Book excerpt: Bronwyn Trotters ‘Cedar Creek’ – Book Two of The Trappers Promise trilogy, continues the intriguing story of Sarah Cole: A trapper, born and raised in the wilds of the Rockies. Winter has arrived with a vengeance! The trappers have left the mountain to get paid for their skins so they can get supplies to see them through next year’s trapping, but Sarah hates Cedar Creek. The day she and her son Thomas ride in, she clashes with new sheriff Christian Morgan, a man with a past he is trying hard to keep buried, and they become embroiled in a stormy relationship. Setting up camp on the riverbank below town just like she has done every winter for the past twelve years suits Sarah just fine. But Christian wants to make love to Sarah in a warm bed rather than outside in the cold, after all, he has the bottom floor of Mountain View Lodge all to himself. Christian however, doesn’t know Sarah once owned the lodge - because no-one will tell him anything about her. Convinced Benjamin Crawley murdered her father so he could take ownership of the lodge, Sarah is adamant she will never step foot inside that house - ever again. For the trappers who have promised to look out for Sarah, trouble is always close by. How can simple vermin like river rats, get Sarah in trouble with the law?

Book excerpt: From acclaimed short fiction writer Nisi Shawl comes a brilliant alternate history set in the Congo, where heroes strive for a Utopia and endeavor to live together despite their differences. Now with a foreward from award-winning author Cadwell Turnbull. In this re-imagining of Belgium's disastrous colonization of the Congo, African American missionaries join forces with British socialists to purchase land from the Congo Free State's "owner," King Leopold II. This land, which they name Everfair, is set aside as a safe haven for native populations of the Congo as well as settlers from around the world, including dream-eyed Europeans attempting to create a better society, formerly enslaved people returning from America, and Chinese railroad builders escaping hard labor. Using the combined knowledge of four continents, Everfair becomes a land of spying cats and gulls, nuclear dirigibles buoyed by barkcloth balloons, and silent pistols that shoot poison knives. With this technology, Everfair will attempt to defeat the Belgian tyrant Leopold II. But even if they can defeat their great enemy, a looming world war and political infighting may threaten to destroy everything they have built. “A book with gorgeous sweep, spanning years and continents, loves and hates, histories and fantasies... Everfair is sometimes sad, often luminous, and always original. A wonderful achievement.” — Karen Joy Fowler At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Book excerpt: Derrick entered the door with a big grin. He was wearing a Mickey Mouse pullover shirt that stopped at his knees. His surfer shorts stopped at about his ankles, and he looked even more outlandish with his low-cut blue sneakers and blue and green sweat socks. My first reaction was to send him back to change his clothes. After further thought, I decided to give him a lecture and let him be his individual self. Again, George rapidly hit the door leading the players down the hall with his usual, "Lets do this fella's!" The bus loaded up with Colleen handing me a Hall's cough drop as I sat down. The cheerleader advisor knew I had been losing my voice due to yelling so much. Dave handed me an antacid tablet for later, and Lee's wife jumped on the bus to hand the players carrots. All the rituals had been completed, and the big bus moved out for the 55 mile trip to Pittsburgh. The time that I had always wanted to experience as a kid, was finally at hand. It was a chance to coach at the University of Pittsburgh floor. It was a chance to win a gold medal. The most important thing though, I thought, was for a lot of people to change their attitude's about delinquent kids. I wanted people to know that these kids were not all bad if you gave them a chance, and many would and could succeed. As the bus lurched down Interstate-79, I thought, that no matter what, win or lose----these kids had already succeeded.
