Book excerpt: Reduced to holding down the bottom in a lukewarm nostalgia band, the thrill is gone for old-school bass player Jude Barnes. What's more, his materially challenged wife, Rachel, wants more out of life than Jude's enough-to-get-by income has provided over the years. She conspires with their annoying eleven-year-old son, Miles, and her eccentric father-in-law to force Jude into a life of middle-class respectability. A solution presents itself when caustic college buddy, Donny, fast-talks Jude into working the sell-side of the burgeoning tech-stock bubble. But just as it appears that Rachel has succeeded in transforming Jude into a responsible adult, a mysterious and obstinate diva named Nefertiti arrives on the scene, threatening to unravel Rachel's plans by tempting Jude into one last fateful dance with his elusive muse.

Book excerpt: Despite several decades of scholarship on African diasporic religion, Voodoo remains underexamined, and the few books published on the topic contain inaccuracies and outmoded arguments. In Voodoo: An African American Religion, Jeffrey E. Anderson presents a much-needed modern account of the faith as it existed in the Mississippi River valley from colonial times to the mid-twentieth century, when, he argues, it ceased to thrive as a living tradition. Anderson provides a solid scholarly foundation for future work by systematizing the extant information on a religion that has long captured the popular imagination as it has simultaneously engendered fear and ridicule. His book stands as the most complete study of the faith yet produced and rests on more than two decades of research, utilizing primary source material alongside the author’s own field studies in New Orleans, Haiti, Cuba, Senegal, Benin, Togo, and the Republic of Congo. The result serves as an enduring resource on Mississippi River valley Voodoo, Louisiana, and the greater African Diaspora.

Book French on Shifting Ground

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nathalie Dajko
  • Publisher : Univ. Press of Mississippi
  • Release : 2020-11-24
  • ISBN : 1496830946
  • Pages : 133 pages

Download or read book French on Shifting Ground written by Nathalie Dajko and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2020-11-24 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In French on Shifting Ground: Cultural and Coastal Erosion in South Louisiana, Nathalie Dajko introduces readers to the lower Lafourche Basin, Louisiana, where the land, a language, and a way of life are at risk due to climate change, environmental disaster, and coastal erosion. Louisiana French is endangered all around the state, but in the lower Lafourche Basin the shift to English is accompanied by the equally rapid disappearance of the land on which its speakers live. French on Shifting Ground allows both scholars and the general public to get an overview of how rich and diverse the French language in Louisiana is, and serves as a key reminder that Louisiana serves as a prime repository for Native and heritage languages, ranking among the strongest preservation regions in the southern and eastern US. Nathalie Dajko outlines the development of French in the region, highlighting the features that make it unique in the world and including the first published comparison of the way it is spoken by the local American Indian and Cajun populations. She then weaves together evidence from multiple lines of linguistic research, years of extensive participant observation, and personal narratives from the residents themselves to illustrate the ways in which language—in this case French—is as fundamental to the creation of place as is the physical landscape. It is a story at once scholarly and personal: the loss of the land and the concomitant loss of the language have implications for the academic community as well as for the people whose cultures—and identities—are literally at stake.
