When Chambers joined Cisco in 1991, it was a company with 400 employees, a single product, and about $70 million in revenue. When he stepped down as CEO in 2015, he left a $47 billion tech giant that was the backbone of the internet and a leader in areas from cybersecurity to data center convergence. Along the way, he had acquired 180 companies and turned more than 10,000 employees into millionaires. Widely recognized as an innovator, an industry leader, and one of the world's best CEOs, Chambers has outlasted and outmaneuvered practically every rival that ever tried to take Cisco on--Nortel, Lucent, Alcatel, IBM, Dell, and Hewlett-Packard, to name a few. Now Chambers is sharing his unique strategies for winning in a digital world. From his early lessons and struggles with dyslexia in West Virginia to his bold bets and battles with some of the biggest names in tech, Chambers gives readers a playbook on how to act before the market shifts, tap customers for strategy, partner for growth, build teams, and disrupt themselves. He also adapted those lessons to transform government, helping global leaders like French President Emmanuel Macron and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to create new models for growth. Download or read book Storytelling at Work written by Mitch Ditkoff and published by . This book was released on 2015-10-27 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Storytelling at Work is a groundbreaking book about the power of personal storytelling to spark insight, meaning, and innovation - especially in the modern day workplace where data and information have too often supplanted knowledge and wisdom. The author of the book, Mitch Ditkoff, has been an "innovation provocateur" to some of the world's most forward thinking organizations since 1987 and has come to realize that the single most effective way to jump start wisdom in the workplace is via the sharing of well told stories - first person "moments of truth" that have embedded within them the DNA of what it really takes to be a positive force for change, on or off the job. Part One of Storytelling at Work includes 37 of the author's own stories from the front lines of business, both as the Co-Founder of Idea Champions - a leading innovation consultancy - and earlier in his life, as a young entrepreneur trying to find his way in the world. The stories are entertaining, evocative, and mind opening. Each one is followed by a brief reflection - a simple way for readers to apply the message of the story to their own lives. Part Two of the book is a collection of 16 essays on the art and science of storytelling, a thought provoking exploration of why stories are such a powerful communication medium and how the reader can make best use of stories to have the most possible positive impact on others. "I truly LOVE this book Mitch Ditkoff has delivered a modern classic on how to communicate with wisdom. Kudos " --Rowan Gibson, author of The Four Lenses of Innovation "Storytelling at Work is filled with Eureka moments that will spark your creativity and ignite your motivation. Original and deeply insightful " --Marshall Goldsmith, author of Triggers, a New York Times and Wall Street Journal #1 bestseller "Mitch Ditkoff's powerfully written book shows us how storytelling, well done, humanizes the world of work and helps us tune into the deep well of timeless wisdom within." --Tim Gallwey, author of The Inner Game of Tennis

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As treasured recipes are passed down through generations we also pass down the stories of our elders. If we listen carefully we will understand the wisdom contained within each of them. These wisdoms are not fairytales but an effort of our elders to allow us to learn and grow from past encounters of our ancestors. Though some may seem a bit odd to us, elders don't memorize and pass down fairy tales. We should embrace our elders rich stories and try to understand how they impact us even today. Oral traditions of Native Americans and Aboriginal peoples bear witness to a grand plan and give us hope for the future. Winston Churchill, Wernher von Braun, Nikolai Tesla, and Carl Sagan, believed in the possibility of life in the universe. The Book of Enoch and other major religious texts speak of visitors from faraway worlds. Keep an open mind, continue to search and learn about your world ... do not automatically dismiss what is not average in your everyday life.

Download or read book The Earth the City and the Hidden Narrative of Race written by Carl Anthony and published by New Village Press. This book was released on 2017-10-10 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, Carl Anthony shares his perspectives as an African-American child in post-World War II Philadelphia; a student and civil rights activist in 1960s Harlem; a traveling student of West African architecture; and an architect, planner, and environmental justice advocate in Berkeley. He contextualizes this within American urbanism and human origins, making profoundly personal both African American and American urban histories as well as planetary origins and environmental issues, to not only bring a new worldview to people of color, but to set forth a truly inclusive vision of our shared planetary future. The Earth, the City, and the Hidden Narrative of Race connects the logics behind slavery, community disinvestment, and environmental exploitation to address the most pressing issues of our time in a cohesive and foundational manner. Most books dealing with these topics and periods silo issues apart from one another, but this book contextualizes the connections between social movements and issues, providing tremendous insight into successful movement building. Anthony's rich narrative describes both being at the mercy of racism, urban disinvestment, and environmental injustice as well as fighting against these forces with a variety of strategies. Because this work is both a personal memoir and an exposition of ideas, it will appeal to those who appreciate thoughtful and unique writing on issues of race, including individuals exploring their own African American identity, as well as progressive audiences of organizations and community leaders and professionals interested in democratizing power and advancing equitable policies for low-income communities and historically disenfranchised communities.

But I didn't realize how different her approach was until my father was diagnosed with cancer. His illness triggered some disturbing behavior that forced me to re-evaluate how I was brought up. Now, having raised my own children using my wife's method, I was seeing the results of living under a "not sparing the rod" path, compared to my wife's loving, mentoring style of child rearing. This is the true story on how I initially got it wrong, but was able to figure it out.

Download or read book Connecting the Dots written by George Ragsdale and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2011-05 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I grew up in a large family in Kansas City, Missouri. I had no siblings and my father was not in the home. My wonderful mother was a mere 15 years old when she became pregnant with me. She and I really did grow up together! I was in junior high school before I ever called her "mom" For my personal protection and development, my young single mother uprooted herself from her parents and relocated to Kansas City, Kansas, which enabled me to attend Sumner High School, the high school of both my parents. With much help from my family, neighbors, school teachers, and students, I developed a new and unexpected vision and an attitude to achieve after I had clearly become a truant. The Sumner high school students, particularly my classmates, were the most influential to my success. They gave me a wonderful and critical "vote of confidence" by electing me president of our class for four consecutive years. The students and teachers, with my mother's leadership, absolutely changed my view of myself! They instilled the seeds of ambition and accomplishment in my vision. My mother served to direct this new and unexpected energy. Clearly, based on existing evidence, my new ambition was not innate! It evolved from uncontrolled circumstances. Without a plan or an identified dream, I had a wonderfully successful thirty year marketing career with the IBM Corporation. I promoted the Universal Product Code (UPC) in the early days, well before it had become proven technology accepted in the worldwide retail industry.
