-humorous, always-insightful trek parallels Christian’s fictional journey in Pilgrim’s Progress. Prepare to laugh, cry, cringe, feel convicted, and ultimately be changed by the time the story ends. The Postmodern Pilgrim’s Progress is brought to you by Kyle Mann and Joel Berry, the two comedic minds behind The Babylon Bee—which, with 250,000 newsletter subscribers and more than fifteen million page views per month, is the most popular satirical news site on the planet.
