The community of Norseton has been in a state of disorder since the young princess Tess was kidnapped more than two decades ago. Her return to the long-secluded tribe of psychics should have marked a return to the tranquility they knew in their first centuries in America, but there’s still work to be done. She needs her older brothers’ help to root out traitors and track the mastermind behind the plot to unravel the community. One brother chases a mate who’s vanished under mysterious circumstances. The other is embroiled in a testy trio with the daughter of the man who tops Norseton’s public enemy list and the fairy who’s only ever seen him at his worst. Can the Dahl men be the emissaries the Afótama need when the heightened urgency for them to secure their mates distracts them from their missions? And as the fount of their wild magic, Ótama, takes a more hands-on approach to community threats, will the peaceable culture of the clan change as they all know it?

Book Aaron McDuffie Moore

Download or read book Aaron McDuffie Moore written by Blake Hill-Saya and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2020-03-02 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aaron McDuffie Moore (1863–1923) was born in rural Columbus County in eastern North Carolina at the close of the Civil War. Defying the odds stacked against an African American of this era, he pursued an education, alternating between work on the family farm and attending school. Moore originally dreamed of becoming an educator and attended notable teacher training schools in the state. But later, while at Shaw University, he followed another passion and entered Leonard Medical School. Dr. Moore graduated with honors in 1888 and became the first practicing African American physician in the city of Durham, North Carolina. He went on to establish the Durham Drug Company and the Durham Colored Library; spearhead and run Lincoln Hospital, the city's first secular, freestanding African American hospital; cofound North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company; help launch Rosenwald schools for African American children statewide; and foster the development of Durham's Hayti community. Dr. Moore was one-third of the mighty "Triumvirate" alongside John Merrick and C. C. Spaulding, credited with establishing Durham as the capital of the African American middle class in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and founding Durham's famed Black Wall Street. His legacy can still be seen on the city streets and country backroads today, and an examination of his life provides key insights into the history of Durham, the state, and the nation during Reconstruction and the beginning of the Jim Crow Era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, a true multidisciplinary approach to cutaneous malignancy of the head and neck is presented, as international experts in head and neck surgical oncology, dermatology, Mohs micrographic surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, radiation oncology, and medical oncology present state-of-the-art techniques and promising horizons in the treatment of cutaneous malignancy of the head and neck. Whether in primary care or a specialty practice, this text should prove invaluable to any practitioner who treats patients with skin cancer of the head and neck. This is the only textbook on this subject that comprehensively addresses patient management - from diagnosis, treatment (in all forms, including chemotherapy and radiation), and reconstruction. This book makes preparation for actual patient care or presentations simpler and easier; currently, someone wanting to study this field would have to get articles, a head and neck surgery text, and a facial plastic/reconstruction text to gather all the information that is presented here. This book is suitable for ENT surgeons, plastic surgeons, general surgical oncologists, dermatologists, and even radiation/medical oncologists in endemic areas who treat patients with aggressive cutaneous malignancies. Each chapter has information that will be valuable to both seasoned practitioners and residents in training.

Book excerpt: AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER ONE OF TIME’S 100 MOST INFLUENTUAL PEOPLE IN GLOBAL HEALTH “This book is more than a memoir—it also serves as a call to action to create a more equitable healthcare system for patients of color, particularly Black women.” —Essence One of NPR’s 11 Books to Look Forward to in 2024 One of Good Morning America’s 15 New Books to Read for the New Year “Legacy is both a compelling memoir and an edifying analysis of the inequities in the way we deliver healthcare in America. Uché Blackstock is a force of nature.” —Abraham Verghese, MD, New York Times bestselling author of The Covenant of Water “[An] extraordinary family story.” —Dr. Damon Tweedy, The New York Times Book Review “This book should be required reading for all medical students.” —Gayle King, CBS Mornings The rousing, captivating story of a Black physician, her career in medicine, and the deep inequities that still exist in the U.S. healthcare system Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, it never occurred to Uché Blackstock and her twin sister, Oni, that they would be anything but physicians. In the 1980s, their mother headed an organization of Black women physicians, and for years the girls watched these fiercely intelligent women in white coats tend to their patients and neighbors, host community health fairs, cure ills, and save lives. What Dr. Uché Blackstock did not understand as a child—or learn about at Harvard Medical School, where she and her sister had followed in their mother’s footsteps, making them the first Black mother-daughter legacies from the school—were the profound and long-standing systemic inequities that mean just 2 percent of all U.S. physicians today are Black women; the racist practices and policies that ensure Black Americans have far worse health outcomes than any other group in the country; and the flawed system that endangers the well-being of communities like theirs. As an ER physician, and later as a professor in academic medicine, Dr. Blackstock became profoundly aware of the systemic barriers that Black patients and physicians continue to face. Legacy is a journey through the critical intersection of racism and healthcare. At once a searing indictment of our healthcare system, a generational family memoir, and a call to action, Legacy is Dr. Blackstock’s odyssey from child to medical student to practicing physician—to finally seizing her own power as a health equity advocate against the backdrop of the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement.

