Book City of Boston Park Department Special Report 1925 Classic Reprint

Download or read book City of Boston Park Department Special Report 1925 Classic Reprint written by City of Boston Park Department and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from City of Boston Park Department Special Report, 1925 Though this system may be complete today, it cannot remain so in the future with out the constant acquisition Of new park and playground areas or the improvement of Old areas. The constant growth of the City makes this growth of the System necessary. This is not a theory upon which the City might be urged to act, but it is a fact upon which the City is Constantly acting, and with special energy at the present day. There never was a time when new playgrounds were being more rapidly acquired and Old playgrounds more generally enlarged and improved in their facilities than at the-present time. The parks of Boston are rendered still more perfect as a System and more useful individually through their relation to the Outer ring of Metropolitan Parks and parkways which were developed after the Boston Parks were established. Each system is becoming yearly more essential to the other. The map of the Boston and the Metropolitan Parks (plate II) shows the position and size of each, of these groups of parks. The map also indicates the location of the small local parks Of the surrounding cities and towns of the district. The question at once arises, have these recreative facilities-reached a point Of development in which one group is duplicating the work Of other groups? A general examination of the actual use made of these parks on Sundays and holidays, as well as on week days, indicates that they are all in intensive use. Many Of them, like the bathing beaches and the ball-field areas, are unable to accommodate the throngs which seek'them. There are no idle parks or playgrounds. In the winter season, it is true, greater use-might be made Of the wooded reservations and the larger country parks by snow-shoers, trampers and nature study parties. This is. A problem of education. In the summer season, however, the call to the parks is natural and constant. The present need is to bring the parks nearer to the homes by creating more recreation areas in the residence districts. The doorsteps and the streets will continue always to serve as play spaces on certain days, at certain hours, and at certain periods in childhood and in Old age, but the play ground and the park will be a public necessity always. Book Public Benefits Classic Reprint

Download or read book Public Benefits Classic Reprint written by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Benefits The Midtown Cultural District (MCD) Zoning is a blueprint for growth in downtown Boston. The Boston Redevelopment Authority has worked with many civic and neighborhood groups and individuals to develop urban design guidelines, uses, and amenities for the area that "ensure that future growth in Midtown Boston is managed in a way that protects the area's resources." The zoning for the Midtown Cultural District also ensures the: creation of cultural facilities construction of child care facilities preservation of historic buildings protection of public open space improvement of the local transportation system creation of neighborhood business opportunities construction of affordable housing and availability of new job training programs In order to meet the objectives of the MCD Zoning, the Commonwealth Center team has conducted a rigorous design and program review over the past year. Since the beginning of the review process, the height, density, and mass of the project were reduced, the setback along Washington Street was increased, the existing streetwalls were maintained, through-block walkway connections were created, the historic context of the area was reinforced. Potential project wind and shadow impacts have been greatly decreased by reductions in the overall massing. The result of the design review is a project that respects historic structures and public open space. Commonwealth Center will be one of the first major real estate development projects in the new Midtown Cultural District. Book Where Can I Get a Car

Download or read book Where Can I Get a Car written by T. W. Preston and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Where Can I Get a Car?: A Street Car Directory of the City of Boston The oft-asked question, where can I get a car for this or that place or point, not only by the stranger or visitor from out of town, but residents, business men and natives of the City of Boston, has never been satisfactorily answered, and until now they were in doubt whether the car they want is to be had on Scollay Square, Rowe's Wharf, or Boylston Street, frequently being obliged to hire a herdic, or pay two fares, where one would do if properly informed, besides the delay and vexatious loss of time. My book, "Where to Go - How to Get There," (now considered the banner Guide-Book of Boston and surroundings), which has given such unbounded satisfaction, is intended as a path-finder for visitors and pleasure seekers. In this work I intend, in brief form, and more extended in usefulness, a hand-book that will help the business men and general public to unravel the complicated street-car system of Boston and surrounding cities and towns. As changes and extensions are made I will be prepared in each succeeding edition to map out, and explain in complete detail, the network of electric railroads that are fast spreading over and through our cities, towns and outlying country, which afford pleasure, convenience and cheapness of travel to the masses, in the form of the poor mans carriage. While soliciting a generous patronage, I also invite honest criticism from the press and public, hoping to merit your favors. Book Parking and the City

Download or read book Parking and the City written by Donald Shoup and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-11 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donald Shoup brilliantly overcame the challenge of writing about parking without being boring in his iconoclastic 800-page book The High Cost of Free Parking. Easy to read and often entertaining, the book showed that city parking policies subsidize cars, encourage sprawl, degrade urban design, prohibit walkability, damage the economy, raise housing costs, and penalize people who cannot afford or choose not to own a car. Using careful analysis and creative thinking, Shoup recommended three parking reforms: (1) remove off-street parking requirements, (2) charge the right prices for on-street parking, and (3) spend the meter revenue to improve public services on the metered streets. Parking and the City reports on the progress that cities have made in adopting these three reforms. The successful outcomes provide convincing evidence that Shoup’s policy proposals are not theoretical and idealistic but instead are practical and realistic. The good news about our decades of bad planning for parking is that the damage we have done will be far cheaper to repair than to ignore. The 51 chapters by 46 authors in Parking and the City show how reforming our misguided and wrongheaded parking policies can do a world of good. Book The Image of the City

Download or read book The Image of the City written by Kevin Lynch and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1964-06-15 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic work on the evaluation of city form. What does the city's form actually mean to the people who live there? What can the city planner do to make the city's image more vivid and memorable to the city dweller? To answer these questions, Mr. Lynch, supported by studies of Los Angeles, Boston, and Jersey City, formulates a new criterion—imageability—and shows its potential value as a guide for the building and rebuilding of cities. The wide scope of this study leads to an original and vital method for the evaluation of city form. The architect, the planner, and certainly the city dweller will all want to read this book.
