Book Famine and Pestilence in the Late Roman and Early Byzantine Empire

Download or read book Famine and Pestilence in the Late Roman and Early Byzantine Empire written by Dionysios Ch. Stathakopoulos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Famine and Pestilence in the Late Roman and Early Byzantine Empire presents the first analytical account in English of the history of subsistence crises and epidemic diseases in Late Antiquity. Based on a catalogue of all such events in the East Roman/Byzantine empire between 284 and 750, it gives an authoritative analysis of the causes, effects and internal mechanisms of these crises and incorporates modern medical and physiological data on epidemics and famines. Its interest is both in the history of medicine and the history of Late Antiquity, especially its social and demographic aspects. Stathakopoulos develops models of crises that apply not only to the society of the late Roman and early Byzantine world, but also to early modern and even contemporary societies in Africa or Asia. This study is therefore both a work of reference for information on particular events (e.g. the 6th-century Justinianic plague) and a comprehensive analysis of subsistence crises and epidemics as agents of historical causation. As such it makes an important contribution to the ongoing debate on Late Antiquity, bringing a fresh perspective to comment on the characteristic features that shaped this period and differentiate it from Antiquity and the Middle Ages.

Book Disease Scarcity and Famine

Download or read book Disease Scarcity and Famine written by Ludwig Lavater and published by Reformation Heritage Books. This book was released on 2021-07-31 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outbreaks of disease and famine are nothing new, nor is the responsibility of Christian leaders to respond to such societal devastation. Disease, Scarcity, and Famine assembles sermons from Ludwig Lavater, a leading pastor in Zurich during the sixteenth century, that deal with this subject matter. Lavater explains where plagues ultimately come from, gives reasons God chastises the good as well as the bad with them, and instructs readers on how they should conduct themselves during such outbreaks. He also recounts the divine promises in which God offers help to His elect during trying times. Lavater provides a response to disease both grounded in Scripture and satisfying to the soul. Table of Contents: Foreword - Jonathan Master First Sermon on Scarcity and Famine Second Sermon on Scarcity and Famine Third Sermon on Scarcity and Famine

Book Christians and Muslims Responses to the COVID 19 Pandemic in Nigeria

Download or read book Christians and Muslims Responses to the COVID 19 Pandemic in Nigeria written by Afis A. Oladosu and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-06-24 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays attempts to speak to the past, as it does the future. It engages the dialectics in Christians and Muslims’ responses to the COVID-19 pandemic from theological, philosophical, sociological and gender perspectives. The interdisciplinary approach became a necessity based on the realization that beyond the high fatalities that resulted from the pandemic, people’s responses to it were as eclectic as were their existential realities. This volume is particularly unique because it yields space to Christianity and Islam and presents the trajectories in their practitioners’ response to the pandemic. The authors historicize, theorize and theologize these responses and present exemplar templates of coping mechanisms for religious institutions and people faced with unconventional situations bordering on religious ideals. The book is a valuable resource for scholars, religious leaders, historians, health practitioners and faith-based organizations on strategies to adopt for future pandemics.

Book A History of Disease in Ancient Times

Download or read book A History of Disease in Ancient Times written by Philip Norrie and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-25 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how bubonic plague and smallpox helped end the Hittite Empire, the Bronze Age in the Near East and later the Carthaginian Empire. The book will examine all the possible infectious diseases present in ancient times and show that life was a daily struggle for survival either avoiding or fighting against these infectious disease epidemics. The book will argue that infectious disease epidemics are a critical link in the chain of causation for the demise of most civilizations in the ancient world and that ancient historians should no longer ignore them, as is currently the case.

Book He Will Save You from the Deadly Pestilence

Download or read book He Will Save You from the Deadly Pestilence written by Philip Jenkins and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Jews and Christians alike have made Psalm 91 one of the most commonly used and cited parts of the Bible. The psalm has shaped theories of politics and government, not to mention influencing medicine and mysticism. In different ages, the psalm has borne many different names: the Song of Evil Spirits, the Soldier's Psalm, and most concisely, the Protection Psalm. As the Song of Plagues, it has gained a whole new relevance in an age of global pandemic. In the New Testament, Satan himself quotes the psalm, and ever since, that text has both reflected and shaped changing concepts of evil and the demonic. It was and still is used for magical and superstitious purposes, including for exorcism and demon-fighting. As perils and threats have changed and evolved in various societies, so interpretations of Psalm 91 have developed to accommodate each new reality. A biography of Psalm 91 is also a history of critical themes in Western religion"--
