Book Drops and Bubbles in Interfacial Research

Download or read book Drops and Bubbles in Interfacial Research written by D. Mobius and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1997-12-09 with total page 729 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shape of drops and bubbles is the centre of interest for many interfacial scientists. This book describes the most recent accomplishments to make use of drops and bubbles in fundamental research and application. After a general introduction into the mechanics of liquid menisci, chapters are dedicated to methods based on drops or bubbles. The chapters about the three main drop experiments provide the theoretical basis, a description of experimental set-ups, specific advantages and disadvantages, correction and calibration problems, experimental examples and their interpretation: pendent and sessile drop, drop volume, and spinning drop technique. The chapter about capillary pressure methods summarises different techniques and gives examples of applications, for instance measurements under microgravity. The maximum bubble pressure technique as a particular capillary pressure method is described, with emphasis on the most recent developments which made this technique applicable to extremely short adsorption times, down to the range of milliseconds and less. Problems connected with aerodynamics and hydrodynamics are discussed and used to show the limits of this widely used standard method. The oscillating bubble technique provides information not available by other techniques, for example about the dilational rheology of adsorption layers and relaxation processes at the interface. The description of rising bubbles in surfactant solutions will contain the hydrodynamic basis as well as the theoretical description of the effect of interfacial layers on the movement of bubbles. Besides the theoretical basis experimental data, such as water purification, flotation processes etc. and the relevance for practical applications will be presented. The chapter about lung alveols demonstrates how important bubbles built by biological membranes are in everyday life. The relevance for medicine and biology as well as model studies is discussed. An important example for the application of drops is metallurgy, where the surface tension of metals and alloys is an important parameter for many applications. The chapters on drop shape analysis by using fibre technique and on force measurements between emulsion droplets are of much practical relevance. Lists of references and symbols are given separately at the end of each chapter while a common subject index is given at the end of the book.

Book Drops and Bubbles in Contact with Solid Surfaces

Download or read book Drops and Bubbles in Contact with Solid Surfaces written by Michele Ferrari and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-10-17 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third volume in a series dedicated to colloids and interfaces, Drops and Bubbles in Contact with Solid Surfaces presents an up-to-date overview of the fundamentals and applications of drops and bubbles and their interaction with solid surfaces. The chapters cover the theoretical and experimental aspects of wetting and wettability, liquid–solid interfacial properties, and spreading dynamics on different surfaces, including a special section on polymers. The book examines issues related to interpretation of contact angle from nano to macro systems. Expert contributors discuss interesting peculiarities, such as the phenomena of super-spreading and super-hydrophobicity. They discuss specific solid surfaces—for example, reactions and wetting of liquid metals at high temperatures—and the interaction between nano-bubbles at solid surface and nano-particles at liquid interfaces. The book also includes a chapter on electro-wetting. Given the range of topics covered in this volume, the state-of-art content is useful to readers looking for an introductory overview as well as those looking for in-depth exploration of material related to the interaction of fluids with solid surfaces. It is a valuable contribution to the field of characterization of solid surfaces and can be used as a working tool or to stimulate further study for researchers and students.

