Book A Landscape for Modern Sculpture

Download or read book A Landscape for Modern Sculpture written by John Beardsley and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monumental sculpture of the postwar years has generally achieved, at best, an uneasy truce with its surroundings, too often crowned into urban settings that compete with, rather than complement, its scale and visual power. But at Storm King Art Center - a 200-acre country estate transformed into a sculpture park - sculpture and landscape are brought together in the most deliberate manner and to the dramatic enhancement of both. The collection features works by master sculptors such as Alexander Calder, Mark di Suvero, Louise Nevelson, Isamu Noguchi, and David Smith, as well as by many younger artists. Several pieces have been commissioned for specific sites at Storm King, while the others have been sensitively installed throughout the park's striking terrain. This handsome volume captures the many pleasures of a visit to one of the world's finest outdoor collections of twentieth-century sculpture. Using multiple views and details, as well as spectacular aerial shots, photographer David Finn reveals a great deal about these works that casual viewers might otherwise miss. The thoroughly engaging text by John Beardsley conveys the distinctive spirit of Storm King and provides an enlightening look at the development of both the collection and the landscape over the past twenty-five years.

Book Thinking the Sculpture Garden

Download or read book Thinking the Sculpture Garden written by Penny Florence and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative book poses two, deceptively simple, questions: what is a sculpture garden, and what happens when you give equal weight to the main elements of landscape, planting and artwork? Its wide-ranging frame of reference, including the USA, Europe and Japan, is brought into focus through Tremenheere Sculpture Garden, Cornwall, with which the book begins and ends. Effectively less than 15 years old, and largely the work of one man, Tremenheere affords an opportunity to examine as work-in-progress the creation of a new kind of sculpture garden. Including a historical overview, the book traverses multiple ways of seeing and experiencing sculpture gardens, culminating in an exploration of their relevance as 'cultural ecology' in the context of globalisation, urbanisation and climate change. The thinking here is non-dualist and broadly aligned with New Materialisms and Material Feminisms to explore our place as humans in the non-human world on which we depend. Eminent contributors, including John Dixon Hunt, George Descombes, Bernard Lassus and David Leatherbarrow, approach these issues through practices and theories of landscape architecture; garden and art making; history and writing; and philosophy. Richly illustrated with over 100 images, including a colour plate section, the book will primarily appeal to those engaged in professional or academic research, along with sculpture garden visitors, who will find new and surprising ways of experiencing plants and art in natural and urban settings.

Book William Trost Richards

Download or read book William Trost Richards written by Jeffery W. Howe and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The first monographic examination of William Trost Richards's (1833-1905) art in Boston, this exhibition explores the artist's career from his earliest sketches and exemplary Pre-Raphaelite technique of the 1860s, to his late masterful seascapes and landscapes. Richards's landscapes in particular come to light within the context of the nineteenth century's burgeoning appreciation for the environment. The exhibition reveals how Richards's works manifest the Romantics' hieroglyphic interpretation of nature, a metaphor embraced by Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, and reflect nascent scientific discoveries of contemporary geologists who revolutionized understanding of evolution and history. William Trost Richards: Hieroglyphs of Landscape features more than 180 oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, and sketchbooks, including many seldom-seen works owned by descendants of the artist. Other outstanding contributions come from Bowdoin College Museum of Art; Brooklyn Museum; Davis Museum at Wellesley College; Mark Twain House & Museum; McMullen Museum of Art; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Nantucket Historical Association; Newport Art Museum; Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; William Vareika Fine Arts; and many private collectors. An accompanying scholarly catalogue, edited by Jeffery Howe, contains essays by Ethan F. Baxter, Rebecca Bedell, Linda S. Ferber, Howe, and James D. Wallace. The writers probe the artist's background and psychology, illuminating links between his works and the artistic, geologic, and philosophical currents of his era."

Book Albrecht Altdorfer and the Origins of Landscape

Download or read book Albrecht Altdorfer and the Origins of Landscape written by Christopher S. Wood and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1993-12 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Altdorfer's landscapes offer a densely textured interpretation of that quintessentially German place, the forest interior. As Wood explains, however, these scenes far from doctrinally innocent: the forest that Altdorfer painted, drew, and etched is both a refuge from Christian rites and a mythical setting of idolatry. In producing his landscapes, Altdorfer flaunted and exaggerated the formal principles of a regional pictorial tradition. Wood demonstrates that the abrasive surface effects, incessant ornamental movement, and structural impenetrability of these pictures make them the incunabula of a self-resistance to literal readings, Altdorfer's landscapes also resemble the exactly contemporary pastorals and allegories of Giovanni Bellini, Lorenzo Lotto, and Giorgione. Because of Altdorfer's influence on the next generation of German and Netherlandish artists, his work forms a crucial link between Northern religious imagery and the modern development of landscape of a genre.
