Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The neighborhoods of Douglaston and Little Neck are located on the northeastern frontier of Queens County. The gateway to the north shore of Long Island, both towns are linked not only geographically but through an illustrious history that dates back to the time of the Algonquin, who called the area Matinecock or Place of the Hill Country. In 1906, the Rickert-Finlay Realty Company helped develop Douglaston and Little Neck, featuring an architectural tapestry of Colonial and Tudor Revivals, English cottages, and Arts and Crafts-style homes. Douglaston quickly became a destination for artists and yachting enthusiasts while Little Neck quickly saw its conversion from farmland and quaint yet rustic country stores to a newly developed area of communities and hamlets that exemplified the American dream. Today an historic district, Douglaston includes homes designed by Josephine Wright Chapman, one of the nation's earliest women architects, as well as the childhood home of pro tennis legend John McEnroe.

Book Sunnyside Gardens

Download or read book Sunnyside Gardens written by Jeffrey A. Kroessler and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book devoted to this landmark of architecture, urban planning, and social engineering Situated in the borough of Queens, New York, Sunnyside Gardens has been an icon of urbanism and planning since its inception in the 1920s. Not the most beautifully planned community, nor the most elegant, and certainly not the most perfectly preserved, Sunnyside Gardens nevertheless endures as significant both in terms of the planning principles that inspired its creators and in its subsequent history. Why this garden suburb was built and how it has fared over its first century is at the heart of Sunnyside Gardens. Reform-minded architects and planners in England and the United States knew too well the social and environmental ills of the cities around them at the turn of the twentieth century. Garden cities gained traction across the Atlantic before the Great War, and its principles were modified by American pragmatism to fit societal conditions and applied almost as a matter of faith by urban planners for much of the twentieth century. The designers of Sunnyside— Clarence Stein, Henry Wright, Frederick Ackerman, and landscape architect Marjorie Cautley—crafted a residential community intended to foster a sense of community among residents. Richly illustrated throughout with historic and contemporary photographs as well as architectural plans of the houses, blocks, and courts, Sunnyside Gardens first explores the planning of Sunnyside, beginning with the English garden-city movement and its earliest incarnations built around London. Chapters cover the planning and building of Sunnyside and its construction by the City Housing Corporation, the design of the homes and gardens, and the tragedy of the Great Depression, when hundreds of families lost their homes. The second section examine how the garden suburbs outside London have been preserved and how aesthetic regulation is enforced in New York. The history of the preservation of Sunnyside Gardens is discussed in depth, as is the controversial proposal to place the Aluminaire House, an innovative housing prototype from the 1930s, on the only vacant site in the historic district. Sunnyside Gardens pays homage to a time when far-sighted and socially conscious architects and planners sought to build communities, not merely buildings, a spirit that has faded to near-invisibility

Book Preserving New York

Download or read book Preserving New York written by Anthony Wood and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 603 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preserving New York is the largely unknown inspiring story of the origins of New York City’s nationally acclaimed landmarks law. The decades of struggle behind the law, its intellectual origins, the men and women who fought for it, the forces that shaped it, and the buildings lost and saved on the way to its ultimate passage, span from 1913 to 1965. Intended for the interested public as well as students of New York City history, architecture, and preservation itself, over 100 illustrations help reveal a history richer and more complex than the accepted myth that the landmarks law sprang from the wreckage of the great Pennsylvania Station. Images include those by noted historic photographers as well as those from newspaper accounts of the time. Forgotten civic leaders such as Albert S. Bard and lost buildings including the Brokaw Mansions, are unveiled in an extensively researched narrative bringing this essential episode in New York’s history to future generations tasked with protecting the city’s landmarks. For the first time, the story of how New York won the right to protect its treasured buildings, neighborhoods and special places is brought together to enjoy, inform, and inspire all who love New York.

Book excerpt: In rich, historic images, the unlikely story of Bayside and her founders comes to life. In 1824, a wealthy shipping merchant by the name of Abraham Bell purchased 245 acres in the area now known as Bayside. He created an upper and lower farm, bisected them with a country lane now called Bell Boulevard, and with this Bayside began to develop. Over the generations, Bayside evolved from its beginnings as a rural farming community to a resort destination with lavish estates that lined the shore of Little Neck Bay. Later the town was transformed again into a commuter suburb touted by real estate developers for its scenic beauty and convenient location. Bayside chronicles the community's ever-changing history through this collection of vintage photographs culled from the Bayside Historical Society's archives.
