Book Dramatic Stories for Reading and Acting Classic Reprint

Download or read book Dramatic Stories for Reading and Acting Classic Reprint written by Ada M. Skinner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dramatic Stories for Reading and Acting Learning to read is more than learning to recog nize and pronounce printed words. Reading In a listless manner is a dull and unprofitable exercise. In teaching children to read, the good primary teacher seeks, therefore, by furnishing an incentive through interesting material, and by stimulating intelligent and reasoned activity, to prevent discouragement and to banish ennui. Hence the value of selections that are dramatic in quality, and, to some extent, dramatic in form; for they encourage the children to read as if they were participants in the action of the story. Such material satisfies the child's love of action, stim ulates his imagination, and, by keeping his faculties alert, helps him to read with understanding and with intelligent inflection. Thus the gap between the spoken language of his daily life and the printed lan guage of the page is bridged over, and reading be comes to him a real way of acquiring and conveying ideas. Book excerpt: In this riveting and surprising personal history, John Lithgow shares a backstage view of his own struggle, crisis, and discovery, revealing the early life and career that took place out of the public eye and before he became a nationally known star. Above all, Lithgow’s memoir is a tribute to his most important influence: his father, Arthur Lithgow, who, as an actor, director, producer, and great lover of Shakespeare, brought theater to John’s boyhood. From bedtime stories to Arthur’s illustrious productions, performance and storytelling were constant and cherished parts of family life. Drama tells of the Lithgows’ countless moves between Arthur’s gigs—John attended eight secondary schools before flourishing onstage at Harvard—and details with poignancy and sharp recollection the moments that introduced a budding young actor to the undeniable power of theater. Before Lithgow gained fame with the film The World According to Garp and the television show 3rd Rock from the Sun, his early years were full of scenes both hilarious and bittersweet. A shrewd acting performance saved him from duty in Vietnam. His involvement with a Broadway costar brought an end to his early first marriage. The theater worlds of New York and London come alive as Lithgow relives his collaborations with renowned performers and directors, including Mike Nichols, Bob Fosse, Liv Ullmann, and Meryl Streep. His ruminations on the nature of theater, film acting, and storytelling cut to the heart of why actors are driven to perform, and why people are driven to watch them do it. Lithgow’s memory is clear and his wit sharp, and much of the humor that runs throughout Drama comes at his own expense. But he also chronicles the harrowing moments of his past, reflecting with moving candor on friends made and lost, mistakes large and small, and the powerful love of a father who set him on the road to a life onstage. Illuminating, funny, affecting, and thoroughly engrossing, Drama raises the curtain on the making of one of our most beloved actors.

Book Unfixable Forms

  • Author : Katherine Schaap Williams
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2021-06-15
  • ISBN : 1501753517

Download or read book Unfixable Forms written by Katherine Schaap Williams and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unfixable Forms explores how theatrical form remakes—and is in turn remade by—early modern disability. Figures described as "deformed," "lame," "crippled," "ugly," "sick," and "monstrous" crowd the stage in English drama of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In each case, such a description distills cultural expectations about how a body should look and what a body should do—yet, crucially, demands the actor's embodied performance. In the early modern theater, concepts of disability collide with the deforming, vulnerable body of the actor. Reading dramatic texts alongside a diverse array of sources, ranging from physic manuals to philosophical essays to monster pamphlets, Katherine Schaap Williams excavates an archive of formal innovation to argue that disability is at the heart of the early modern theater's exploration of what it means to put the body of an actor on the stage. Offering new interpretations of canonical works by William Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, Thomas Dekker, Thomas Middleton, and William Rowley, and close readings of little-known plays such as The Fair Maid of the Exchange and A Larum For London, Williams demonstrates how disability cuts across foundational distinctions between nature and art, form and matter, and being and seeming. Situated at the intersections of early modern drama, disability studies, and performance theory, Unfixable Forms locates disability on the early modern stage as both a product of cultural constraints and a spark for performance's unsettling demands and electrifying eventfulness.

Book Seneca by Candlelight and Other Stories of Renaissance Drama

Download or read book Seneca by Candlelight and Other Stories of Renaissance Drama written by Lorraine Helms and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2017-01-31 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected by Choice magazine as an Outstanding Academic Book "English Seneca read by candlelight," wrote the Elizabethan author Thomas Nashe, "will afford you whole Hamlets." In the early decades of the twentieth century, literary and theater historians took Nashe at his word, finding Senecan tragedy at the source of Renaissance drama. More recently, critics have been inclined to dismiss traces of classical antiquity as a superficial veneer on a drama derived from medieval traditions. Lorraine Helms revisits this terrain to explore the rich and various ways in which classical learning shaped the theatrical culture of the Renaissance. She uncovers the practical advice on acting and stagecraft to be found in the writings of ancient rhetoricians; reconstructs the extraordinary circumstances under which an English woman first rendered Euripides into her native language; and ponders the precedents in antiquity for Elizabethan portrayals of prostitution and female martyrdom.
