Book Drawings from New York Collections

Download or read book Drawings from New York Collections written by Bean and published by . This book was released on 2013-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exhibition is the second in a comprehensive series inaugurated in November 1965, which illustrates the art of drawing through the resources of public and private collections located in New York City and its suburbs. Organized jointly by The Pierpont Morgan Library and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the exhibitions alternate between the two institutions, the first, of the Italian Renaissance, having been shown at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the second which took place at the Morgan Library. Each exhibition is commemorated in a catalogue, in which every drawing is fully described and illustrated. This series was a cooperative venture in which the Metropolitan's late director, James J. Rorimer, took particular pleasure, participating actively in its planning, reading with a close critical eye the printer's proof of the first catalogue, and presiding at the inaugural exhibition. We shall carry on the projected series, but with a deep sense of loss. Italian painting of the seventeenth century aroused little enthusiasm among Americans in the first half of the twentieth century. It is all the more gratifying that we have been able to assemble so representative a selection of drawings of the period from within our immediate area. To be sure, we have been fortunate as before in being able to borrow from collectors who began their buying as Europeans, but it is also evident that recently in this country museums and their patrons increasingly appreciate seventeenth-century Italian drawings and paintings. This book was originally published in 1967 and has gone out of print. This edition is a print-on-demand version of the original book.]

Book Drawings from New York Collections

Download or read book Drawings from New York Collections written by Jacob Bean and published by . This book was released on 2013-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third in a series of catalogues published jointly by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Pierpont Morgan Library to record exhibitions of drawings from the two institutions and from distinguished private collections. The exhibitions and the books that illustrate them document the finest traditions of European draftsmanship, from the Renaissance through the nineteenth century. The Eighteenth Century in Italy, which follows The Italian Renaissance and The Seventeenth Century in Italy, contains reproductions of 300 drawings, presented one to a page. The book brings together, chronologically, brilliant works by G. B. Tiepolo, Canaletto, Francesco Guardi, Giovanni Battista Piranesi, and Domenico Tiepolo--as well as drawings of fifty-one other masters of the Settecento. As in the preceding catalogues, the photographic reproductions have been made directly from the drawings themselves in order to retain, as much as possible, the original tonalities. Each of the 300 drawings has a commentary, record of provenance and exhibitions, technical description, and bibliography. And, for the first time in the series, many watermarks have been drawn and reproduced photographically. This book was originally published in 1971 and has gone out of print. This edition is a print-on-demand version of the original book.]

Book 17th Century Italian Drawings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Download or read book 17th Century Italian Drawings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art written by Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, N.Y.) and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 1979 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume describes and reproduces 379 drawings by Italian artists of the seventeenth century in The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The most brilliant draughtsmen of this period--Annibale Carracci, G.B. Castiglione, Pietro da Cortona, Guercino, Carlo Maratti, and Salvator Rosa--are well represented in the Museum's collection, and the book offers a survey of Italian baroque draughtsmanship. It includes innovative work by Carracci, as well as drawings by such late baroque masters as Sebastiano Ricci and Francesco Solimena. Four hundred five illustrations are contained in this inventory. Entries for the drawings provide essential bibliographical references, provenance, and a discussion of the purpose of the drawing when known. -- Inside jacket flap.

Book Italian Fifteenth to Seventeenth century Drawings

Download or read book Italian Fifteenth to Seventeenth century Drawings written by Anna Forlani Tempesti and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 1991 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps more than any other collector of his generation in the United States, Robert Lehman was interested in acquiring early drawings. He made a great effort to add drawings to the collection of paintings, sculpture, ceramics, glass, and other objects that his father, Philip Lehman, had begun assembling. The 116 Italian drawings analyzed and discussed in this volume are among the more than 2,000 works of art from the collection now housed in the Robert Lehman Wing of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Robert Lehman's collection demonstrates the variety of drawings produced in Italy from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century, a period when the purposes and techniques of drawings, as well as the aims and abilities of the artist who made them, became increasingly sophisticated. The volume includes an elaborate design for an equestrian monument by Antonio Pollaiuolo, a magnificent study of a bear by Leonardo da Vinci, a cartoon by Luca Signorelli, a study for a vault fresco by Taddeo Zuccaro, and many other drawings that are among the best Italian examples to have survived from that era. Most types of drawings, in a wide variety of techniques, are represented—figure studies, grand compositions, landscapes, cartoons, modelli, and even sculptors' studies. -- Metropolitan Museum of Art website.

Book Drawings from New York Collections

Download or read book Drawings from New York Collections written by Jacob Bean and published by . This book was released on 2013-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The exhibition described and fully illustrated in this catalogue is the first in an extended series that will display the resources of collections of master drawings located in New York City and its environs. While the holdings of public institutions are reasonably well known, the drawings in private collections are generally less so, and we therefore hope to perform a service for both the interested public and art scholarship in our projected series of exhibitions and catalogues, which will encompass the drawings of Western European artists from the Italian Renaissance to the end of the nineteenth century. The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Pierpont Morgan Library possess the two major collections of drawings in the United States, and both are continuing to grow by purchases, gifts, and bequests. Because both institutions are fortunate enough to be in this position, and because both owe an incalculable debt to the vision, the standards of excellence, and the generosity of J. Pierpont Morgan and his son, J. P. Morgan, it has seemed wholly appropriate that they should join forces in presenting these exhibitions to the public. They will alternate between the two institutions, this first exhibition being held at the Metropolitan, and the second in the series, also of Italian drawings, at the Morgan Library during the winter of 1966-1967. New York is a relative newcomer among the world's centers of master drawings collections, and even today the breadth of the city's resources owes much to the continuing activity and the discerning eye of collectors whose initial enthusiasm was nourished abroad. This catalogue and its successors demonstrate what progress has been made in assembling here representative examples of the work of the leading draftsmen of the past five centuries. This book was originally published in 1965 and has gone out of print. This edition is a print-on-demand version of the original book.]

