Book excerpt: Autoimmune and chronic illness are a global crisis, with an estimated 50 million sufferers in the US alone. While modern medicine has drastically reduced overall mortality rates--from heart disease, stroke, HIV, and even cancer--what is fueling this twenty-first century pandemic? In this eye-opening, provocative book, Steven Phillips, MD, and his former patient, singer/songwriter Dana Parish, take on the medical establishment. Backed by a trove of published data, Chronic reveals striking evidence that a broad range of microbes, including the Lyme bacteria, cause a variety of recurrent conditions and autoimmune diseases. Chronic delves into the history and science behind common infections that are difficult to diagnose and treat, debunks widely held beliefs by doctors and patients alike, reveals how medicine got the facts patently wrong, and provides solutions that empower readers to get their lives back. Dr. Phillips was already an internationally renowned physician specializing in complex, chronic diseases when he became a patient himself. After nearly dying from his own mystery illness, he experienced firsthand the medical community's ignorance about the pathogens that underlie a range of chronic conditions--from fibromyalgia, lupus, multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, and rheumatoid arthritis to depression, anxiety, and neurodegenerative disorders. Parish, too, watched her health spiral after twelve top doctors missed an underlying infection that caused heart failure and other sudden, debilitating physical and psychiatric symptoms. Now, they've come together with a mission: to change the current model of simply treating symptoms, often with dangerous, lifelong drugs, and shift the focus to finding and curing root causes of chronic diseases that affect millions around the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christopher Phillips has devoted his life to carrying the torch of Socrates and his quest to “Know Thyself.” Yet upon the death of his beloved father and mentor, the originator of the burgeoning global Socrates Café movement had little choice but to confront the inescapable truth: that there are some things we cannot know for sure. This moving, insightful and ultimately hopeful and helpful blend of memoir and philosophical exploration begins in Phillips’ native stomping grounds of the tiny volcanic island of Nisyros, Greece and unfurls through space and time as the author explores the connections between his immediate circumstances and the eternal wisdom of popular philosophers. – In this personal and probing book, the acclaimed ‘philosopher for the people’ shares lessons gleaned from his intimate and often unexpected encounters with uncommonly perceptive human beings both living and long deceased, in the form of weary travelers and some of history’s greatest thinkers, from Heraclitus to Dr. Cornel West. Along the way, he charts a pathway for sculpting what Shakespeare describes as a “soul of goodness,” which meshes with Plato’s paradigm-shattering conception of the “healthiness of soul.” For those struggling to overcome the hopelessness that can result from grievous loss, setback, or betrayal – what Phillips’ touchstone Percy Blythe Shelley calls life circumstances “darker than death or night” – the author spotlights, with philosophical prescriptions both timely and timeless, how to cultivate a ‘Socratic spirit’ that leads to renewed love, forbearance, and hope at the other end of the tunnel.

Book Understanding Body Dysmorphic Disorder

Download or read book Understanding Body Dysmorphic Disorder written by Katharine A. Phillips and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-20 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world obsessed with appearance, it is not surprising that body dysmorphic disorder, or BDD -- an emotionally painful obsession with perceived flaws in one's appearance -- has manifested itself as a troubling and relatively common problem for many individuals. In The Broken Mirror, the first and most definitive book on BDD, Dr. Katharine A. Phillips provided a comprehensive manual for patients and their physicians by drawing on years of clinical practice, scientific research, and professional evaluations of over 1,000 patients. Now, in Understanding Body Dysmorphic Disorder: An Essential Guide , the world's leading authority on BDD reaches out to patients, their friends, and their families with this concise and updated handbook. BDD causes sufferers to be obsessed by perceived flaws in their appearance and may afflict as much as two percent of the population, or nearly five million people. Many sufferers are able to function well in society, but remain secretly obsessed by their "hideous acne" or "horrible nose," sneaking constant peeks at a pocket mirror, or spending hours at a time redoing makeup. Others find their lives disintegrate because of their appearance obsessions. It is not an uncommon disorder, simply a hidden one, since sufferers are often embarrassed to tell even their closest friends about their concerns. Using stories and interviews to show the many different behaviors and symptoms of BDD, and a quick self-assessment questionnaire, Dr. Phillips guides readers through the basics of the disorder and through the many treatment options that work and don't work. With Understanding Body Dysmorphic Disorder: An Essential Guide, sufferers will find both helpful advice and much needed reassurance in a compact, down-to-earth indispensable book.

