Download or read book Drawing Fire written by Brummett Echohawk and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2018-12-10 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1940 Brummett Echohawk, an eighteen-year-old Pawnee boy, joined the Oklahoma National Guard. Within three years his unit, a tough collection of depression era cowboys, farmers, and more than a thousand Native Americans, would land in Europe—there to distinguish themselves as, in the words of General George Patton, “one of the best, if not the best division, in the history of American arms.” During his service with the 45th Infantry, the vaunted Thunderbirds, Echohawk tapped the talent he had honed at Pawnee boarding school to document the conflict in dozens of annotated sketches. These combat sketches form the basis of Echohawk’s memoir of service with the Thunderbirds in World War II. In scene after scene he re-creates acts of bravery and moments of terror as he and his fellow soldiers fight their way through key battles at Sicily, Salerno, and Anzio. Woven with Pawnee legend and language and quickened with wry Native wit, Drawing Fire conveys in a singular way what it was like to go to war alongside a band of Indian brothers. It stands as a tribute to those Echohawk fought with and those he lost, a sharply observed and deeply felt picture of men at arms—capturing for all time the enduring spirit and steadfast strength of the Native American warrior.

Book Drawing Lines

Download or read book Drawing Lines written by Paul Combs and published by Fire Engineering Books. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immersed in our modern fire service community is Paul Combs. Paul is the "then what" for so many of us. Just when we are leafing through the pages of Fire Engineering, Fire Rescue and Firefighter Nation-we see one of "those" drawings. The drawings that have helped every one of us with short attention spans (we love drawings) to learn...understand...pay attention and to not drift. It seems that just when we may be veering left or right-there are one of those priceless little drawings that reminds of what we really need to be focused on. It's kinda like a friend reminding you to do something...but without "saying it" in front of everyone else. Just between you, me, us and Paul. It's our little secret. He knows what the issues are. He knows where we need to be reminded. He knows when we need to be scolded...and he knows when we need to be jacked up against the wall, blasted and smacked. He knows. He knows because he is one of us. Paul rides the front seat, treats the patients, extricates the victims and crawls down the halls doing the same stuff we do each day. As you enjoy this book-and I promise that you will, take mental "screen shots" of his art/drawings/cartoons...the many "helping us make choices reminders" ...the ones that really resonate to you personally. The ones that stick. The ones that may help you not "blow" that intersection of choice, so that you can continue building on the many positive differences you have already made. So sit back, start turning these pages and enjoy Paul's mix of artistic talent and hands-on veteran firefighting experiences. Those experiences and opinions that make us all smile, think and most importantly, help guide us to do what we signed up to do—making a positive difference to those who need us...right now. —Deputy Chief Billy Goldfeder, EFO, Loveland-Symmes Fire Department, Ohio

Book excerpt: Benjamin Pogrund, who spent 26 years as a journalist in South Africa investigating apartheid and who has been living in Israel for the past 15 years, investigates the accusation that Israel is practicing apartheid and the motives of those who make it. His study is founded on a belief in Israel, combined with frank criticism, to provide a balanced view of Israel’s strengths and problems. To understand Israel today, one must first look at the past and so the book first outlines key foundational events to explain current attitudes. It then explores the contradictions found in the region, including discrimination against Israeli Arabs and among Jews, before concluding that it is wrong to affix the apartheid label to Israel inside the Green Line of 1948/1967. It also deconstructs the criticisms of Israel and the boycott movement before arguing for two states, Israeli and Palestinian, as the only way forward for Jews and Arabs. This detailed and balanced study offers a unique comparison between South Africa a

Book excerpt: Fire can fascinate, inspire, capture the imagination and bring families and communities together. It has the ability to amaze, energise and touch something deep inside all of us. For thousands of years, at every corner of the globe, humans have been huddling around fires: from the basic and primitive essentials of light, heat, energy and cooking, through to modern living, fire plays a central role in all of our lives. The ability to accurately and quickly light a fire is one of the most important skills anyone setting off on a wilderness adventure could possess, yet very little has been written about it. Through his narrative Hume also meditates on the wider topics surrounding fire and how it shapes the world around us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Painting with Fire shows how experiments with chemicals known to change visibly over the course of time transformed British pictorial arts of the long eighteenth century—and how they can alter our conceptions of photography today. As early as the 1670s, experimental philosophers at the Royal Society of London had studied the visual effects of dynamic combustibles. By the 1770s, chemical volatility became central to the ambitious paintings of Sir Joshua Reynolds, premier portraitist and first president of Britain’s Royal Academy of Arts. Valued by some critics for changing in time (and thus, for prompting intellectual reflection on the nature of time), Reynolds’s unstable chemistry also prompted new techniques of chemical replication among Matthew Boulton, James Watt, and other leading industrialists. In turn, those replicas of chemically decaying academic paintings were rediscovered in the mid-nineteenth century and claimed as origin points in the history of photography. Tracing the long arc of chemically produced and reproduced art from the 1670s through the 1860s, the book reconsiders early photography by situating it in relationship to Reynolds’s replicated paintings and the literal engines of British industry. By following the chemicals, Painting with Fire remaps familiar stories about academic painting and pictorial experiment amid the industrialization of chemical knowledge.