Book Dynamics of Bubbles Drops and Rigid Particles

Download or read book Dynamics of Bubbles Drops and Rigid Particles written by Z. Zapryanov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. Objective and Scope Bubbles, drops and rigid particles occur everywhere in life, from valuable industrial operations like gas-liquid contracting, fluidized beds and extraction to such vital natural processes as fermentation, evaporation, and sedimentation. As we become increasingly aware of their fundamental role in industrial and biological systems, we are driven to know more about these fascinating particles. It is no surprise, therefore, that their practical and theoretical implications have aroused great interest among the scientific community and have inspired a growing number of studies and publications. Over the past ten years advances in the field of small Reynolds numbers flows and their technological and biological applications have given rise to several definitive monographs and textbooks in the area. In addition, the past three decades have witnessed enormous progress in describing quantitatively the behaviour of these particles. However, to the best of our knowledge, there are still no available books that reflect such achievements in the areas of bubble and drop deformation, hydrodynamic interactions of deformable fluid particles at low and moderate Reynolds numbers and hydrodynamic interactions of particles in oscillatory flows. Indeed, only one more book is dedicated entirely to the behaviour of bubbles, drops and rigid particles ["Bubbles, Drops and Particles" by Clift et al. (1978)] and the authors state its limitations clearly in the preface: "We treat only phenomena in which particle-particle interactions are of negligible importance. Hence, direct application of the book is limited to single-particle systems of dilute suspensions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains lecture notes and invited contributions presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute and EPS Liquid State Conference on PHYSICOCHEMICAL HYDRODYNAMICS-PCH: INTERFACIAL PHENOMENA that were held July 1-15, 1986, in LA RABIDA (Huelva) SPAIN. Although we are aware of the difficulty in organizing the contents due to the broad and multidisciplinary aspects of PCH-Interfacial Phenomena, we have tried to accomodate papers by topics and have not followed the order in the presentation at the meetings. There is also no distinction between the ASI notes and Conference papers. We have done our best to offer a coverage as complete as possible of the field. However, we had difficulties coming from the fact that some authors were so busy that either did not find time to submit their contribution or did not have time to write a comprehensive paper. We also had to cope with very late arrivals, postdeadline valuable contributions that we felt had to be included here. Our gratitude goes to the NATO Scientific Affairs Division for its economic support and to the EPS Liquid State Committee for its sponsorship. Financial support also came from Asociacion Industrias Quimicas-Huelva (Spain), Caycit-Ministerio De Educacion Y Ciencia (Spain), Canon-Espana (Spain), Citibank-Espana (Spain), CNLS-Los Alamos Nat. Book Fundamental Studies on Dynamics of Bubbles and Drops Under the Combined Effect of Buoyancy and Thermocapillary

Download or read book Fundamental Studies on Dynamics of Bubbles and Drops Under the Combined Effect of Buoyancy and Thermocapillary written by Ananta Rama Vongole Kaushik and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bubbles and drops are ubiquitous and are of fundamental importance in various industrial and natural processes. The interaction of bubbles and drops with themselves and the background fluid have major impact on the overall behavior of the flow. Hence the need arises to understand their behavior and to manage them in an efficient way. For almost all conventional applications, the gravitational force is predominantly used to control and manipulate their motion. In the cases where the gravitational force becomes weak, particle control by thermocapillary is a promising alternative. Thus, the thermocapillary which relies on manipulation of bubbles and drops caused by the variation of surface tension with temperature is being studied in many physical, chemical, and engineering disciplines. Some of the prominent applications are reduced gravity materials processing, microelectromechanical devices, microfluidics, mixing enhancement in microdrops and transfer of fluid by thermocapillary. Since in reality the force of gravity is inevitable and not entirely absent the main goal here is to understand the behavior of bubbles/drops under the combined effect of gravity and thermocapillary. To this end, the transient behavior of a drop and a collection of them at low Reynolds number and finite Reynolds number was explored. The study of dynamics of isolated bubbles contributes to the understanding of microstructural response of several industrial applications used in the manipulation of particles. Hence, the multi-bubble interactions were analyzed and their pattern formation was studied. Manipulation of tiny amounts of fluids in the form of drops is a central task in many lab-on-chip applications. This necessitates a fundamental understanding of the behavior of compound drops under thermocapillary conditions. Therefore, preliminary studies were done to decipher the dynamics of compound drops. Direct numerical simulations were used to conduct the study.

Book Transport Phenomena with Drops and Bubbles

Download or read book Transport Phenomena with Drops and Bubbles written by Satwindar S. Sadhal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid flows that transfer heat and mass often involve drops and bubbles, particularly if there are changes of phase in the fluid in the formation or condensation of steam, for example. Such flows pose problems for the chemical and mechanical engineer significantly different from those posed by single-phase flows. This book reviews the current state of the field and will serve as a reference for researchers, engineers, teachers, and students concerned with transport phenomena. It begins with a review of the basics of fluid flow and a discussion of the shapes and sizes of fluid particles and the factors that determine these. The discussion then turns to flows at low Reynolds numbers, including effects due to phase changes or to large radial inertia. Flows at intermediate and high Reynolds numbers are treated from a numerical perspective, with reference to experimental results. The next chapter considers the effects of solid walls on fluid particles, treating both the statics and dynamics of the particle-wall interaction and the effects of phase changes at a solid wall. This is followed by a discussion of the formation and breakup of drops and bubbles, both with and without phase changes. The last two chapters discuss compound drops and bubbles, primarily in three-phase systems, and special topics, such as transport in an electric field.
