Hopkins describes the poverty, soup kitchens, food riots, street beggars and workhouses that were all a feature of Dublin life. He also introduces us to the weird, wonderful, and often downright strange customs and pastimes of Dubliners stretching back to the Middle Ages, such as the 'bearing of balls' annual parade by the city's bachelors and the ritual humiliation of would-be bridegrooms at the bullring.

Book Raymond Queneau s Dubliners

    Book Details:
  • Author : James Patrick Gosling
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing
  • Release : 2019-09-12
  • ISBN : 1527539903
  • Pages : 241 pages

Download or read book Raymond Queneau s Dubliners written by James Patrick Gosling and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-09-12 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a broad-ranging exploration of two comic erotic and well-nigh feminist novels written by Raymond Queneau, On est toujours trop bon avec les femmes (1947) and Journal intime (1950). Both are set in Ireland, were initially published by Éditions du Scorpion under the pseudonym Sally Mara, and then later published together by Gallimard as Les Œuvres completes de Sally Mara (1962). The book examines Queneau’s life when he wrote these texts, the pervasive Joycean influences, his surreal version of the 1916 Dublin Uprising versus the real event, his remarkably accurate Dublin city and his use of the Irish language. The seven core chapters are explorations of prominent aspects of these works, and most involve the solution of puzzles by means of investigations of contexts, contemporary events, and a wide variety of sources. In conclusion, the book makes a convincing case for the literary and entertainment value of Les Œuvres completes de Sally Mara as a long-planned and subtly integrated work.

Book Backgrounds for Joyce s Dubliners

Download or read book Backgrounds for Joyce s Dubliners written by Donald T. Torchiana and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1986. Dubliners was James Joyce’s first major publication. Setting it at the turn of the century, Joyce claims to hold up a ‘nicely polished looking-glass’ to the native Irishman. In Backgrounds for Joyce’s Dubliners, the author examines the national, mythic, religious and legendary details, which Joyce builds up to capture a many-sided performance and timelessness in Irish life. Acknowledging the serious work done on Dubliners as a whole, in this study Professor Torchiana draws upon a wide range of published and unpublished sources to provide a scholarly and satisfying framework for Joyce’s world of the ‘inept and the lower middle class’. He combines an understanding of Joyce’s subtleties with a long-standing personal knowledge of Dublin. This title will make fascinating reading for scholars and students of Joyce’s writing as well as for those interested in early twentieth century Irish social history.
