Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rainbow Nation benefits from an internationally competitive private sector, which accounts for roughly 70% of GDP, and extremely competitive infrastructure; its utility sector, for example, produces just under half of the total power generated on the African continent. South Africa represents by far the most developed market in Africa, but there are still some structural challenges it is grappling with. Government strategies have set a target of increasing labour market participation from 54% in 2010 to 65% by 2030, bringing the number of workers in the formal sector to 25.3m people and lowering unemployment from 25% to 6%. While its fiscal space is narrow, long-term investments in infrastructure, education and health are expected to be key to attaining its growth potential. Recent years have seen both the public and private sectors look to strengthen regulatory frameworks in mining and industry – in some cases, like the automotive sector, with impressive results.

Book Improving Health Service Delivery in Developing Countries

Download or read book Improving Health Service Delivery in Developing Countries written by David H. Peters and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2009 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reliable information on how health service strategies affect the poor is in short supply. In an attempt to redress the imbalance, 'Improving Health Service Delivery in Developing Countries' presents evidence on strategies for strengthening health service delivery, based on systematic reviews of the literature, quantitative and qualitative analyses of existing data, and seven country case studies. The authors also explore how changes in coverage of different health services affect each other on the national level. Finally, the authors explain why setting international targets for health services has been not been successful and offer an alternative approach based on a specific country's experience. The book's findings are clear and hopeful: There are many ways to improve health services. Measuring change and using information to guide decisions and inform stakeholders are critically important for successful implementation. Asking difficult questions, using information intelligently, and involving key stakeholders and institutions are central to the "learning and doing" practices that underlie successful health service delivery.

This book was released on 2022-01-18 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, decision-makers in affected countries have acted quickly to address the immediate health effects of the pandemic and to put into place public health and social measures to slow or stop the spread of COVID-19. In order to preserve the gains made in maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health in the last decades and avoid negative impacts due to the pandemic, the global community quickly mobilized to advocate for protecting the health of these populations. Since May 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO), through its headquarters, regional and country office teams, has supported 19 countries in five WHO Regions (see Figure 1) to raise the profile of and commitment to maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health and ageing (MNCAAH)b through an Initiative on mitigating the indirect impacts of COVID-19 on MNCAAH services. The goal was to ensure that during the response to COVID-19, actions would be taken to mitigate indirect effects on MNCAAH due to disruptions to service provision and use.

Book Governing Health Systems in Africa

Download or read book Governing Health Systems in Africa written by Martyn Sama and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2008 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on various disciplinary perspectives, this book re-focuses the debate on what makes a good health system, with a view to clarifying the uses of social science research in thinking about health care issues in Africa. The explosion of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, the persistence of malaria as a major killer, and the resurgence of diseases like tuberculosis which were previously under control, have brought about changes in the health system, with implications for its governance, especially in view of the diminished capacity of the public health facilities to cope with a complex range of expanded needs. Government responsibilities and objectives in the health sector have been redefined, with private sector entities (both for profit and not-for profit) playing an increasingly visible role in health care provisions. The reasons for collaborative patterns vary, but chronic under-funding of publicly financed health services is often an important factor. Processes of decentralisation and health sector reforms have had mixed effects on health care system performance; while private health insurance markets and private clinics are pointers to a growing stratification of the health market, in line with the intensified income and social differentiation that has occurred over the last two decades. These developments call for health sector reforms.

Book Developing Maternal Health Decision Support Systems in Developing Countries

Download or read book Developing Maternal Health Decision Support Systems in Developing Countries written by Mzazi, Vincent and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-03-19 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Implementation of guidelines in the health system is a major undertaking, especially in developing countries. An important constraint in guideline development in developing countries is that the guideline recommendations must suit local conditions and must make use of available resources. This is a challenge because the health systems of developing countries have a high burden of disease and little resources; therefore, guidelines must rely on cost-effective healthcare interventions. The BACIS program study was initiated to address some of these challenges in the dissemination and utilization of maternal health guidelines. The BACIS program was piloted, and the results showed that the BACIS program could assist in improving compliance of nurses with the national maternity care guidelines. This is an impressive finding and step forward for maternal healthcare in developing countries. Developing Maternal Health Decision Support Systems in Developing Countries discusses public health aspects of the design and implementation of clinical decision support systems in developing country contexts. Specifically, it focuses largely on the design and evaluation of the BACIS program in South Africa. This is supplemented with a conversation on the possible future research directions in the BACIS program study along with the outlook for clinical decision support systems in developing country contexts in general. This book is ideal for e-health system designers and implementers, managers and policymakers in the area of e-health in developing countries, personnel from NPOs and donor agencies, government officials, IT consultants, medical professionals, practitioners, stakeholders, researchers, academicians, and students who are interested in how decision support systems such as BACIS are being used to improve maternal health in developing countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. It bridges management and economic sciences - two complementary sciences that feed the process of making rational decisions. With particular reference to the education, the main aim of this book is to provide students of relevant schools and departments with the knowledge (managerial and economic) that will enable them to deal both efficiently and effectively with the real problems arising in a health care organization such as a hospital. In particular, by equipping students with appropriate managerial and economic knowledge, the aim is to give them a clear understanding of HOW to deal with the diverse and complex problems of hospitals while at the same time helping them to develop strategic approaches that will make hospitals more efficient and sustainable.
