Book excerpt: Myra Oliver was twenty-two when she decided she wanted freedom from debt and consumerism. She designed a plan, made changes, and reinvented herself. By thirty-three, not only was she debt-free, she built a rental portfolio that provided her with passive income to quit her job and find financial independence. We live in a consumer-driven culture that prioritizes expensive things over quality of life. We buy houses we'll never own, cars we can't afford, and stuff we don't need. Debt is robbing us of a life worth living and forcing us to stay at jobs we don't like. We're trading our time for money-and not making our money work for us. In Down Home Money, Myra shows you that financial freedom is not about how much money you make, but what you do with it. She'll take you on an empowering journey to reclaim your life and change your future. Buckle up!

Book excerpt: “Haunting . . . To read The Good Negress is to fall under a spell, to open a window, to fly.” —Los Angeles Times Book Review Twenty years after its initial publication, The Good Negress continues to be an important part of the literary canon, as relevant and necessary as ever. Set in 1960s Detroit, the novel centers around Denise Palms, who leaves her grandmother’s home in rural Virginia to reunite with her mother, stepfather, and older brothers. As a black teenage girl, Denise is given scarce opportunity beyond cooking, cleaning, and raising her mother’s baby. But an idealistic, demanding teacher opens Denise’s eyes to a future she has never considered, and soon she begins to question the limits of the life prescribed to her. With lyrical, evocative prose, A. J. Verdelle captures Denise’s journey from adolescence to womanhood as she navigates the tension between loyalty and independence, and between circumstance and desire. The Good Negress is an unforgettable debut—simultaneously the portrait of a family and a glimpse into an era of twentieth-century America. Winner of the Harold D. Vursell Memorial Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters Finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction

Book Downhome Gospel

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jerrilyn McGregory
  • Publisher : Univ. Press of Mississippi
  • Release : 2010-10-05
  • ISBN : 162846836X
  • Pages : 330 pages

Download or read book Downhome Gospel written by Jerrilyn McGregory and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2010-10-05 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jerrilyn McGregory explores sacred music and spiritual activism in a little-known region of the South, the Wiregrass Country of Georgia, Alabama, and North Florida. She examines African American sacred music outside of Sunday church-related activities, showing that singing conventions and anniversary programs fortify spiritual as well as social needs. In this region African Americans maintain a social world of their own creation. Their cultural performances embrace some of the most pervasive forms of African American sacred music—spirituals, common meter, Sacred Harp, shape-note, traditional, and contemporary gospel. Moreover, the contexts in which they sing include present-day observations such as the Twentieth of May (Emancipation Day), Burial League Turnouts, and Fifth Sunday. Rather than tracing the evolution of African American sacred music, this ethnographic study focuses on contemporary cultural performances, almost all by women, which embrace all forms. These women promote a female-centered theology to ensure the survival of their communities and personal networks. They function in leadership roles that withstand the test of time. Their spiritual activism presents itself as a way of life. In Wiregrass Country, “You don't have to sing like an angel” is a frequently expressed sentiment. To these women, “good” music is God's music regardless of the manner delivered. Therefore, Downhome Gospel presents gospel music as being more than a transcendent sound. It is local spiritual activism that is writ large. Gospel means joy, hope, expectation, and the good news that makes the soul glad.
