Download or read book The Book of Laman written by Mette Ivie Harrison and published by . This book was released on 2017-09 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mette Harrison is one of the best-known Mormon authors currently writing about Mormonism for a national audience. Her Linda Wallheim mystery series (The Bishop's Wife, His Right Hand, For Time and All Eternities, and, one hopes, many more to come) marks the first time ever that a strong and intelligent Mormon woman (or any other kind of Mormon woman for that matter) has had a starring role in a nationally marketed mystery series. In The Book of Laman, Harrison takes a concept that others have used for a quick joke-the idea of narrating the first part of the Book of Mormon from Laman's perspective-and turns it into a serious and profoundly moving story of redemption that has the ability to make us all better readers, and, more importantly, better people. From the Forward The central conceit of The Book of Laman-telling the story of 1 Nephi from Laman's perspective-seems like a perfect device for a funny book. Indeed, Bob Lewis used it precisely this way in his satirical 1997 novel, The Lost Plates of Laman. Here we see all of the jokes implied the first time we hear that Laman is the narrating the Book of Mormon: the villain becomes the hero, and the hero becomes an insufferable know-it-all, the archaic language is peppered with anachronisms and modern values, and the devotional content of the original text is sacrificed on the twin altars of mocking Mormon weirdness and having a grand time. But Mette Harrison's Book of Laman is not funny. It does not try to be funny. It doesn't use intentional archaisms to make fun of the Book of Mormon's language; rather, it tells its story in a non-distracting modern style. The characters are not simply reversed. Nephi is sometimes an annoying brat, but he is also a real prophet who sees and speaks for the Lord. Laman is neither a comic book villain nor a long-suffering ironist. He is a flawed human being struggling to live well and usually coming up short. And in some of the book's very best scenes, he is touched unexpectedly by grace and God. Harrison's characters are the sorts of people who might actually have existed in history. She does not naturalize the miracles in the Book of Mormon-there really are angels and visions and smiting and all the rest-but she humanizes the actors. And this is important, as it corrects for a reading bias that plagues Latter-day Saints. Simply put: we want the Book of Mormon to be history, not fiction, but we expect the people in it to act like characters in a (not very good) novel and not as the kinds of people who have actually ever existed.

Download or read book The Blueprint written by Kirk Franklin and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2010-05-18 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seven-time Grammy award winning artist offers an inspiring blend of God and grit for building a fulfilling life "The Blueprint is a transparent approach to talking about issues-from marriage to politics to sex and religion-and it's from my perspective. Not from a Princeton, mainline, protestant, evangelical or liberal viewpoint, but from a 2010 Christian moderate with swag." --Kirk Franklin Gospel artist Kirk Franklin's faith wasn't always as strong as it is today. His father abandoned his family; his mother constantly told Kirk that he was an unwanted child and left him to be adopted when he was four; his sister became a crack addict; he never saw a black man who was faithful in marriage. Despite his shaky foundation he found strength and success through his music and through God. In The Blueprint, Franklin will explain how by communicating with life's architect, God, he learned to see hardships as necessary life propellants and moved on to become the bestselling gospel musician in recent history, as well as a devoted husband and loving father. This is not a step program, it's a lifelong journey. With Franklin's guidance, you will: -pursue your dreams without losing yourself in the chase -do some lifescaping to eliminate the "weeds" that hold you back -declare your life to be drama-free -get past your fears, so you can live and love fully -pass the baton to future generations by leading by example It's time to take faith out of the church pews and into our everyday lives. With hope, devotion, and strength, The Blueprint offers a plan to help you move beyond hardships to create your own personal Blueprint for life. Watch a Video

Download or read book The Imaginary Lives of Mechanical Men written by Randy F. Nelson and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2012-10-15 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mechanical men in these stories—Industrial Age holdovers, outsiders wanting for relevance and respect, or overwhelmed people who confuse the certainties of one reality with the doubts of another—are cut off in some way from contemporary culture. Sometimes in these stories, which Randy F. Nelson calls "thought experiments about values in conflict," the characters are like the Native American prison guard in "Escape": Rifkin thinks that atonement is possible even for fugitive killers. Others are less sanguine. In "Breakers," a corporate hitman arrives on a forgettable island off the African coast. His mission: to shut down a hellish, polluting, ship-demolition business. His nemesis: a lawyer, now gone Heart-of-Darkness crazy, who preceded him years earlier for the same purpose. The bottom drops out in other stories, rearranging all reference points to good and bad, true and false. In "Abduction," for instance, a distraught young woman summons a tabloid reporter to a grubby hotel room, where the now-lifeless alien who had invaded her body lies wrapped in a sheet. Nelson once explained his motivations by alluding to a line in a Gabriel García Márquez story. A crowd of villagers are gazing upon a man, "but even though they were looking at him, there was no room for him in their imagination." "Stories and characters and situations that ask the imagination to accommodate something bigger, further, deeper—that's what I'm after," said Nelson.

Download or read book The Beginning of a Beginning written by Michael S. Pendergast III and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002-07-17 with total page 661 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It would seem an odd way to approach the saga of creation. But history is alive and so is our unlikely hero, John O'Connell. A junior executive seeking his roots in Northern Ireland, Jack finds that even a good deed can be deadly. Now merely deceased, Jack learns the hard way that death isn't the end. Thus begins the tale of an average man, murdered only to awaken between heaven and earth. Aided by an old sage, first mistaken for a madman, Jack finds roots he never imagined and the terrors of being caught-up in the war between Good and Evil. Narrating the sage, Jack's mentor enlists everyone who can help, from warrior angels and cherubs, to ex-slaves, atomic scientists, and even a resurrected Atlantean. Yet everytime Jack tries to grasp this new 'life', another twist throws him for a loop. How can a mortal (especially a dead one) cope with natural mysteries, while living in an unnaturally mysterious place where telepathy and teleportation are normal, and even thoughts can become real? That's Jack's challenge, if he's up to it and if he's willing to pay the price, which is terrifyingly high indeed.
