While many sought temporary refuge from Spanish oppression in the Low Countries, others became part of a Dutch diaspora, developing their commercial, spiritual, and domestic lives in England. The category "Dutch" catalyzed questions about English self-definition that were engendered less by large-scale cultural distinctions than by uncanny similarities. Doppelgänger Dilemmas uncovers the ways England's real and imagined proximities with the Dutch played a crucial role in the making of English ethnicity. Marjorie Rubright explores the tensions of Anglo-Dutch relations that emerged in the form of puns, double entendres, cognates, homophones, copies, palimpsests, doppelgängers, and other doublings of character and kind. Specific brotherhoods seek to keep such knowledge to themselves in order to exert power and spread materialism. But this knowledge is critical, says Steiner, if the geographical doppelgänger and its challenges are to be understood.

This study charts the development of the double from its origins in the Romantic period, through its more marginal - but nonetheless significant - manifestations in the post-Romantic culture, to its revival at the fin-de-siècle and transfer to the silent screen. The book features an introduction to the practice and theory underlying the use of the Doppelgänger, with particular reference to psychoanalysis, followed by chapters on Jean Paul, Hoffmann, Kleist, poetic realism (Droste-Hülshoff, Keller, Storm) and modernism (Kafka, Rilke, Hoffmannsthal, Schnitzler, Meyrink, Werfal). This study shows that the often underestimated figure of the double may provide a key to the epistomological, aesthetic and psychosexual structures of the texts it visits and revisits, with a particular focus on its effects in the fields of vision and language.

Furthermore, this study has been conducted primarily from a masculist point of view which limits both the definition of the Doppelganger and consequently, the scope of the work included in the research. This study examines the Doppelganger as a complex phenomenon in the works of Joseph Conrad, Fyodor Dostoevsky, and Virginia Woolf. Primarily, this study challenges the notion that the Doppelganger always represents a conflict, an idea supported by the limited scope of psychoanalytic criticism. By bringing a feminist perspective to exploration of the motif, this study suggests that conflict between the entities that comprise the Doppelganger do not have to be in conflict with one another; rather, they are in conflict with societies which have proven themselves deficient in meeting individual needs. The Doppelganger motif is a study in relationships between humans; thus, to limit the scope of research to only psychoanalysis limits understanding of the complexity of relationships. Civilization is both the product and the source of the framework from which these relationships arise. The masculist view tends to support relationships based on power and control; a more balanced view suggests that self-empowerment, or autonomy, arises from communal consent and cooperation, as is evidenced in the texts incorporated in this study"--Document.

Book excerpt: French philosophy since World War II has been preoccupied with the issue of difference. Specifically, it has wanted to promote or to leave room for ways of living and of being that differ from those usually seen in contemporary Western society. Given the experience of the Holocaust, the motivation for such a preoccupation is not difficult to see. For some thinkers, especially Jean-Luc Nancy, Jacques Derrida, Emmanuel Levinas, and Gilles Deleuze, this preoccupation has led to a mode of philosophizing that privileges difference as a philosophical category. Nancy privileges difference as a mode of conceiving community, Derrida as a mode of conceiving linguistic meaning, Levinas as a mode of conceiving ethics, and Deleuze as a mode of conceiving ontology. Reconsidering Difference has a twofold task, the primary one critical and the secondary one reconstructive. The critical task is to show that these various privilegings are philosophical failures. They wind up, for reasons unique to each position, endorsing positions that are either incoherent or implausible. Todd May considers the incoherencies of each position and offers an alternative approach. His reconstructive task, which he calls &"contingent holism,&" takes the phenomena under investigation&—community, language, ethics, and ontology&—and sketches a way of reconceiving them that preserves the motivations of the rejected positions without falling into the problems that beset them.
