Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The incredible story of how Chiang Kai-shek's defeated army came to dominate the Asian drug trade After their defeat in China's civil war, remnants of Chiang Kai-shek's armies took refuge in Burma before being driven into Thailand and Laos. Based on recently declassified government documents, The Secret Army: Chiang Kai-shek and the Drug Warlords of the Golden Triangle reveals the shocking true story of what happened after the Chinese Nationalists lost the revolution. Supported by Taiwan, the CIA, and the Thai government, this former army reinvented itself as an anti-communist mercenary force, fighting into the 1980s, before eventually becoming the drug lords who made the Golden Triangle a household name. Offering a previously unseen look inside the post-war workings of the Kuomintang army, historians Richard Gibson and Wen-hua Chen explore how this fallen military group dominated the drug trade in Southeast Asia for more than three decades. Based on recently released, previously classified government documents Draws on interviews with active participants, as well as a variety of Chinese, Thai, and Burmese written sources Includes unique insights drawn from author Richard Gibson's personal experiences with anti-narcotics trafficking efforts in the Golden Triangle A fascinating look at an untold piece of Chinese—and drug-running—history, The Secret Army offers a revealing look into the history of one of the most infamous drug cartels in Asia.

Book Cold War and Decolonization in Guinea 1946 1958

Download or read book Cold War and Decolonization in Guinea 1946 1958 written by Elizabeth Schmidt and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the African Politics Conference Group’s Best Book Award In September 1958, Guinea claimed its independence, rejecting a constitution that would have relegated it to junior partnership in the French Community. In all the French empire, Guinea was the only territory to vote “No.” Orchestrating the “No” vote was the Guinean branch of the Rassemblement Démocratique Africain (RDA), an alliance of political parties with affiliates in French West and Equatorial Africa and the United Nations trusts of Togo and Cameroon. Although Guinea’s stance vis-à-vis the 1958 constitution has been recognized as unique, until now the historical roots of this phenomenon have not been adequately explained. Clearly written and free of jargon, Cold War and Decolonization in Guinea argues that Guinea’s vote for independence was the culmination of a decade-long struggle between local militants and political leaders for control of the political agenda. Since 1950, when RDA representatives in the French parliament severed their ties to the French Communist Party, conservative elements had dominated the RDA. In Guinea, local cadres had opposed the break. Victimized by the administration and sidelined by their own leaders, they quietly rebuilt the party from the base. Leftist militants, their voices muted throughout most of the decade, gained preeminence in 1958, when trade unionists, students, the party’s women’s and youth wings, and other grassroots actors pushed the Guinean RDA to endorse a “No” vote. Thus, Guinea’s rejection of the proposed constitution in favor of immediate independence was not an isolated aberration. Rather, it was the outcome of years of political mobilization by activists who, despite Cold War repression, ultimately pushed the Guinean RDA to the left. The significance of this highly original book, based on previously unexamined archival records and oral interviews with grassroots activists, extends far beyond its primary subject. In illuminating the Guinean case, Elizabeth Schmidt helps us understand the dynamics of decolonization and its legacy for postindependence nation-building in many parts of the developing world. Examining Guinean history from the bottom up, Schmidt considers local politics within the larger context of the Cold War, making her book suitable for courses in African history and politics, diplomatic history, and Cold War history.

Book Novell s Guide to TCP IP and IntranetWare

Download or read book Novell s Guide to TCP IP and IntranetWare written by Drew Heywood and published by Wiley. This book was released on 1997-10-06 with total page 822 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Novell wrote the book on networking with its IPX protocol. Then the Internet rewrote it with a little something called TCP/IP. Now Novell networking authority Drew Heywood has literally written the book on how network administrators like you can maintain a smoothly running internal network while taking advantage of the universality of the Internet's TCP/IP protocol. Novell's Guide to TCP/IP and IntranetWare helps you make a successful transition from NetWare 3 and 4 to TCP/IP à la IntranetWare. Even if you've been blissfully oblivious to the nuts and bolts of protocols like IPX -- let alone TCP/IP -- you'll soon have a solid understanding of how they work and how to configure all kinds of clients, servers, and routers. Heywood offers practical, in-depth coverage of essential NetWare TCP/IP topics, including * A layer-by-layer description of the TCP/IP protocol stack -- from the network access layer to the process/application layer * Implementing TCP/IP on NetWare servers and clients * Setting up the domain host configuration protocol * Managing NetWare TCP/IP and name services * Bridging between NetWare and UNIX * Creating and administering FTP and World Wide Web servers Plus, the bonus CD-ROM included with Novell's Guide to TCP/IP and IntranetWare features exclusive software from Novell: The IntranetWare Client Suite for Windows NT, Windows 95, DOS/Win 3.x, OS/2, and Mac OS. You also get Novell Application Launcher 1.1 and IntranetWare Wallpaper.