Book excerpt: Title: INITIATING A LEGACY OF POEMS WAS DESIGNED TO: Provide a written record of my life- transforming decisions and experiences for my descendants. It is something that I wished had been available for me to assist in my positive self-development as a young man. Record the lessons on life learned from my father and his father to be passed down to future generations. To serve as a guide and template for others who desires to reflect upon their relationships and experiences. Encourage other men in refining and expanding their sense of purpose and destiny. Serve as an example to many of my cultural and spiritual brothers of the importance of recording a written legacy. Legacy Journal of Personal Transformation is an open-ended work of poems and other literature that will be used in the context of speaking with my offspring and their progeny to fill in the dash between the date on which I was born and the date on which I physically depart this dear earth. It is my intention to continue to record my personal life's journey, the significant events in my life and the decisions that resulted. May my vulnerability expressed in these writings assist my heirs and others in becoming more aware of the presence, plans, power and purpose of God. May they treasure the blessings of many past generations who have prayed for them and labored knowing that they would never see this day. 1. Proverbs 13:22 A good man leaves an inheritance for his children's children, but a sinner's wealth is stored up for the righteous.

Book A Legacy of Preaching Two Volume Set Apostles to the Present Day

Download or read book A Legacy of Preaching Two Volume Set Apostles to the Present Day written by Zondervan, and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2018-12-11 with total page 934 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Legacy of Preaching, Two-Volume Set--Apostles to the Present Day explores the history and development of preaching through a biographical and theological examination of its most important preachers. Instead of teaching the history of preaching from the perspective of movements and eras, each contributor tells the story of a particular preacher in history, allowing these preachers from the past to come alive and instruct us through their lives, theologies, and methods of preaching. Each chapter introduces readers to a key figure in the history of preaching, followed by an analysis of the theological views that shaped their preaching, their methodology of sermon preparation and delivery, and an appraisal of the significant contributions they have made to the history of preaching. This diverse collection of familiar and lesser-known individuals provides a detailed and fascinating look at what it has meant to communicate the gospel over the past two thousand years. By looking at how the gospel has been communicated over time and across different cultures, pastors, scholars, and homiletics students can enrich their own understanding and practice of preaching for application today. Volume One covers the period from the apostles to the Puritans and profiles thirty preachers including: Origen of Alexandria by Stephen O. Presley John Chrysostom by Paul A. Hartog Augustine of Hippo by Edward L. Smither Gregory the Great by W. Brian Shelton Bernard of Clairvaux by Elizabeth Hoare Francis of Assisi by Timothy D. Holder Saint Bonaventure by G. R. Download or read book A Shared Legacy written by Fintan Cullen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Shared Legacy: Essays on Irish and Scottish Art and Visual Culture brings together for the first time a unique selection of new research by leading Irish, Scottish, English and North American scholars to explore the varying ways in which the visual can operate within the context of two countries with related experiences of lost statehood yet retained nationhood. Covering a span of three centuries, this skilfully-crafted book takes the discussion of Irish and Scottish art beyond the often isolationist approach adopted in the past, dealing directly with issues of nationality in a wider context. The authors identify national concerns through a range of themes: race, class, union and assimilation or nationalism and internationalism and while many of the essays focus on paintings, sculpture, prints and watercolours, others consider a wider notion of visual culture by investigating photography, magic lantern slides and the home arts of embroidery and textiles.