Book The Antonio II Badile Album of Drawings The Origins of Collecting Drawings in Early Modern Northern Italy

Download or read book The Antonio II Badile Album of Drawings The Origins of Collecting Drawings in Early Modern Northern Italy written by Evelyn Karet and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evelyn Karet's in-depth study of the Antonio II Badile Album - the earliest known example of an art collection pasted onto the pages of a book - is both focused and broad in its appeal to those interested in the early modern era. The provenance of the album is traced from its assemblage to the seventeenth-century collection of Conte Lodovico Moscardo to its dismantling by the dealer Francis Matthiesen in the 1950s, establishing that the volume conserved in the Frits Lugt Collection is not an original but a replica produced by Matthiesen. Although Antonio II must be celebrated as the collector of the drawings, new paleographic analysis has identified the actual compiler of the album after Antonio?s death providing a terminus post quem in the late 1530s or early 1540s. Karet enlarges the focus from the album itself to the historic tradition of collecting drawings in northern Italy in the early modern era before Vasari, for which the album provides a new point of reference. Throughout the book, Karet discusses the Badile family, examines the individual drawings in the book, investigates the contacts between artists and humanists, their rich, diverse collections and the humanist mind-set that fostered the appreciation of drawings. She explores notable early drawing collections in northern Italy and the role of northern Italy as a center of collection in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The book concludes with two appendices: a reconstruction of the original album, including a discussion of the reconstruction process, suggestions about what the album originally looked like, and a page-by-page guide to its contents; and a detailed analysis of Francis Matthiesen's career. This book opens up new areas of inquiry into an overlooked subject.

Download or read book Publications of the Metropolitan Museum of Art 1964 2005 written by Metropolitan Museum of Art and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2012-10-09 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume, Publications of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1964-2005, is a successor to a volume published by the Museum in 1965 entitled Publications of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1870-1964. These two bibliographic volumes endeavor to list all the known books, pamphlets, and serial publications bearing the Museum's imprint, and issued by the institution during the first 135 years of its existence (through June 2005). The first volume was compiled by Albert TenEyck Gardner, at the time an Associate Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture, and the present volume has been compiled from the Annual Reports issued by the Museum during the relevant years. Together the two volumes testify to the tremendous contributions made to knowledge by the curators and conservators of the Metropolitan and by the many other experts who have contributed to the Museum's exhibition catalogues. Various issues of the Bulletin emphasize the great sweep of the Museum's acquisitions during these years, and the exhibition catalogues--a number of them Alfred H. Barr Jr., Award or the George Wittenborn Award--testify to the continuity of the institution's dedicated program to enrich people's lives through knowledge of art. (This title was originally published in 2006.)

Book Painting and Illumination in Early Renaissance Florence 1300 1450

This book was released on 1994 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . By way of introduction to the objects themselves are three essays. The first, by Laurence B. Kanter, presents an overview of Florentine illumination between 1300 and 1450 and thumbnail sketches of the artists featured in this volume. The second essay, by Barbara Drake Boehm, focuses on the types of books illuminators helped to create. As most of them were liturgical, her contribution limns for the modern reader the medieval religious ceremonies in which the manuscripts were utilized. Carl Brandon Strehlke here publishes important new material about Fra Angelico's early years and patrons - the result of the author's recent archival research in Florence.

Download or read book European Drawings 4 written by Nicholas Turner and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2001-01-03 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection of drawings at the Getty Museum was started in 1981 with the purchase of Rembrandt’s Nude Woman with a Snake and has steadily expanded since then, so that now, at the turn of the new millennium, it stands at more than six hundred drawings and is, sheet for sheet, one of the best anywhere. The Getty goal is to create from the finest examples a collection of the different Western European schools of drawing before 1900, with special emphasis on the work of the most important and accomplished draftsmen. The collection now contains superb examples of the work of Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, Dürer, Rembrandt, Claude Lorraine, Watteau, Gainsborough, David, Millet, Manet, Van Gogh, and Degas. This is the fourth in the series of catalogues describing the drawings in the Getty Museum. Most of the drawings discussed in the present volume were chosen for the collection in the period of 1994 to 1998 and include examples from the Italian, German, Dutch and Flemish, French, Spanish, and British schools. Also included are several gifts from private collectors, which mark the start of a tradition that, it is hoped, will continue in the future. The catalogue entries for these new acquisitions are organized first by national school and then by artist. The book also includes a bibliography and indexes of artists, former owners, related drawings, prints, and works in other media.
