Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dr. Channing's Note-Book: Passages From the Unpublished Manuscripts of William Ellery Channing In adding this little volume to the published works of William Ellery Channing, a special interest is claimed for it from its origin and character. The "Notes" are from the unpublished manuscripts left by him and set apart for this purpose by his nephew and biographer, William Henry Channing, and by his son. They have been gathered with careful study, and are here reproduced, without change or revision of any kind. Many of them bear internal evidence of this in their abrupt construction. So far has the desire to preserve their integrity been carried that it is only justice to the publishers to exonerate them from all responsibility for incomplete sentences or idiomatic use of words. What is possibly lost in elegance is more than compensated in vigor and freedom of expression. Written for personal and immediate reference, the papers have the absolute unrestraint of self-communion; yet we feel that in giving them to the world no injustice is done to the writer. He loses nothing through this nearer acquaintance. It was Dr. Channing's habit to make notes at all times, to jot down the train of thought suggested by the books he was reading, as well as his own solitary musings. Book Mary Somerville and the Cultivation of Science 1815 1840

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the myriad of changes that took place in Great Britain in the first half of the nineteenth century, many of particular significance to the historian of science and to the social historian are discernible in that small segment of British society drawn together by a shared interest in natural phenomena and with sufficient leisure or opportunity to investigate and ponder them. This group, which never numbered more than a mere handful in comparison to the whole population, may rightly be characterized as 'scientific'. They and their successors came to occupy an increasingly important place in the intellectual, educational, and developing economic life of the nation. Well before the arrival of mid-century, natural philosophers and inventors were generally hailed as a source of national pride and of national prestige. Scientific society is a feature of nineteenth-century British life, the best being found in London, in the universities, in Edinburgh and Glasgow, and in a few scattered provincial centres.

Book Religion and Politics in the Early Republic

Download or read book Religion and Politics in the Early Republic written by Daniel L. Dreisbach and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 1996-02-22 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The church-state debate currently alive in our courts and legislatures is strikingly similar to that of the 1830s. A secular drift in American culture and the role of religion in a pluralistic society were concerns that dominated the controversy then, as now. In Religion and Politics in the Early Republic, Daniel L. Dreisbach compellingly argues that the issues in our current debate were framed in earlier centuries by documents crucial to an understanding of church-state relations, the First Amendment, and our present concern with the constitutional role of religion in American public life. Reflection on this national discussion of more than 150 years ago casts light on both past and future relations between church and state in America. In an 1833 sermon, "The Relation of Christianity to Civil Government in the United States," the Reverend Jasper Adams of Charleston, South Carolina, an eminent educator and moral philosopher, offered valuable insight into the social and political forces that shaped church-state relations in his time. Adams argued that the Christian religion is indis-pensable to social order and national prosperity. Although he opposed the establishment of a state church, he believed that a Christian ethic should inform all civil, legal, and political institutions. Adams's remarkably prescient discourse anticipated the emergence of a dominant secular culture and its inevitable conflict with the formerly ascendant religious establishment. His treatise was the first major work from the embattled religious traditionalists controverting Thomas Jefferson's vision of a secular polity and strict church-state separation. Eager to confirm his analysis, Adams sent copies of the sermon to scores of leading intellectuals and public figures of his day. In this volume, Dreisbach brings together for the first time Adams's sermon, a critical review of the treatise, and transcripts of previously unpublished letters written in response to it by James Madison, John Marshall, Joseph Story, and J.S. Richardson. These letters provide a rare glimpse into the minds of several influential statesmen and jurists who were central in shaping the republic and its institutions. The Story and Madison letters are among their authors1 final and most perceptive pronouncements on church-state relations. The documents that Dreisbach has assembled in this edition provide a vivid portrait of early nineteenth-century thought on the constitutional role of religion in public life. Our ongoing national discussion of this topic is illuminated by the debate encapsulated in these pages.

Book A Manual of American Literature

Download or read book A Manual of American Literature written by Theodore Stanton and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1909 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been prepared for publication as No. 4000, a "Memorial Volume," of the "Tauchnitz Edition." Perhaps it may be well to explain to American readers what the "Tauchnitz Edition" is and what a "Memorial Volume" is in this collection. The "Collection of British Authors," or, as it is more popularly known on the European Continent, the "Tauchnitz Edition," was instituted in 1841, at Leipsic, by one of the most distinguished of German publishers, the late Baron Bernhard Tauchnitz, whose son is now at the head of the house. The father records that he was "incited to the undertaking by the high opinion and enthusiastic fondness which I have ever entertained for English literature: a literature springing from the selfsame root as the literature of Germany, and cultivated in the beginning by the same Saxon race.... As a German-Saxon it gave me particular pleasure to promote the literary interest of my Anglo-Saxon cousins, by rendering English literature as universally known as possible beyond the limits of the British Empire." In another place, Baron Tauchnitz describes "the mission" of his Collection to be the "spreading and strengthening the love for English literature outside of England and her Colonies."
