Book Newspaper Building Design and Journalism Cultures in Australia and the UK 1855 2010

Download or read book Newspaper Building Design and Journalism Cultures in Australia and the UK 1855 2010 written by Carole O'Reilly and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the micro-cultural ideologies of the journalism profession in Britain and Australia by focusing on the design, execution and development of newspaper building architecture. Concentrating on the main newspaper buildings in some of the major metropolitan areas in Australia (Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide) and the UK (Manchester, London, Edinburgh and Liverpool) from 1855 to 2010, Newspaper Building Design and Journalism Cultures in Australia and the UK: 1855–2010 interweaves a rich analysis of spatial characteristics of newspaper offices with compelling anecdotes from journalists’ working lives, to examine the history, evolution and precarious future of the physical newsroom and the surrounding interior and exterior space. The book argues that newspaper buildings are designed to accommodate and extend journalism’s professional values and belief systems over time and that their architecture reflects ideological change and continuity in these value and belief systems, such as the evolution from trade to profession. Ancillary factors, such as the influence of the newspapers’ owners on the building design and the financing of new structures are also considered. As professional practice rapidly shifts out of the newspaper offices, this insightful study questions what this may mean for the future of the industry. Newspaper Building Design and Journalism Cultures in Australia and the UK: 1855–2010 will benefit academics and researchers in the areas of media, journalism, cultural studies and urban history.

Download or read book Queens of Print written by Rebecca Johinke and published by Australian Scholarly Publishing. This book was released on 2019-11-08 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For fifty years our most powerful popular culture influencers have been the high-powered editors of mass-market women’s magazines like The Australian Women’s Weekly, Woman’s Day, New Idea and the now defunct Dolly, Cleo and Cosmopolitan. It is difficult to overstate the influence that these women have had in shaping popular ideas and attitudes, feminism, and femininity in Australia via the pages of their magazines. In these interviews, they describe their lives and careers in a medium that is part of our publishing heritage. Queens of Print is a tribute to the most influential and iconic women in Australian women’s magazines. It is a snapshot of a rapidly changing industry where print is supposedly dead, and media have been disrupted. This book looks back, but also forward to consider what a magazine might be and what a magazine editor might do in future decades.

Book Australia Under Construction

Download or read book Australia Under Construction written by John Butcher and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2008-04-01 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Australian nation is a work in progress. So conclude the authors whose views are represented in this most recent offering in the ANZSOG monograph series, AUSTRALIA UNDER CONSTRUCTION: NATION-BUILDING PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE. From its beginnings as a settler society through to present day concerns about 'broadbanding the nation', the nation-building narrative has resonated with Australians. The very idea of nation-building has both excited the popular imagination about what we might achieve as a society and a nation, and has occasioned despair about missed opportunities. The eleven authors contributing to this monograph reflect on these, and other themes from a variety of perspectives. They challenge our understanding of the term 'nation-building', reflect on its contemporary relevance as a framework for public policy and even re-appraise the contribution of past 'iconic' nation-building endeavours. To this subject the authors bring intelligence, wit and a healthy disdain for sacred cows. A stimulating read for anyone interested in the history, challenges and prospects of nation-building in Australia.

Book Australian Genre Film

Download or read book Australian Genre Film written by Kelly McWilliam and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-04-26 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australian Genre Film interrogates key genres at the core of Australia’s so-called new golden age of genre cinema, establishing the foundation on which more sustained research on film genre in Australian cinema can develop. The book examines what characterises Australian cinema and its output in this new golden age, as contributors ask to what extent Australian genre film draws on widely understood (and largely Hollywood-based) conventions, as compared to culturally specific conventions of genre storytelling. As such, this book offers a comprehensive and up-to-date survey of Australian genre film, undertaken through original analyses of 13 significant Australian genres: action, biopics, comedy, crime, horror, musical, road movie, romance, science fiction, teen, thriller, war, and the Western. This book will be a cornerstone work for the burgeoning field of Australian film genre studies and a must-read for academics; researchers; undergraduate students; postgraduate students; and general readers interested in film studies, media studies, cultural studies, Australian studies, and sociology.
