Download or read book Factory Girls written by E. Patricia Tsurumi and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigating the enormous contribution made by female textile workers to early industrialization in Meiji Japan, Patricia Tsurumi vividly documents not only their hardships but also their triumphs. While their skills and long hours created profits for factory owners that in turn benefited the state, the labor of these women and girls enabled their tenant farming families to continue paying high rents in the countryside. Tsurumi shows that through their experiences as Japan's first modern factory workers, these "factory girls" developed an identity that played a crucial role in the history of the Japanese working class. Much of this story is based on records the factory girls themselves left behind, including their songs. "It is a delight to receive a meticulous and comprehensive volume on the plight of women who pioneered [assembly plant] employment in Asia a century ago...."--L. L. Cornell, The Journal of Asian Studies "Tsurumi writes of these rural women with compassion and treats them as sentient, valuable individuals.... [Many] readers will find these pages informative and thought provoking."--Sally Ann Hastings, Monumenta Niponica
Download or read book Girls Dormitory written by Orrie Hitt and published by She Winked Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They came to college sweet, pretty and unsuspecting. But the house mother was strangely corrupt, and so was the caretaker. Sure, Peggy was a sweet kid, and pretty, too—which was why she would have made out just fine at a co-ed college. But Peggy had strange fears, disturbing inclinations; she preferred to go to an all-girls’ school, where she could live in an all-girls’ dormitory. It was a forgone conclusion that Helen Lee, an older dorm mate, would be able to seduce Peggy into behavior unbecoming such a sweet, young thing. After all, Helen had been initiated, like so many college girls, by the house mother herself. But, Helen also was carrying on with a man—and the man, Jerry Dixon, found himself fascinated by Peggy. Tragedy suddenly threatened the gay dormitory, to be resolved in an explosive climax promising fulfillment of girlish aspirations!

Download or read book Working Women in Jordan written by Fida J. Adely and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Across the world as here in the US, education and economic opportunity often go hand in hand. But at the same time that education creates opportunities, it can introduce new hurdles for young adults beginning to build their lives. In Working Women in Jordan, anthropologist Fida J. Adely turns to college-educated women in Jordan who migrate from rural provinces to Amman for work. Building on twelve years of ethnographic research in Jordan and extensive interviews with dozens of women, as well as some of their family members, Adely analyzes the effects of developments such as expanded educational opportunities, urbanization, privatization, and the restructuring of the labor market on women's life trajectories, gender roles, the institution of marriage, and kinship relations. Through these diverse stories, Adely tracks meaningful changes in Jordanian society. Jordanian women rarely live apart from their families before marrying, except to attend university; this increase in female mobility, with the support and sometimes encouragement of families, is indicative of significant shifts in gendered expectations. The women Adely profiles are not always motivated to migrate for entirely economic reasons, but also family and personal aspirations, recent family and personal histories, and perceived marriage opportunities. These motivations often come into conflict with one another, however--for example when a family's expectations for financial help compete with personal desires for a more affluent lifestyle. Drawing on the experiences of these young women, as well as extensive analysis of broader socio-economic and demographic shifts, Adely shows how educational structures can act as both facilitators and obstacles to labor force entry. Working Women in Jordan will require us to think more critically about what counts as development, and for whom"--
