Book African American Culture

Download or read book African American Culture written by Omari L. Dyson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2020-07-23 with total page 1081 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering everything from sports to art, religion, music, and entrepreneurship, this book documents the vast array of African American cultural expressions and discusses their impact on the culture of the United States. According to the latest census data, less than 13 percent of the U.S. population identifies as African American; African Americans are still very much a minority group. Yet African American cultural expression and strong influences from African American culture are common across mainstream American culture—in music, the arts, and entertainment; in education and religion; in sports; and in politics and business. African American Culture: An Encyclopedia of People, Traditions, and Customs covers virtually every aspect of African American cultural expression, addressing subject matter that ranges from how African culture was preserved during slavery hundreds of years ago to the richness and complexity of African American culture in the post-Obama era. The most comprehensive reference work on African American culture to date, the multivolume set covers such topics as black contributions to literature and the arts, music and entertainment, religion, and professional sports. It also provides coverage of less-commonly addressed subjects, such as African American fashion practices and beauty culture, the development of jazz music across different eras, and African American business.

Download or read book To Be Continued written by Robert C. Allen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-04 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To Be Continued... explores the world's most popular form of television drama; the soap opera. From Denver to Delhi, Moscow to Manchester, audiences eagerly await the next episode of As the World Turns, The Rich Also Weep or Eastenders. But the popularity of soap operas in Britain and the US pales in comparison to the role that they play in media cultures in other parts of the world. To Be Continued... investigates both the cultural specificity of television soap operas and their reception in other cultures, covering soap production and soap watching in the U.S., Asia, Europe, Australia and Latin America. The contributors consider the nature of soap as a media text, the history of the serial narrative as a form, and the role of the soap opera in the development of feminist media criticism. To Be Continued... presents the first scholarly examination of soap opera as global media phenomenon.

Book The Real South

Download or read book The Real South written by Scott Romine and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2008-06-01 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this stimulating study, Scott Romine explores the impact of globalization on contemporary southern culture and the South's persistence in an age of media and what he terms "cultural reproduction." Rather than being compromised, Romine asserts, southern cultures are both complicated and reconfigured as they increasingly detach from tradition in its conventional sense. In considering Souths that might appear fake -- the Souths of the theme restaurant, commercial television, and popular regional magazines, for example -- Romine contends that authenticity and reality emerge as central concepts that allow groups and individuals to imagine and navigate social worlds. Romine addresses a major critical problem -- "authenticity" -- in a fundamentally new manner. Less concerned with what actually constitutes an "authentic" or "real" South than in how these concepts are used today, The Real South explores a wide range of southern narratives that describe and travel through virtual, simulated, and commodified Souths. Where earlier critics have tended to assume a real or authentic South, Romine questions such assumptions and whether the "authentic South" ever truly existed. From Gone with the Wind, Civil War reenactments, and a tennis community outside Atlanta called Tara, to the work of Josephine Humphreys, the travel narrative of V. S. Naipaul, and the historical fiction of Lewis Nordan, Romine examines how narratives (and spaces) are used to fashion social solidarity and cultural continuity in a time of fragmentation and change. Far from deteriorating or disappearing in a global economy, Romine shows, the South continues to be reproduced and used by diverse groups engaged in diverse cultural projects.

Virginia Willis is not only an authority on Southern cooking. She's also a French-trained chef, a veteran cookbook author, and a proud Southerner who adores eating and cooking for family and friends. So when she needed to drop a few pounds and generally lighten up her diet, the most important criterion for her new lifestyle was that all the food had to taste delicious. The result is Lighten Up, Y’all, a soul-satisfying and deeply personal collection of Virginia’s new favorite recipes. All the classics are covered—from a comforting Southern Style Shepherd’s Pie with Grits to warm, melting Broccoli Mac and Cheese to Old-Fashioned Buttermilk Pie. Book Secrets My Mother Never Told Me

Download or read book Secrets My Mother Never Told Me written by Barb Cross and published by Get You Visible. This book was released on 2021-05-12 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you finding that every day is exactly the same, never getting any better? Are you making the same choices over and over again? Is the outcome ever different? I wrote this book in my mind a million times before I committed it to paper. I wrote this to help you find a way forward, out of the repetition that’s holding you back. Stories can help guide us through life’s many confusions. True stories can help us to realize that someone has done this successfully before; that we are not alone. The story of Loraine begins shortly after World War II, yet it continues to resonate in the face of today’s challenges. Through her story, I hope to empower a new generation to seize their own potential rather than see themselves as a product of their limitations; as victims of circumstance. Through courage and commitment, you can be the beacon the world needs to shine brightly in a period of continuous change. You can challenge yourself to be the best version of you and inspire others to embrace their true potential. You can be an example of a life well lived rather than a bystander waiting for the next disaster. This story will provide the inspiration to realize you can succeed and feel accomplishment in your efforts. Please, join me on this journey.
