Book excerpt: "Hydraulic Structures are subject to varying loads of cyclic character. These loads are primarily generated by differential water heads but also by waves, drive system forces and other actions. These loads may cause fatigue damage to the steel components. As a result, the designers must take account of an additional failure mode of these structures - the failure caused by fatigue. Prior to the 1970s, fatigue was of minor or no concern for designers, constructors and managers of hydraulic structures. Several serious fatigue damages, particularly to lock gates emphasised the need for guidelines in this field. Such guidelines already exist for other steel structures, such as bridges, cranes or pressure vessels, offshore structures and airplanes. These guidelines do not, however, address all specific operation conditions and demands that apply to hydraulic structures. This report aims to offer comprehensive guidelines in the field of fatigue to all professionals involved in design, construction and management of hydraulic steel structures."--Introduction

Book Safe Operation and Maintenance of Dry Dock Facilities

Download or read book Safe Operation and Maintenance of Dry Dock Facilities written by Paul A. Harren and published by Amer Society of Civil Engineers. This book was released on 2010 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Safe Operation and Maintenance of Dry Dock Facilities is the first manual of practice to provide guidance for the operation of four main types of dry dock facilities: floating dry docks, graving docks, marine railways, and vertical lifts. Until now, some of these facilities have been operated and maintained without a thorough understanding of the design of their dry dock, and therefore the features that are vital to the safe operation of the facility. This manual is intended for commercial entities that operate one of the four dry docks discussed in this book. It will provide a cost-effective program for maintaining and operating a safe dry dock facility. This book examines in depth the four activities necessary to achieving this which include: condition assessment, maintenance, control inspection, and dock operations.
