Book excerpt: Excerpt from Narrative History: A History of Dover, Massachusetts, as a Precinct, Parish, District, and Town The writing of this history has been a labor of love. It had its origin in the desire to do something for the place of one's birth. Since history records the life of the people, it is easily seen that nothing can be of more value or of more abiding interest than the story of the labors, the fortitude, the privations, the heroism, the patriotism, and the loves of the fathers. In the evolution of the town, in the establishment of its institutions, in the life of its men and women, we have an abiding example worthy of all emulation. It emphasizes the truth that men must bear one another's hardships and burdens, and that there is nothing lasting that is not founded on honor, virtue, duty, and purity. The author is under obligations to the many friends who have rendered him assistance in this work, and it is with sadness that he recalls the interest of those who now sleep with the fathers. A second volume will follow, giving not only the genealogy of present families, but also all residents previous to 1840, since which time complete records have been kept by the Commonwealth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Genealogical History of Dover, Massachusetts: Tracing All Families Previous to 1850, and Many Families That Have Lived in the Town Since With an Account of the Habits and Customs of the People It has been a pleasure to write the genealogy of Dover families, to make this contribution of human history, because the inhabitants have been to an unusual degree a broad-minded, patriotic people, free from the provincialisms of towns less favorably situated. From its first settlement the life of this community has been effected by the city only thirteen miles away. The town has felt the effects of the printing press and the railroad, two great civilizing agencies. Dover has had from the first an educated ministry, good schools, early library facilities and abundant roads. It is a self-evident fact that where a community exists sufficient unto itself and with no contact with the outside world there humanity sours, grows morbid and wrong. By its location Dover has at least been saved from this condition. Here has been exhibited the virtues of patriotism - "economy, industry, simplicity, frugality, humility and reverence," all of which is best appreciated by those whose family tree has taken deep root in this soil. It would have been a pleasure to have included in this genealogical history other families who have made Dover their place of residence in recent years, but persistent effort failed to gain the necessary data. Acknowledgement should here be made of the substantial gifts that have been received from those who have evidently regarded it as an opportunity to contribute the illustrations which appear in this volume. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Home Day: Proceedings of the One Hundred and Twenty-Fifth Anniversary of the Incorporation of the Town of Dover, Massachusetts, Wednesday, July 7, 1909 An appropriation of three hundred dollars was made to meet the necessary expenses. A joint committee of the town and the Dover Historical Society arranged for the celebration and carried out an interesting programme, the entire expense of which was kept within the appropriation. A more perfect summer day for the celebration could not have been desired, fair skies and gentle breezes prevailed. It was estimated that at least a thousand persons were in attendance during the day. All public buildings and private residences in the center of the town were tastefully adorned. The interior of the meeting house was beautifully decorated with crimson ramblers and horse brier, while the town hall was dressed in our national colors. An arch was erected over the central path lead ing across the Common, which bore a Welcome for all. Derby's Natick Band discoursed appropriate music throughout the day, from a band stand, which had been erected on the Common. Able committees on invitations, reception, literary and musical exercises, decorations, badges, refreshments, sports and finance, attended to every detail of the celebration. Book excerpt: Originally part of the Dedham Grant of 1635, Dover, Massachusetts, became Dedham's Fourth Precinct in 1729 and the Springfield Parish of Dedham in 1748. When the Commonwealth incorporated it in 1836, Dover's economy was based on farming and grazing. Several companies, including the E.F. Hodgson Company and the Harvard Apparatus Company, successfully manufactured portable houses and medical instruments in Dover. However, they eventually left, as Dover remained agriculturally based. By 1896, Dover had become a suburban community. From 1900 to 1914, wealthy Bostonians--many of them members of the Norfolk Hunt Club--built at least eighteen spacious country estates in Dover, far from the noise and hubbub of the city. Population grew slowly after World War I, but in 1945, the town increased in numbers, as veterans returned from World War II and others saw the convenience of commuting to work in Boston while living in a pastoral environment. Once the home of Sen. Leverett Saltonstall, Gov. Francis Sargent, and benefactress Amelia Peabody, Dover today is an elegant country town, a mixture of estates, open fields, forests, and family neighborhoods.
