Although not all apocalypticism is violent, in its extreme forms radical apocalypticism gives rise to terrorists as varied as members of Al Qaeda, Anders Behring Breivik, or Timothy McVeigh. In its secular variations, it also motivates ideological terrorists, such as the eco-terrorists Earth Liberation Front or The Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski. This book provides an original paradigm for distinguishing between peaceful and violent or radical forms of apocalypticism and analyses the history, major transformations, and characteristics of the apocalyptic thought system. Using an inter-disciplinary and cross-cultural approach, this book discusses the mechanisms of radicalization and dynamics of perceived oppression and violence to clarify anew the self-identities, motivations, and goals of a broad swath of terrorists. Award-winning translator and poet Andrew Frisardi channels the vigor and nuance of Dante’s first masterpiece for a modern audience. The “little book,” as Dante calls it, consists of thirty-one lyric poems—mostly sonnets—embedded in a prose narrative, which both recounts an apparently autobiographical set of events also evoked in the poems and offers analysis of the poems’ construction in the medieval critical tradition of divisio textus, or division of the text. Dante selected poetry he had written before age twenty-eight or so and wrote the prose to shape it into a story. The poems anthologize Dante’s growth as a poet, from the influence of his earliest mentors to the stylistic and thematic breakthroughs of his poetic coming-of-age. Upon breaking the law he was sent to jail and moved to a psychiatric facility to receive help. His therapy was geared to help a hostile and aggressive person. His mental state was one of chemically induced hallucinations and some psychotic fantasy. The imposed force of treatment was going to help him to deal with his aggression. Through therapy thee was hope in guiding the path to a more healthy and productive future. The boy was diagnosed with poor impulse controls. He was character sketched to be a heinous criminal. The preconceived notions were imposed that he was to have the characteristics of a person with aggressive tendencies. All hypothetical situations were leveraged to believe he would act violently. Predetermined behavioral states left him to be treated for a condition of possessing underlying hostilities. He was not to be trusted. Given many chance the boy showed that he could be a model patient. He showed he was able to comply with the rules. His learning about system showed where he was able to manipulate the system for personal gain. He had evolved and progressed in his criminal mentality to repeat his acts of aggression. The recidivism of a hardened criminal was surfacing in light of a potential healing process that was evolving.
