Book Drugs and Driving

Download or read book Drugs and Driving written by Herbert Moskowitz and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drugs and Driving is a compendium of papers from a symposium of the same title presented at the U.S. Transportation Research Board. This collection reviews the effects of five classes of drugs on driving (amphetamines, tranquilizers, barbiturates, narcotics, cannabis), the other studies being made on drugs and driving, as well as some countermeasure programs against drunk driving. The papers report that amphetamines can induce risky driving behavior, tranquilizers can increase traffic accident risks, barbiturates can degrade driving skills especially when the drug is combined with alcohol, while marijuana use can impair important driving skills. Another paper evaluates drug use and driving risk among high school students in Toronto: results show that the total effect of infrequent use of drugs on accidents is small compared to alcohol use. A study of out-patients in Finland notes that the combined used of alcohol and drugs tend to increase accident frequency. One paper refutes that Alcohol Safety Action Programs in the United States are ineffective. This collection can be helpful for sociologist, psychologists, psychiatrists, traffic safety officers, and heads of urban safety and traffic divisions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adverse drug reactions and interactions are still a major headache for healthcare professionals around the world. The US Food and Drug Administration's database recorded almost 300,000 serious adverse events in 2009 alone, of which 45,000 instances proved fatal. This updated new edition of the indispensable guide to drug interactions incorporates fresh research completed since the book's original publication by Humana Press in 2004. Additions include a new section on pharmacogenomics, a rapidly growing field that explores the genetic basis for the variability of responses to drugs. This new material reviews important polymorphisms in drug metabolizing enzymes and applies the findings to forensic interpretation, using case studies involving opiates as exemplars. Existing chapters from the first edition have in most cases been updated and reworked to reflect new data or incorporate better tables and diagrams, as well as to include recent drugs and formulations. Recent references have been inserted too. The handbook features extra material on illicit drug use, with a new chapter tackling the subject that covers cocaine, amphetamines and cannabis, among others. The section on the central nervous system also deals with a number of drugs that are abused illicitly, such as benzodiazepines, opiates flunitrazepam and GHB, while so-called 'social' drugs such as alcohol and nicotine are still discussed in the book's section on environmental and social pharmacology. Focusing as before on detailed explanation and incorporating both pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic drug interactions, this book will continue to be a lodestar for health and forensic professionals as well as students.

Book The Use and Misuse of Sleeping Pills

Download or read book The Use and Misuse of Sleeping Pills written by Wallace B. Mendelson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hypnos (the Greek god of sleep) and Thanatos (death) were the twin sons of Nyx, the goddess of night (Fox, 1964). Hypnos lived in a dusky valley in the land of the Cimerians, watered by Lethe, the river of forgetfulness. He brought sleep to both men and gods, and sometimes sent his sons Morpheus, Icelus, and Phantasus to appear in dreams. At the door of his abode grew poppies and other herbs which induce sleep (Hamilton, 1961). This book deals with these herbs and their subsequent imitations. Before launching into an examination of hypnotics, it might be well to comment briefly on the manner in which this was written, and to acknowledge the help of a number of individuals. My intention was that this be useful not only for the physician or scientist, but also for the student. Thus each chapter contains an introductory section which pro vides background material. Chapter 3, for instance, describes the general principles of drug absorption, distribution, and metabolism before dis cussing the pharmacologic properties of each hypnotic. In addition, each chapter concludes with a section which summarizes the main issues.

Download or read book Drug Addiction I written by and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 767 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses the general problem of drug addiction from several points of view, which are in some ways quite unique and different from other areas of pharmacology. Drug addiction is closely associated with criminal behavior. One of the great and noble edifices of civilization is the philosophic and ethical view that man is perfectible, and some believe that this can be achieved by providing the appropriate circumstance or environment in which man can mature and be educated. Some have postulated that drug abuse is a consequence of an inadequate or pathologic set of socializing experiences or is a consequence of basic conflicts between the values and accepted patterns of behavior of a subculture and that of a larger culture. The degree to which man is malleable and perfectible by social forces is not known nor do we know the true desirability of socializing individuals to the extent that their behavior does not deviate from social norms. Some deviancy is essential for innovation and creativity, and at times there may be difficulties in determining whether an innovator or creator is exhibiting sociopathic behavior or not. This aspect of drug addiction is inherently a matter of social values and ethics.
