Book Downhole Drilling Motors

Download or read book Downhole Drilling Motors written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dyna-Drills and turbodrills are used primarily for directional drilling where it is critical that the drillpipe not be rotated. These tools are not widely used for straight-hole drilling because of problems with bearing failures, low power outputs, low bit pressures, and high rotary speeds. The high rotary speeds produce bit bearing failures in 10 to 15 h, compared to 100 to 200 h life at lower rotary speeds. The technology now exists to develop reliable high-torque motors which will operate roller bits at speeds of 150 to 250 RPM and diamond bits at speeds of 400 to 800 RPM for periods of 100 to 200 hours. Sealed bearing assemblies which allow the bearings to operate in lubricant are being developed. These improved bearings allow bits to operate at the high bit weights needed for optimum drilling. Improved drilling motors can reduce drilling costs to significantly increase the number of wells drilled per drilling rig per year. Now, this is increasingly important because of the drilling rig shortage developing in this country. At least ten companies are working on the development of improved drilling motors and it is likely that several of these new motors will become commercially available within the next 2 to 3 years. Several companies are working on the development of improved high speed roller bits for use on drilling motors. The development of these high speed bits should significantly increase the use of drilling motors since bit bearing failures are a major problem when drilling with motors. The development of reliable, high-speed STRATAPAX bits should also increase motor useage since these bits drilling most effectively at rotary speeds of 300 to 500 RPM.

Book Technology of Oil and Gas Wells Drilling by Downhole Drilling Motors

Download or read book Technology of Oil and Gas Wells Drilling by Downhole Drilling Motors written by Mikhail Dvoynikov and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about devices that control, create and regulate weight on bit and methods of operational (automatic) control over drilling using downhole motor as a drillbit drive in the book. It concludes survey results analysis of equipment and technologies that focused on drilling optimization and automatization of directional and horizontal wells deepening. The drill string operation while combination drilling was highlighted briefly. The book represents methods and technique and also results of experimental actual weight on bit evaluation and recommends how to carry out an operational control of axial weight on bit. Also there is an analysis of patent pool in sphere of motor working elements improving. It defines the main engineering directions that increase energy characteristic values of hydraulic motors; provide reliability assurance and consistency of their operation in complicated geological and technical conditions. On the basis of recognized directions the authors present the engineering solutions, the results of these solutions survey and experimental-industrial implementation.

Book Program to Develop Improved Downhole Drilling Motors Final Report

Download or read book Program to Develop Improved Downhole Drilling Motors Final Report written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant progress was made during Phase I of the program toward finding solutions to the seal-and-bearing problems. A seal-test facility was designed and built to test full-scale seals for downhole motors. The tests will simulate closely the environment imposed on seals used in actual motor drilling. Many seal designs and concepts were considered, including novel designs and modifications to conventional seal types. Several of the most promising designs (including some novel designs) have been designated for testing in Phase II. Some of these seals have already been obtained and are available for testing. The preliminary design for a seal-bearing package test stand was completed. This facility will allow tests of full-size seal-bearing packs at simulated downhole conditions. The design of a new seal-bearing package was completed and is scheduled for full-scale testing in Phase II. This package will allow worn seals and bearings to be replaced easily. New thrust bearings were selected for application in the seal-bearing package. These bearings offer much greater load capacity and should increase bearing life significantly. (JGB).

Book Program for the Improvement of Downhole Drilling Motors

Download or read book Program for the Improvement of Downhole Drilling Motors written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the work done under contract to Sandia National Labs and to the Department of Energy for improvement of downhole drilling motors. The focus of this program was the development of a better bearing-and-seal assembly that could be used in different kinds of drilling motors in a geothermal environment. Major tasks were: (1) design and construction of seal testing devices, (2) screening and evaluation of candidate seals in a simulated bearing/seal package, (3) tests of the most promising candidates in a full-scale bearing/seal package, and (4) analysis of failed seals after testing. The key results from this program were: (1) identification of seal/shaft/lubricant systems that performed well at high pressure and temperature, (2) identification of other seal designs that should be avoided for similar applications, and (3) evaluation of the test machines' design.
