Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a review of the principles and methods of drainage with an emphasis on design. The whole field of drainage is covered, and although the book concentrates mainly on the practice in North America, Europe and Britain, the practice in developing countries is also included. The book is directed primarily at the graduate engineer entering professional practice, but will also provide a useful reference for more senior engineers and for those in adjunct professions. Chapter 1 outlines the necessity for drainage on a large or small scale, for rural and urban areas. As the drainage engineer must decide how much unwanted water there will be and when it will occur, the chapter discusses climatic types, prediction of rainfall, evapotranspiration effects, return periods (of design storms and runoff events), river flow and flood prediction, and various sensing systems for providing short term predictions of rainfall, runoff, streamflow and flood warning. Chapter 2 gives a thorough review of the properties of soil in the context of drainage design. The extensive mathematical theories which relate to the crucial area of soil water movement are outlined and due attention is paid to the growing importance of predicting soil water movement in partially saturated soils.

Book ABC of Tubes Drains Lines and Frames

Download or read book ABC of Tubes Drains Lines and Frames written by Adam Brooks and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-04-13 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surgical patients are increasingly undergoing operative proceduresthat require complex post-operative care followed by prolongedrehabilitation in the community, and few leave surgery without awound, tube, line or drain. The care of these surgical adjuncts isundertaken either in hospital by ward staff or away from thehospital in the community, where GPs and practice nurses areexpected to take over the day-to-day management of this care. The ABC of Tubes, Drains, Lines and Frames is a practicalguide that provides a clear account of the key issues involved inthe assessment and management of surgical wounds, tubes, drains, lines and stomas – from the operating theatre to the CriticalCare unit and from the ward into the community. It highlightscommon pitfalls and includes ‘trouble shooting’sections that provide an understanding of the issues at all stagesof post-operative care. This new ABC is an invaluable resource for all GPs,practice nurses, surgical nurses, junior doctors, and communityparamedics.

Book The Inter Relationship Between Irrigation Drainage and the Environment in the Aral Sea Basin

Download or read book The Inter Relationship Between Irrigation Drainage and the Environment in the Aral Sea Basin written by M.G. Bos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The irrigated area in the Aral Sea basin totals about 7. 5 million hectare. Part of the water supplied to this area is consumed by the irrigated crop; the remainder of the supplied water drains to the groundwater basin, to downstream depressions, or back to the rivers. During its use, however, this drained part of the water accumulates salts and chemicals. The disposal of this polluted water causes a variety of (environmental) problems. If the percentage consumed water of the total water supply to an irrigated area (the so-called overall consumed ratio) can be increased, less water needs to be drained. This alleviates part of the related (environmental) problems. Further, if the overall consumed ratio for the above 7. 5 million hectare is improved, less water needs to be diverted from the rivers. Hence, more water can flow towards the Aral Sea. As mentioned above, part of the non-consumed irrigation water drains to the groundwater basin. Commonly, the natural discharge capacity of this basin is insufficient to handle this imported water. As a result, the groundwater table rises towards the land surface causing waterlogging. In (semi-)arid zones this waterlogging triggers a soil salinity problem resulting to a significant reduction in crop yields. The artificial increase of the discharge capacity, and lowering of the groundwater table, solves the soil salinity problem.
