Book excerpt: The first book reached for by most forensic toxicologists practicing in the postmortem drug testing arena is Baselt's Disposition of Toxic Drugs and Chemicals in Man, currently in its fourth edition. Baselt has, with this new volume, provided those toxicologists practicing in the impaired driving arena with a similarly valuable resource. Covering most of the commonly prescribed, centrally acting drugs, and a wide range of illicit drugs, the book contains 140 monographs. The format will be familiar to users of Baselt's original work. Each section succinctly reviews the pharmacology of each drug, considering publications of clinical trial data, recommended doses and associated plasma concentrations of both the parent and metabolites, when they are known, the drug's metabolism, and the warnings contained in the Physicians Desk Reference for the drug with respect to its potential effects on driving, or psychomotor skills. This is followed by a review of laboratory studies, which have included assessment of psychomotor effects from the use of the drug. Review of these studies is made more intelligible by the inclusion of a glossary of technical terms. Further sections are included on driving studies (where they exist) and epidemiology. Finally, Baselt summarizes all the material in terms of whether, and in what circumstances, there is evidence of psychomotor impairment. He is careful, however, to stress when these conclusions are based on specific driving studies and when they are inferred from more primary effects.

Book The Interaction Between Alcohol and Marijuana

Download or read book The Interaction Between Alcohol and Marijuana written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study to examine the dose dependency of the effets of alcohol and marijuana alone and in combination on a battery of tests of human psychomotor performance and mood is reported. Four dosage conditions for each drug were employed and all of the possible combinations of these dosage conditions examined. Both drugs produced significant dose dependent effects on performance measures, intoxication ratings on some of the mood scales. Both quantitative and qualitative differences between the two drugs were apparent. By far the major drug effects on the tests were those of alcohol. The effects of the two drugs when taken together were essentially additive, although evidence indicated that lowest dose of marijuana produced a degree of antagonism of the effects of alcohol. Alcohol. Marijuana. Cannabis. Drug abuse. Mood. Road safety. Performance evaluation. Skills.

Book Drugs Addiction and the Brain

Download or read book Drugs Addiction and the Brain written by George F. Koob and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-07-12 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drugs, Addiction, and the Brain explores the molecular, cellular, and neurocircuitry systems in the brain that are responsible for drug addiction. Common neurobiological elements are emphasized that provide novel insights into how the brain mediates the acute rewarding effects of drugs of abuse and how it changes during the transition from initial drug use to compulsive drug use and addiction. The book provides a detailed overview of the pathophysiology of the disease. The information provided will be useful for neuroscientists in the field of addiction, drug abuse treatment providers, and undergraduate and postgraduate students who are interested in learning the diverse effects of drugs of abuse on the brain. - Full-color circuitry diagrams of brain regions implicated in each stage of the addiction cycle - Actual data figures from original sources illustrating key concepts and findings - Introduction to basic neuropharmacology terms and concepts - Introduction to numerous animal models used to study diverse aspects of drug use. - Thorough review of extant work on the neurobiology of addiction

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The medical use of marijuana is surrounded by a cloud of social, political, and religious controversy, which obscures the facts that should be considered in the debate. This book summarizes what we know about marijuana from evidence-based medicineâ€"the harm it may do and the relief it may bring to patients. The book helps the reader understand not only what science has to say about medical marijuana but also the logic behind the scientific conclusions. Marijuana and Medicine addresses the science base and the therapeutic effects of marijuana use for medical conditions such as glaucoma and multiple sclerosis. It covers marijuana's mechanism of action, acute and chronic effects on health and behavior, potential adverse effects, efficacy of different delivery systems, analysis of the data about marijuana as a gateway drug, and the prospects for developing cannabinoid drugs. The book evaluates how well marijuana meets accepted standards for medicine and considers the conclusions of other blue-ribbon panels. Full of useful facts, this volume will be important to anyone interested in informed debate about the medical use of marijuana: advocates and opponents as well as policymakers, regulators, and health care providers.
