Book excerpt: Who can ever get enough of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice? Who doesn't dream of strolling through stately shrubberies? Of reveling in Regency lore-where luxury is silken, manners are refined, and the language reflects exquisite sensitivities and a decorum whose bonds we have managed to escape, yet we still find charmingly quaint? Dreaming Pemberley is a mini-saga composed of four "dreams" that carry the Bennets, Darcys, Collins, and their friends forward in their lives through two generations. Their journeys are fraught with painful detours and misunderstandings, and they are forced to grapple with character flaws as well as dastardly acquaintances. At one point, a member of the Collins household is deemed a witch! In the fourth dream, the famed equanimity of Pemberley is threatened by a disruptive cat. However, felicity and redemption are persistent threads, and we rejoice when Anne de Bourgh's personhood is allowed to blossom, even though Lady Catherine de Bourgh feels strongly abused. Mystery and surprise are found at various twists and turns. Georgiana's fate is beyond belief. And the late Mrs. Darcy's long-locked tea room engenders a renown that spreads as far as London-much to Mr. Darcy's chagrin. Over all, the gracious gentility that pervades Pemberley is a force for good and does much to soothe hearts and hurts.

Book excerpt: From the author of Mr. Darcy’s Daughters, the delightful escapades of the Darcy family continue with an enchanting story set at Pride and Prejudice’s Pemberley. When Phoebe, a young niece of Pride and Prejudice’s Mr. Darcy, is shattered by an unhappy romance, she retreats to Pemberley and is joined by kindhearted Louisa Bingley, unmarried after three London seasons. Once the young ladies are situated in the house, several handsome strangers also arrive—all hopeful of winning the girls’ hearts. As preparations for the ball which Mr. and Mrs. Darcy are to give at Pemberley gain momentum, mischief and love triangles abound, making life as difficult as possible for anyone connected with the Darcy family. Populated with authentic characters firmly rooted in Jane Austen’s mores and stylistic traditions, Mr. Darcy’s Dream has an unforgettable combination of romance, societal scandals, friendship, family, and marriage.

Book Laughter War and Feminism

Download or read book Laughter War and Feminism written by Gabriela Castellanos and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1994 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the critical tradition, Jane Austen has long been considered a conservative writer, whose novels emphasize the importance of manners and propriety. This study, however, continues a more recent trend in Austen Scholarship, one that focuses on her feminism. It breaks new ground by identifying, as one ingredient in her fiction, an iconoclastic laughter that is closer to popular gaiety than to the elitist ironic stance of many of her predecessors. Furthermore, it underlines the presence of conflict in her narrative and points to the disruptive speech reported in Austen's elegant, hyper-correct sentences. Working with three of Austen's novels - Northanger Abbey, Pride and Prejudice and Emma - the study analyzes the elements of feminist carnival in her prose.

Book excerpt: In Awe, Scoff Heim's second novel, follows the lives of three outcasts who, during the course of one rain-soaked autumn, find themselves the target of an onslaught of terror and violence. Sarah, thirty-two, is a clerk in a convenience store with a string of part-time boyfriends; Harriet is a frail, birdlike woman of sixty-two whose son, Marshall - Sarah's best friend - has recently died; and Boris is a seventeen-year-old orphan who lives in the local detention center and dreams of writing the ultimate zombie novel. This unlikely trio is united by their love for one another, their freakishness in relation to their conservative Kansas backwater, and their rich fantasy lives. Harriet immerses herself in the serenity of her farm as she grapples with the reality of her son's death, while Sarah dreams of being a heroine in the B horror films she loves. And Boris dreams of Rex, the beautiful but savage redneck who is the center of a lethal pack of teenage boys. But these fantasy lives increasingly blur into the real, potentially dangerous world around them. Sarah's car is defaced with graffiti; two local coeds turn up raped and murdered near the river; someone is prowling in the bushes outside Harriet's and Sarah's houses; Boris is beaten and humiliated at school. How these three friends respond to the terror both within and around them forms the core of Scott Heim's riveting story and leads the novel to its brutal and startling conclusion.

Book Jane Austen and Mary Shelley and Their Sisters

Download or read book Jane Austen and Mary Shelley and Their Sisters written by Laura Dabundo and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jane Austen and Mary Shelley and Their Sisters is an unprecedented work that provides an in-depth analysis of the work of women novelists from the Romantic age, a period that has long been exclusively designated as the province of canonized male poets. Although there are many volumes on the works of Austen and Shelley, this collection is the first to consider these writers and others in the wider context of English fiction by women during the 1780s to 1830s. Collectively, the authors examine the works of nearly fifteen women novelists of the Romantic period whose works encompass the prevailing social and political realities of the time. They demonstrate that women writers were not following a specific formula to produce their creative works but were instead responding to an insatiable market for their imaginative and infinitely varied wares. A must-read for scholars of women's studies as well as 19th century British literature, Jane Austen and Mary Shelley and Their Sisters is sure to be an important resource for years to come.

Book excerpt: Here too, it contends, our picture must be revised: Freud himself was perhaps right in thinking that the lasting significance of his work could well be not in therapy but as a tool for interpreting human culture." "The idea that Sigmund Freud might illuminate Jane Austen's work may be a startling one; but it should interest both students of English literature and readers who carry a conception of Freud in their intellectual baggage without having thought out its implications for a cult figure very near home."--BOOK JACKET.
