Download or read book Beating Hearts written by Sherry F. Colb and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-08 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can someone who condemns hunting, animal farming, and animal experimentation also favor legal abortion, which is the deliberate destruction of a human fetus? The authors of Beating Hearts aim to reconcile this apparent conflict and examine the surprisingly similar strategic and tactical questions faced by activists in the pro-life and animal rights movements. Beating Hearts maintains that sentience, or the ability to have subjective experiences, grounds a being's entitlement to moral concern. The authors argue that nearly all human exploitation of animals is unjustified. Early abortions do not contradict the sentience principle because they precede fetal sentience, and Beating Hearts explains why the mere potential for sentience does not create moral entitlements. Late abortions do raise serious moral questions, but forcing a woman to carry a child to term is problematic as a form of gender-based exploitation. These ethical explorations lead to a wider discussion of the strategies deployed by the pro-life and animal rights movements. Should legal reforms precede or follow attitudinal changes? Do gory images win over or alienate supporters? Is violence ever principled? By probing the connections between debates about abortion and animal rights, Beating Hearts uses each highly contested set of questions to shed light on the other.

Book Performing Antiquity

  • Author : Samuel N. Dorf
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA

Download or read book Performing Antiquity written by Samuel N. Dorf and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performing Antiquity: Ancient Greek Music and Dance from Paris to Delphi, 1890-1930 investigates collaborations between French and American scholars of Greek antiquity (archaeologists, philologists, classicists, and musicologists), and the performing artists (dancers, composers, choreographers and musicians) who brought their research to life at the birth of Modernism. The book tells the story of performances taking place at academic conferences, the Paris Op ra, ancient amphitheaters in Delphi, and private homes. These musical and dance collaborations are built on reciprocity: the performers gain new insight into their craft while learning new techniques or repertoire and the scholars gain an opportunity to bring theory into experimental practice, that is, they have a chance see/hear/experience what they have studied and imagined. The performers receive the imprimatur of scholarship, the stamp of authenticity, and validation for their creative activities. Drawing from methods and theory from musicology, dance studies, performance studies, queer studies, archaeology, classics and art history the book shows how new scholarly methods and technologies altered the performance, and, ultimately, the reception of music and dance of the past. Acknowledging and critically examining the complex relationships performers and scholars had with the pasts they studied does not undermine their work. Rather, understanding our own limits, biases, dreams, obsessions, desires, loves, and fears enriches the ways we perform the past.

Book On Reading the Constitution

Download or read book On Reading the Constitution written by Laurence H. TRIBE and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our Constitution speaks in general terms of liberty and property, of the privileges and immunities of citizens, and of the equal protection of the laws--open-ended phrases that seem to invite readers to reflect in them their own visions and agendas. Yet, recognizing that the Constitution cannot be merely what its interpreters wish it to be, this volume's authors draw on literary and mathematical analogies to explore how the fundamental charter of American government should be construed today.

Book The Tyme Paradox

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christian Carrington
  • Publisher : iUniverse
  • Release : 2004
  • ISBN : 059529961X
  • Pages : 366 pages

Download or read book The Tyme Paradox written by Christian Carrington and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2004 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is an era of paradox. Current events contradict common sense. America is the sole superpower basking in extraordinary wealth and military success. Yet, external attack and internal corruption continue to plague its democracy. Nuclear disaster is looming. Financial fraud is endemic. Individual freedom has eroded. Tragically, President Jerry Ashton suddenly vanishes in a terrorist event. Paradoxically, two decades later, Ashton's agenda to reverse these trends has taken place. A beautiful, successful young woman, Kathryn Austin, encounters a reclusive, aging author completing the astounding chronicle of Michael Tyme, who played a crucial role in Ashton's disappearance. Embarking on a gripping quest, Kathryn seeks the purpose behind the paradox. Christian A. Carrington, in his carefully reasoned novel, delves deeply into recent paradoxical, yet troubling trends. America's military success has heightened the probability of nuclear terrorism. Unbridled corporate freedom has reined in the power of the people. Privatization has inadequately met public needs. Media consolidation threatens freedom of expression. The Tyme Paradox is a brilliantly told, highly original dramatic story, packed with mystery and suspense. A real page-turner, Tyme glimpses the consequences if we fail to act. A captivating read, the story offers perturbing paradoxes and beguiling possibilities for the probing mind. "It's a fascinating way to make the case for many of the vital principles and actions that haven't yet been adequately communicated by our politicians"-Mario M. Cuomo

Book Comical Co Stars of Television

Download or read book Comical Co Stars of Television written by Robert Pegg and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although some scholars credit Shakespeare with creating in Henry IV's Falstaff the first "second banana" character (reviving him for Henry IV Part Two), most television historians agree that the popular co-star was born in 1955 when Art Carney, as Ed Norton, first addressed Jackie Gleason with a "Hey, Ralphie-boy," on The Honeymooners. The phenomenon has proved to be one of the most enduring achievements of the American sitcom, and oftentimes so popular that the co-star becomes the star. Twenty-nine of those popular co-stars get all of the attention in this work. Each chapter focuses on one television character and the actor or actress who brought him or her to life, and provides critical analysis, biographical information and, in several instances, interviews with the actors and actresses themselves. It includes people like Art Carney of The Honeymooners, Don Knotts of The Andy Griffith Show, Ted Knight of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Max Baer of The Beverly Hillbillies, Vivian Vance and William Frawley of I Love Lucy, Ann B. Davis of The Brady Bunch, Jamie Farr of M*A*S*H, Ron Palillo of Welcome Back, Kotter, Jimmie Walker of Good Times, Tom Poston of Newhart and Michael Richards of Seinfeld, to name just a few.
