This book was released on 1995 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work plan, prepared by Parsons Engineering Science, Inc. (Parsons ES), presents the scope of work required for the collection of data necessary to conduct an engineering evaluation/cost analysis (EE/CA) for remediation of groundwater contaminated with petroleum products at the former Aerospace Ground Equipment (AGE) fueling facility adjacent to Building 4715 located at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base (AFB), Goldsboro, NC. This EE/CA will provide the framework for the site's Corrective Action Plan under the North Carolina requirements. Several remedial options will be evaluated during the EE/CA possibly including free product removal; groundwater extraction, treatment, and reinjection (i.e., pump and treat); air sparging; and natural contaminant attenuation (intrinsic remediation) with long-term monitoring. All hydrogeologic and groundwater chemical data necessary to evaluate the various remedial options will be collected under this program. However, this work plan is oriented toward the collection of hydrogeologic data to be used in support of intrinsic remediation for restoration of fuel-hydrocarbon-contaminated groundwater. When applicable, site-specific information may be obtained from previous studies conducted at Seymour Johnson AFB.

This addendum to the EE/CA summarizes the results of a groundwater sampling event conducted in April 2001 by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL) Subsurface Protection Division and Parsons ES. Results of this sampling event are used to evaluate spatial and temporal trends of groundwater contaminants at the AGE Site.

Book Work Plan for an Engineering Evaluation Cost Analysis in Support of the Risk Based Approach to Remediation at Site ST14

Download or read book Work Plan for an Engineering Evaluation Cost Analysis in Support of the Risk Based Approach to Remediation at Site ST14 written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work plan was prepared by Engineering-Science, Inc. (ES) and describes the scope of work required for the collection and analysis of data to complete an engineering evaluation/cost analysis (BE/CA) in support of a risk-based remediation decision for soil and ground water contaminated with JP-4 fuel hydrocarbons at Site STl4 at Carswell Air Force Base (AFB), Fort Worth, Texas. Site STl4 consists of two separate sites: Site STl4A, the Fuel Loading Area, and Site STl4B, the petroleum, oil, and lubricant (POL) tank farm. This work plan is the equivalent of a treatability study test design (TSTD) for the field test of the risk-based approach for the remediation of Site ST 14. This innovative technology demonstration is sponsored by the Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence (AFCEE) at Brooks AFB, Texas, under contract F41624-93-C-8044, "Risk-Based Approach to Fuel Spill Remediation." The Site STl4 demonstration is a component of a multi-site initiative being sponsored by AFCEE to demonstrate how quantitative fate and transport calculations and risk information based on site-specific data can be integrated to quickly determine the type and magnitude of remedial action required at a site to minimize contaminant migration and receptor risks.

Book The Economics of Groundwater Remediation and Protection

Download or read book The Economics of Groundwater Remediation and Protection written by Paul E. Hardisty and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2004-12-20 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic literature is often too theoretical for engineers and policymakers to put into practical use, while scientific literature on the remediation of contaminated aquifers rarely considers costs and benefits. Written by a hydrogeologist and an economist, The Economics of Groundwater Remediation and Protection integrates economics and cost-benefit analysis tools with optimal protection and remediation strategies for groundwater resources. The book provides a thorough introduction of the concepts of groundwater flow and contaminant transport, and the basics of economic decision making techniques. It illustrates the types of risks and impacts caused by groundwater contamination, and the economic benefits of its remediation. The volume reviews a wide range of issues such as cost, implementation, and expectations of success for the latest remediation trends and techniques. The book shows how economic analysis can be used to determine how much we should pay for groundwater clean-up, and when spending too much - or too little - actually makes us all worse-off. The authors' step-by-step methodology for decision-making focuses on determining optimal remedial objectives, from containment to extensive cleanup, and the selection of least-cost alternatives. They use examples from their personal experience to illustrate the methodologies in action and put the issues into perspective. Combining the theoretical and practical aspects of science, policy, and economics, this book places the importance of groundwater remediation in the context of environmental economics, protection, and preservation. The Economics of Groundwater Remediation and Protection is also an excellent introduction to innovative solutions for funding remediation projects, education, and incentive programs, such as mitigation banking, land pollution credit schemes, and conservation credit alternatives.

Book Alternatives for Ground Water Cleanup

Download or read book Alternatives for Ground Water Cleanup written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1994-02-01 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There may be nearly 300,000 waste sites in the United States where ground water and soil are contaminated. Yet recent studies question whether existing technologies can restore contaminated ground water to drinking water standards, which is the goal for most sites and the result expected by the public. How can the nation balance public health, technological realities, and cost when addressing ground water cleanup? This new volume offers specific conclusions, outlines research needs, and recommends policies that are technologically sound while still protecting health and the environment. Authored by the top experts from industry and academia, this volume: Examines how the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of the subsurface environment, as well as the properties of contaminants, complicate the cleanup task. Reviews the limitations of widely used conventional pump-and-treat cleanup systems, including detailed case studies. Evaluates a range of innovative cleanup technologies and the barriers to their full implementation. Presents specific recommendations for policies and practices in evaluating contamination sites, in choosing remediation technologies, and in setting appropriate cleanup goals.
