Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chambers provides a defense of our traditional worship format by contrasting it with the style and content of the new wave of contemporary worship assemblies dominated by drama, special singing, and lifting hands. "With amazing clarity; with a grateful grasp of current problems in public worship; with a fairness that is totally Christian, Dan Chambers has produced a work of monumental importance speaking to worship needs of this day." -- Jim Bill McInteer "By focusing the spotlight on biblical, worthy worship, Chambers brings the curtain down on current calls for entertainment-style showtime during our gathered celebration of the divine drama." -- F. LaGard Smith "I do not know of any study that is more needed in the churches today than this study of worship by Dan Chambers. The study is comprehensive, balanced, in touch with contemporary thought, and thoroughly biblical. It is my hope that it will be widely used as a text in Bible study classes as well as by individual students interested in meaningful worship. The book is an engaging and cogent plea for a more biblical approach to worship." -- Harvey Floyd Dan Chambers preaches for the Concord Road congregation in Brentwood, Tennessee. He has also served as an adjunct instructor in Bible at David Lipscomb University in Nashville. He has done graduate work in theology at Grace Theological Seminary and has received advanced degrees in Bible from David Lipscomb University (M.A., M.A.R) and in Business Management from Indiana University - Ft. • Pages : 93 pages

Download or read book Worship Innovations written by Janet Burton and published by CSS Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Worship Innovations: Easy Bible Drama, you will meet Bible persons just outside their recorded stories. Listen to Sarah and Isaac on the evening he returns from Mount Moriah; watch Joseph (in Potiphar's jail) confront Satan about whether integrity pays. Agonize with Anne (the mother of Mary) as she sends her daughter off to register for taxes in Bethlehem; hear the private conversation of Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea following Nicodemus' secret meeting with Jesus. Each of these fifteen sketches raises issues and questions designed to take readers deeper into a study of the Bible story itself. They can form the heart of a dynamic worship service, inspire a sermon, brighten a Bible study, or energize a personal walk in the word of God. Also included is "Everything You Need To Know About Easy Bible Drama," a chapter of "how-to's" for any church that wants to initiate the use of drama in worship. Any worship leader who has ever looked for thoughtful and inspiring Bible drama will profit from Worship Innovations: Easy Bible Drama by Janet Burton. Yes, the drama is easy, but it is also wonderfully creative. The stories are short and the settings simple, but still thought-provoking for both actors and audience.... Burton tells you how to recruit actors, schedule rehearsals, make costumes, and build settings.... These simple dramas will make your worship and praise deep for the heart, and inspiring for the mind. Book The Materiality of Religion in Early Modern English Drama

Download or read book The Materiality of Religion in Early Modern English Drama written by Elizabeth Williamson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Materiality of Religion in Early Modern English Drama is the first book to present a detailed examination of early modern theatrical properties informed by the complexity of post-Reformation religious practice. Although English Protestant reformers set out to destroy all vestiges of Catholic idolatry, public theater companies frequently used stage properties to draw attention to the remnants of traditional religion as well as the persistent materiality of post-Reformation worship. The Materiality of Religion in Early Modern English Drama explores the relationship between popular culture and theatrical performance by considering the social history and dramatic function of these properties, addressing their role as objects of devotion, idolatry, and remembrance on the professional stage. Rather than being aligned with identifiably Catholic or Protestant values, the author reveals how religious stage properties functioned as fulcrums around which more subtle debates about the status of Christian worship played out. Given the relative lack of existing documentation on stage properties, The Materiality of Religion in Early Modern English Drama employs a wide range of source materials-including inventories published in the Records of Early English Drama (REED) volumes-to account for the material presence of these objects on the public stage. By combining historical research on popular religion with detailed readings of the scripts themselves, the book fills a gap in our knowledge about the physical qualities of the stage properties used in early modern productions. Tracing the theater's appropriation of highly charged religious properties, The Materiality of Religion in Early Modern English Drama provides a new framework for understanding the canonization of early modern plays, especially those of Shakespeare.