In the original edition of The Broken Mirror, the first book ever written on the topic of BDD, Dr. Katharine Phillips brought readers an authoritative and comprehensive guide to this often-debilitating illness. Like the original, this Revised and Expanded Edition draws on Dr. Phillips' years of clinical practice and scientific research, including professional evaluations of approximately 900 individuals with BDD. Phillips describes severe cases, but also a multitude of milder cases. Book Wrong Lanes Have Right Turns

Download or read book Wrong Lanes Have Right Turns written by Michael Phillips and published by WaterBrook. This book was released on 2022-01-25 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unforgettable true story of one man’s escape from the school-to-prison pipeline, how he reinvented himself as a pastor and education reform advocate, and what his journey can teach us about turning the collateral damage in the lives of our youth into hope. “A heart-wrenching and triumphant story that will change lives.”—Bishop T. D. Jakes Michael Phillips would never become anything. At least, that’s what he was told. It seemed like everyone was waiting for him to just fall through the cracks. After losing his father, suffering a life-altering car accident, and losing his college scholarship, Michael turned to selling drugs to make ends meet. But when his house was raided, he was arrested and thrown into a living nightmare. When it looked like he would be sentenced to spend years behind bars, the judge gave him a choice—go to a special college program for adjudicated youth or face the possibility of a thirty-year prison sentence. It wasn’t hard to pick. From that choice, a mission was born—to help change the system that shuffles so many young Black men like Michael straight from school to prison. Today, Michael is the pastor of a thriving church, a local leader in Baltimore, and a member of the Maryland State Board of Education. He discovered that education was the path to becoming who he was created to be. Armed with research, statistics, and his powerful story, Michael tackles the embedded privilege of the education system and introduces ideas for change that could level the playing field and reduce negative impacts on vulnerable youth. He explores ways in which the readers can help advocate and provide resources for students, and points us to the one thing anyone can start doing, no matter who we are or what our role is: speak into young kids’ lives. Tell them of their inherent worth and purpose. In this inspiring, thought-provoking, and energizing call to action, Michael’s practical steps provide a way forward to anyone wanting to help create space for collateral hope in the lives of for young people around them.

Book Mouth Care Comes Clean

Download or read book Mouth Care Comes Clean written by Ellie Phillips DDS and published by Greenleaf Book Group. This book was released on 2018-12-04 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enjoy the Mouth Health You Deserve! Dr. Ellie challenges the traditional dental mantra that tells us to “brush and floss” because she believes it is dangerous advice and ineffective in light of our understanding that cavities and gum disease are bacterial infections. Oral health depends on the development of a bacterial balance in the mouth, and this cannot be achieved with a length of floss, by over-zealous cleaning, or indiscriminate killing of mouth bacteria. Our mouth ecology develops early in life as bacteria transfer between parents and their babies. This exchange is important and continues throughout life as family and friends kiss, talk, or simply share food. Today we know that harmful mouth bacteria can impact our general health and that some are implicated in chronic inflammatory conditions. A healthy mouth will give you a brighter smile and provide special protection from cavities, gum disease, bad breath, sensitivity, and enamel erosion to ultimately limit your need for dental treatments—including cleanings, fillings, sealants, root canals, crowns, implants, and extractions. In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Ellie shares her easy-to-follow strategies that put oral health under your control. She reveals how to: • Stop and reverse cavities and gum disease • Use diet and digestive health to influence saliva quality and promote tooth and gum healing • Enjoy xylitol to control acidic damage and sensitivity • End the discomfort of dry mouth and gum recession • Avoid damage caused by flossing • Evaluate sealants and their potential dangers • Learn the dangers of artificial whitening and how to naturally whiten your teeth Mouth Care Comes Clean can empower you and lead you to a new level of oral health. The strategies are simple but they can miraculously transform mouth health.

Book Abba s House Dr Ron Phillips and the Silence of the Spirit

Download or read book Abba s House Dr Ron Phillips and the Silence of the Spirit written by Pamela Alexander and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-10 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the nineties, a large church in Hixson, Tennessee called Central Baptist Church began undergoing a tremendous fundamental transformation, engineered by the pastor, Dr. Ron Phillips. The initial stage of that change included driving out the trustees who oversaw the finances of the church, putting Dr. Phillips in control of all monies from thousands of congregants. The theology of the church was altered to conform to an experience that Dr. Phillips claimed to have had while in a hotel room, and the original Baptist beliefs were over-thrown. Dr. Phillips became unapproachable, and he surrounded himself with Assistant Pastors that bahaved more like body guards, and while hundreds of people left Central Baptist on their own, many others were deliberately kickd out of the church by Ron Phillips and his associates. Dr.Phillips's main goal was to build a mega church that conformed to his image: Abba's House. Dr. Phillips began to focus entirely on something called the "annointing" of the Holy Spirit, and he made statements such as, "I am Thee Prophet here, and no one gets a word from God but me!" This is my story, as one kicked out of my church home by Ron Phillips, of how the Holy Spirit was not unleashed at Central Baptist Church after Dr. Phillips's coup. I argue that the Holy Spirit was silenced; Christians were silenced; anyone who disagreed with Ron Phillips was intimidated or cast out in order to silence them. Anyone who spoke up during this time, Ron Phillips called them "out of line."Allow me now to get way out of line with his false teachings.

Inside the walls of Indiana’s elite Westmont Preparatory High School, expectations run high and rules are strictly enforced. Rory is working on the podcast with Lane, recreating the night of the killings in order to find the elusive answers. But the more they learn, the more convinced they are that the sinister game inside Westmont Prep hasn’t ended. It thrives on secrecy and silence.
