Book Dry Beans and Pulses

Download or read book Dry Beans and Pulses written by Muhammad Siddiq and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-08-29 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The common beans and pulses are diverse food resources of high nutritional value (protein, energy, fiber and vitamins and minerals) with broad social acceptance. These legume crops demonstrate global adaptability, genotypic and phenotypic diversity, and multiple means of preparation and dietary use. Beans and pulses are produced in regions as diverse as Latin America, Africa, Asia, and North America, and on a scale similar to some other crops, such as wheat, corn, rice and soybeans. Numerous factors influence utilization, including bean type and cultivar selection, cropping environment and systems, storage conditions and handling infrastructure, processing and final product preparation. Nutrient content and bio-availability are dramatically influenced by these conditions. In recent years, beans and pulses have been cited for imparting specific positive health potentiating responses, such as hypocholesteremic response, mitigation of diabetes and colonic cancer, and weight control. Enhanced dry bean utilization focused on improved dietary health is an opportunity within both subsistent and developed populations. This book provides a contemporary source of information that brings together current knowledge and practices in the value chain of beans/pulses production, processing, and nutrition. It provides in-depth coverage of a wide variety of pertinent topics including: breeding, postharvest technologies, composition, processing technologies, food safety, quality, nutrition, and significance in human health. An experienced team of over 25 contributors from North America, Asia, and Africa has written 15 chapters, divided into three sections: Overview, production and postharvest technologies of beans and pulses Composition, value-added processing and quality Culinology, nutrition, and significance in human health Contributors come from a field of diverse disciplines, including crop sciences, food science and technology, food biochemistry, food engineering, nutritional sciences, and culinology. Dry Beans and Pulses Production, Processing and Nutrition is an essential resource for scientists, processors and nutritionists, whatever the work setting.

Download or read book Characterization of High Yielding Dry Bean Phaseolus Vulgaris L Cultivars by Simplified Growth Analysis written by Alonso Bravo-Martinez and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study has been intended to contribute to the identification of characteristics and factors that determine the yielding capacity of dry bean plants. The major objective is to gather information to describe a high yielding genotype that can be bred to make a highly efficient utilization of production resources. Concepts of plant physiology, plant architecture, and agronomic practices have been combined to develop certain hypotheses and evaluate them.

Book Nutritional and Evolutionary Implications of Phaseolin Seed Protein Variability in Common Bean Phaseolus Vulgaris L

Download or read book Nutritional and Evolutionary Implications of Phaseolin Seed Protein Variability in Common Bean Phaseolus Vulgaris L written by Paul L. Gepts and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between available methionine concentration and quantitative phaseolin variation was studied in the progenies of crosses involving several genotypes with different levels of phaseolin and/or available methionine, among which were a P. coccineus subsp. coccineus line ("Mexican Red Runner") without detectable phaseolin and a Mexican wild bean accession (PI325690-3) with reduced phaseolin levels. In all the progenies studied, with the exception of those in population 6, higher phaseolin levels led to increased available methionine concentrations, indicating that phaseolin is a major source of available methionine in common bean seeds. In population 6 ("Sanilac"x 15R148), no association was observed between phaseolin and available methionine concentrations, possobly because of the influence of other factors such as additional methionine-rich proteins or seedcoat tannins. Qualitative phaseolin variation among wild and cultived common beans was analyzed using one-dimensional sodium-dodecyl-sulphate polycrylamine gel electrophoresis (SDS/PAGE) and two-dimensional isoeletric focusing SDS/page. Wild beans exhibited a wid variety of phaseolin patterns; "B", "CH", "M", "S", and "T". Landrace cultivars showed the "C", "S", and "T" types described previously, as well as three new patterns: "A", "B", and "H". Cultivars with "B" and "S" phaseolin types generally had smaller seeds than "A", "C", "H", and "T" phaseolin cultivars. The geographic distribuition patterns of the different phaseolin types allowed us.....

Download or read book Grain Legumes written by Antonio M. De Ron and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to grain legumes and include eight chapters devoted to the breeding of specific grain legume crops and five general chapters dealing with important topics which are common to most of the species in focus. Soybean is not included in the book as it is commonly considered an oil crop more than a grain legume and is included in the Oil Crops Volume of the Handbook of Plant Breeding.Legume species belong to the Fabaceae family and are characterized by their fruit, usually called pod. Several species of this family were domesticated by humans, such as soybean, common bean, faba bean, pea, chickpea, lentil, peanut, or cowpea. Some of these species are of great relevance as human and animal food. Food legumes are consumed either by their immature pod or their dry seeds, which have a high protein content. Globally, grain legumes are the most relevant source of plant protein, especially in many countries of Africa and Latin America, but there are some constraints in their production, such as a poor adaptation, pest and diseases and unstable yield. Current research trends in Legumes are focused on new methodologies involving genetic and omic studies, as well as new approaches to the genetic improvement of these species, including the relationships with their symbiotic rhizobia.

Book Diversity of Common Bean Phaseolus Vulgaris L Landraces and the Nutritional Value of Their Grains

Download or read book Diversity of Common Bean Phaseolus Vulgaris L Landraces and the Nutritional Value of Their Grains written by José Luis Chávez-Servia and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grain legumes are considered major sources of dietary proteins, calories, certain minerals and vitamins, and they are the most widely cultivated and consumed crops worldwide. Among them are the common beans, whose major production volumes came from landraces cultivated in traditional farming systems. The objective of this study was to evaluate the phenotypic diversity of a set of common bean landraces from Mexico based on the agromorphological traits and nutritional composition of the grain in the context of traditional farming systems. Different field and laboratory data were collected and complemented with secondary information published in refereed journals and research reports. The results showed that there are significant differences in the morphological and physiological traits of the plant, pod and grain among groups of common bean landraces of different geographic origins, which were associated with different indigenous groups. Similar patterns were observed in the contents of anthocyanins, polyphenols, flavoinds and minerals as well as antioxidant activity. In the evaluated population groups in each region, there are outstanding populations in terms of agromorphological traits and the nutritional value of the grain that can enable a participatory breeding initiative guided by regional objectives. Some populations from Sierra Norte, Oaxaca, presented higher values in Zn and Fe, and populations from Estado de Mexico exhibited high polyphenol and flavonoid values but stable agronomic behaviour.
