Moves to Chicago where he is befriended by members of Capone's South Side gang. Opening a soup kitchen and a hotel with their help, he is arrested and jailed for selling illegal alcohol. After his released and gang wars grow more heated, he is invited by a gang member to be caretaker for a retreat in the village of Couderay in northern Wisconsin. Moving there, he oversees building and improvements to the property until violating a provision of his employment, when he is fired. He then opens and operates a tavern in the village, and sells illegally poached deer. World War 2 weakens his business, forcing him to find additional income. He then works harvesting wheat in western US while Lola runs tavern. The war provides an opportunity to work construction in Alaska for the military. Upon his return, he separates from Lola and takes up with another woman. Lola moves in with son in southern Wisconsin, and eventually takes up with a man who was a "collector" for the Capone organization in Chicago. After traveling the country with him, he is killed in Chicago, and Lola, now in her 60s, is resigned to living a quiet life with her son and daughter-n-law. Meanwhile, Charlie's health deteriorates and the book ends with Charlie dying an angry and bitter man.
