Book excerpt: As part of the current context of requiring ever more efficient grades of steels in terms of resistance to stress and to damage, the Dual-Phase steels (DP) present an acceptable strength/ductility compromise. It is nevertheless necessary to have a better understanding of the mechanisms leading to the fracture of such steels. Damage mechanisms were studied in this PhD using X-ray tomography. In-situ tensile tests were carried out on several grades of DP steel, a ferritic steel and a martensitic steel in order to characterize each step of ductile damage. Qualitative observations and quantitative data on the nucleation of damage, the void growth and the coalescence of cavities were collected during these tests. This quantitative data was then used for the development and/or the validation of damage models. A prediction of the kinetic of nucleation was proposed and the Huang's correction of the void growth model of Rice and Tracey accounting for the triaxiality was experimentally validated. For the first time, the step of void coalescence leading to fracture of materials was quantitatively characterized in an industrial material and coalescence criteria were locally applied on couples of neighboring cavities present in the studied specimen. The use of analytical models enabled a better understanding of the properties influencing the studied damage phenomena. The effect of the kinematic part of the strain hardening on void nucleation and void growth was notably emphasized and validated by performing complex loading tests.

Book excerpt: Damage evolution in ductile metals is characterized by the nucleation, growth and coalescence of small internal voids. Many laws and studies have been developed to understand and predict damage. In the past decade, X-ray tomography has been shown to be an adapted tool for characterizing damage. Due to its 3D imaging and most importantly non-destructive capabilities, it brings the possibility to not only obtain more accurate qualitative data, but also for quantitative analysis of damage. In this study, in-situ characterisation using synchrotron X-ray tomography were performed on a huge number of pure metals of different crystal structure (HCP, FCC, BCC) to see the effect of crystal structure on ductile damage. Studies on damage evolution are usually based on a statistical mean-field approach. An automatic tracking algorithm was further developed as a complementary way of analysis, which follows the voids individually. This allows us to separate the 3 damage mechanisms and study the nucleation, growth and coalescence of voids in more detail. The data obtained were analysed using both the classical statistical approach and with the tracking algorithm. Experiments were also performed on different geometry samples to see the influence of triaxiality on ductile damage.

Furthermore, due to the biocompatibility of Mg, some alloys with controlled corrosion rates are used as degradable implant materials in the medical sector. The typical processing route of Mg parts incorporates a casting step and, subsequently, a thermo–mechanical treatment. In order to achieve the desired macroscopic properties and thus fulfill the service requirements, thorough knowledge of the relationship between the microstructure, the processing steps, and the resulting property profile is necessary. This Special Issue covers in situ and ex situ experimental and computational investigations of the behavior under thermo–mechanical load of Mg-based alloys utilizing modern characterization and simulation techniques. The papers cover investigations on the effect of rare earth additions on the mechanical properties of different Mg alloys, including the effect of long-period stacking-ordered (LPSO) structures, and the experimental and computational investigation of the effect of different processing routes.

Book excerpt: Quantitative relationships among processing parameters, microstructure, and material properties are of considerable interest in the context of development of robust processing routes that optimize the required material properties. As a result, the scientific literature contains a large number of experimental and theoretical studies on microstructure-properties relationships. Fracture sensitive mechanical properties such as ductility, ultimate tensile strength, fatigue life, and fracture toughness depend on the average microstructural parameters as well as the distributions of microstructural parameters and their extrema. Development of quantitative relationships between such material properties and microstructural distributions and extrema has received considerably less attention, particularly in the wrought metals and alloys. Accordingly, an important objective of this research is to perform a systematic investigation in this direction. The dependence of the fracture-sensitive mechanical properties on the microstructural distributions and extrema often leads to substantial variability in these properties: a set of specimens having the same average chemistry, the same average processing history, and the same average microstructural parameters such as volume fractions of different constituents can exhibit substantially different material properties. The present research (i) is concerned with high strength (~ 1000 MPa) high martensite (>50%) dual phase steel where the martensite is a topologically continuous phase (matrix) containing a dispersion of islands of ferrite, and (ii) focuses on understanding the microstructural origins of the variability in fracture sensitive mechanical properties, in particular variability in the room temperature uniaxial tensile ductility. The research involves quantitative microstructure characterization using stereology and digital image processing and quantitative fractography using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and fracture profilometry. The analysis of the quantitative fractographic and microstructural data obtained in this research leads to useful guidelines for reducing the variability in the tensile ductility of the dual phase steel under investigation.
