Book excerpt: Folklore of Dorset explores the rich heritage of the county's traditions, seasonal customs and songs. Included are saints' lore and smugglers, wife sales, wrecking, witchcraft, wise men and West Gallery Music, hill figures, hempseed divination and holy wells, mummers' plays, May garlands and maypoles, Oosers and Oak Apple Day, bonfires and Beating the Bounds. The sources used include the poems and non-fiction of William Barnes, Thomas Hardy, the historian of Dorset John Hutchins, the Victorian and early twentieth-century folklorist John Udal and the Hammmond Brothers' collection of Dorset folksongs. The authors critically engage with the extent to which Hardy and Barnes can be regarded as primary sources for Dorset folklore. There is also considerable original research and use of oral material. Nearly 100 fascinating photographs illustrate the text and there is an appendix of a full mummers' play.

This book was released on 2024-05-30 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A few years ago the Dorset Federation of Womens Institutes organised a Local History Competition. Forty- nine Institutes responded and sent in contributions ranging in length from a few paragraphs to more than a hundred pages, The late Canon Sanctuary, who acted as one of the judges, was struck by the amount of attractive material produced, and urged its publication in book form. Largely as a result of his interest the cause of local history was not allowed to fade from the minds of Institute members. They were asked to send in further items as they discovered them, and a fair amount of extra information has been collected since the close of thc competition. In editing this little book I have relied predominantly upon the material thus presented to me. For instance, Roman roof-tiles are frequently unearthed in different parts of the County, but the Corscombe and Halstock Institute mentioned such a discovery, and it is that example which has therefore been quoted. In some cases, for reasons of space, I have been obliged to choose for quotation only one or two from among a number of given instances of similar discoveries, customs or events. Naturally it has been impossible to deal comprehensively with any of the subjects touched upon in these short chapters. I have aimed only at offering some kind of explanatory sequence, showing local events against a general background. It is hoped that all Institutes will be thus encouraged to work further along various simple lines of research, and to piece together the story of their own villages. The history of the towns has, I fear, received very little attention-and this for two reasons. First, the Womens Institute movement is primarily concerned with the people of the country-side. Secondly, in comparatively recent years, a good many monographs on particular towns have been published, and these books can be easily obtained from the County Library, as well as from the bookseller. Where the towns provide links in the story which would otherwise be missing, then references have been made to them, but adequate accounts of town history must be looked for elsewhere. Again, the subject of architecture has been entirely omitted, because this book is not attempting to take the place of the ordinary guide book. But any compiler of a village history should regard it as of first importance to collect all possible information about old buildings within the parish, and old barns and cottages should receive as careful investigation as old churches and manor houses. Among many people who have given most willing help I should like to thank particularly Mr. Richard Hine, of Beaminster, for reading through many of the chapters in manuscript, and for giving me some delightful fresh material Colonel C. D. Drew, Curator of the County Museum, who in the midst of a very busy season of excavation at Maiden Castle, found time to read the archaeological paragraphs and to offer most valuable suggestions thereupon and Miss M. Caine, chairman of the D .F. W. I. Education Sub-Committee, who has given much general help and has also made the index.

Book excerpt: A thrilling genre- and gender-bending historical novel with a modern twist. "Curiosities is pure delight. Anne Fleming draws us in so that we feel we are living the characters’ lives, whether braving the North Atlantic on a sailing ship, or stealing away for a forbidden tryst in the English countryside. And she does it all with a light touch that has the reader dancing through peril and pleasure." —Ann-Marie MacDonald "Curiosities arrives like a little sun from another period to warm the reader with the joy and pleasure of knowledge, even as it illuminates the terrors and confusion that arise from ignorance. Wonders and disasters tumble over fractured lives and loves, but Fleming’s conjuring of the past alive in our present is so deft and sure it might be witchcraft. I loved this book." —Marina Endicott Curiosities opens with a present-day amateur historian, Anne, who describes her unexpected discovery of five seventeenth-century manuscripts that, astonishingly, tell the same strange story from vastly different points of view. The five manuscripts spin this tale: after the Plague descends upon a village in England, two small children, Joan and Thomasina, are the only survivors. They bond tightly with each other and with a woman living in the forest nearby, who discovers and cares for them. When people return, the woman, as the lone adult alive, is accused of witchcraft, and the children are separated. Joan is taken on as a maid in the local manor house, and through her intelligence and skill becomes a companion to the fascinating Lady Margaret Long. Thomasina, sent on a sea voyage to Virginia, adopts boy’s clothing and navigates life as a man named Tom. Tom and Joan find each other as adults and fall in love, but are discovered together, naked, by a young clergyman. Shocked and horrified, he believes there is but one explanation for Tom’s state: Joan must be a witch. Desperate to save both himself and Joan, Tom runs as far away as he can, to the North Pole. And so it falls upon Anne, the contemporary historian, to piece together these interlocking stories, discover the fate of the lovers, and add her own layer of “truth” to a history and time period when there were no labels for who Tom and Joan might truly be.
