  • Pages : 359 pages

Download or read book Dog s Best Friend written by Simon Garfield and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2020-11-17 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A fascinating, informative and highly entertaining expedition through the highways and byways of dogdom.” —John Bradshaw, New York Times bestselling author of Dog Sense A charming meditation on the relationship between humans and dogs, drawing upon history, science, art, and personal experience to illuminate a magical bond that has endured millennia—from the New York Times bestselling author of Just My Type. “Ludo is now an elderly gentleman, and we would do almost anything to ensure his continued happiness. We schedule our days around his needs—his mealtimes, his walks, the delivery of his life-saving medication (he has epilepsy, poor love). We spend a bizarrely large amount of our disposable income on him, and he never sends a card of thanks. When he’s not with us for a few days, the house feels extraordinarily empty. I feel so fortunate to know him.” Ludo is a dog—Simon Garfield’s beloved black Labrador retriever, one of millions of canines who have become integral parts of our lives. But how did the dog become top dog? How did these faithful animals come to assist us not only in hunting, but in bomb disposal and cancer detection—and ultimately become our closest companions? Dog’s Best Friend examines how this bond developed over the centuries, and how it has transformed countless lives, both human and canine. Garfield begins with the earliest visual representations—dogs depicted in ancient rock art—and ends at the laboratory that first sequenced the canine genome. Along the way, we meet the legendary Corgis of Buckingham Palace, the dogs of the Soviet space program, the world’s first labradoodle, and a border collie that can identify more than a thousand different plush toys. Garfield reveals the secrets of the world’s best dog trainers, takes us inside the wild world of dog breeding and dog shows, and unearths the deep psychological roots of the human-dog link. And Ludo pops his snout in from time to time as well. A celebration of this deep interspecies connection, delivered with Simon Garfield’s inimitable wit, Dog’s Best Friend offers delights and insights for anyone who has ever loved a dog.

Book s ibn Al s Book on the Useful Properties of Animal Parts

Download or read book s ibn Al s Book on the Useful Properties of Animal Parts written by Lucia Raggetti and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ‘Science of properties’ represents a large and fascinating part of Arabic technical literature. The book of ʿĪsā ibn ʿAlī (9th cent.) ‘On the useful properties of animal parts’ was the first of such compositions in Arabic. His author was a Syriac physician, disciple of Ḥunayn ibn Isḥāq, who worked at the Abbasid court during the floruit of the translation movement. For the composition of his book, as a multilingual scholar, he collected many different antique and late antique sources. The structure of the text itself—a collection of recipes that favoured a fluid transmission—becomes here the key to a new formal analysis that oriented the editorial solutions as well. The ‘Book on the useful properties of animal parts’ is a new tile that the Arabic tradition offers to the larger mosaic representing the transfer of technical knowledge in pre-modern times. This text is an important passage in that process of acquisition and original elaboration of knowledge that characterized the early Abbasid period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “It’s been an honour and privilege to have looked after so many dogs and been introduced to their owners. The warm feeling of pleasure when a dog greets us or pulls their owner inside the house is priceless. At times I’ve felt like I should be paying the owners because of the joy and interest their pets give us.” When Graham Matthews began walking Nero, a trainee guide dog, he had no idea how life-changing this seemingly simple job would be. Once Nero passed on to his advanced training, the hole he left behind in Graham’s life was immense, and so Graham became a dog carer, offering a home from home to a wide range of canines – from rumbustious rescue dogs to languid labradors. “When Nero left for his advance training, I was so upset that I never took on another guide dog. When you’ve been up all night with the dog throwing up at both ends, cleaning up and lying on the floor, saying, Daddy wishes he could do it for you, well that’s not a dog, but a family member. Nero’s legacy lasted long after he had gone and it was an experience I wouldn’t have missed for the world.” It all Started with a Dog is a simple tale of dog walking experiences which are both funny and sad. Aimed at all dog lovers, it conveys the love and affection that passes between man and dog and shows that a dog really is a man’s best friend.
