Book excerpt: Urban Los Angeles is the setting in which Elaine Miller has collected her narratives from Mexican-Americans. The Mexican folk tradition, varied and richly expressive of the inner life not only of a people but also of the individual as each lives it and personalizes it, is abundantly present in the United States. Since it is in the urban centers that most Mexican-Americans have lived, this collection represents an important contribution to the study of that tradition and to the study of the changes urban life effects on traditional folklore. The collection includes sixty-two legendary narratives and twenty traditional tales. The legendary narratives deal with the virgins and saints as well as with such familiar characters as the vanishing hitchhiker, the headless horseman, and the llorona. Familiar characters appear in the traditional tales—Juan del Oso, Blancaflor, Pedro de Ordimalas, and others. Elaine Miller concludes that the traditional tales are dying out in the city because tale telling itself is not suited to the fast pace of modern urban life, and the situations and characters in the tales are not perceived by the people to be meaningfully related to the everyday challenges and concerns of that life. The legendary tales survive longer in an urban setting because, although containing fantastic elements, they are related to the beliefs and hopes of the narrator—even in the city one may be led to buried treasure on some dark night by a mysterious woman. The penchant of the informants for the fantastic in many of their tales often reflects their hopes and fears, such as their dreams of suddenly acquiring wealth or their fears of being haunted by the dead. Miller closely observes the teller's relation to the stories—to the duendes, the ánimas, Death, God, the devil—and she notes the tension on the part of the informant in his relation to their religion. The material is documented according to several standard tale and motif indices and is placed within the context of the larger body of Hispanic folk tradition by the citation of parallel versions throughout the Hispanic world. The tales, transcribed from taped interviews, are presented in colloquial Spanish accompanied by summaries in English.

This book explores how rural peoples experience economic and cultural change as their country joins the global market, focusing on their thoughts about work and sustenance as a way of learning about Guatemala’s changing economy. For more than a decade, Liliana Goldín observed in highland towns both the intensification of various forms of production and their growing links to wider markets. In this first book to compare economic ideology across a range of production systems, she examines how people make a living and how they think about their options, practices, and constraints. Drawing on interviews and surveys—even retellings of traditional narratives—she reveals how contemporary Maya respond to the increasingly globalized yet locally circumscribed conditions in which they work. Goldín presents four case studies: cottage industries devoted to garment production, vegetable growing for internal and border markets reached through direct commerce, crops grown for export, and wage labor in garment assembly factories. By comparing generational and gendered differences among workers, she reveals not only complexities of change but also how these complexities arereflected in changing attitudes, understandings, and aspirations that characterize people’s economic ideology. Further, she shows that as rural people take on diverse economic activities, they also reinterpret their views on such matters as accumulation, cooperation, competition, division of labor, and community solidarity. Global Maya explores global processes in local terms, revealing the interplay of traditional values, household economics, and the inescapable conditions of demographic growth, a shrinking land base, and a global economy always looking for cheap labor. It offers a wealth of new insights not only for Maya scholars but also for anyone concerned with the effects of globalization on the Third World.

La directora de esa institución odiaba tanto a Martha como a su hijo. Pero la directora, cuando Martha murió, el diagnostico que le dieron de su muerte no le agradó. La directora puso al abogado de la institución para que se encargara del caso. Y el abogado rápido actuó, encontrando la verdadera razón y demandando al hospital por una fuerte suma de dinero. Luego la directora, quien era egoísta y ambiciosa, creía que iba a disfrutar de ese dinero. Pero el señor juez puso el dinero en una cuenta del banco para cuando el niño sea mayor de edad. El niño se escapó de la institución a la edad de doce años. Y si ustedes quieren saber todas las demás escenas existentes que ocurrieron en el transcurso del libro tendrán que leer el libro.

El supo ganar los espacios en el tiempo. Es educador, por lo que se propuso cursar los niveles educativos que exige su profesión; desde terminar la Primaria, la Secundaria, la Preparatoria, se recibió de Licenciado en Pedagogía y de Sociología y con la Especialidad en Ciencias Sociales, en la Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas, también se graduó como profesor de Educación Media y con la Especialidad en Orientación Vocacional, en la Normal Superior de Tamaulipas. Incursionó en el Sistema Educativo Mexicano, la Secretaría de Educación Pública lo distinguió enviándolo a un curso de excelencia, y participó en comisiones con distintos fines a nivel nacional. Más tarde, sacó su Maestría en Divinidades de la Universidad de Hawaii en el Campus de Oklahoma City, y fue Doctorado en Teología por La Escuela de Biblia, Teología, Seminario y Universidad, de Riverside, California Estados Unidos, Se le considera cofundador de la obra de Las Asambleas de Dios en el Estado de Tabasco, fundó la Iglesia en Teapa, Tabasco, pastoreó en Linares, Nuevo León, en Piedras Negras, Coahuila. En Acapulco, Guerrero, en Reynosa Tamaulipas, ocho años fue director de un Instituto Bíblico en Reynosa, fundó el Instituto Bíblico Emaús y por 26 años fue su director. Es Presidente de "EAGLES INTERNATIONAL CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY". Sus hijos son: Josué, Benjamín, Roberto y Lily, todos con diferentes grados educativos y diferentes posiciones en calidad de siervos del Señor, dedicados al ministerio. Book excerpt: The Mexican Transpacific considers the influence of a Japanese ethnic background or lack thereof in the cultural production of several twentieth- and twenty-first-century Mexican authors, performers, and visual artists. Despite Japanese Mexicans’ unquestionable influence on Mexico’s history and culture and the historical studies recently published on this Nikkei community, the study of its cultural production and therefore its self-definition has been, for the most part, overlooked. This book, a continuation of author Ignacio López-Calvo’s previous research on cultural production by Latin American authors of Asian ancestry, focuses mostly on literature, theater, and visual arts produced by Japanese immigrants in Mexico and their descendants, rather than on the Japanese community as a mere object of study. With this interdisciplinary project, López-Calvo aims to bring to the fore this silenced community’s voice and agency to historicize its own experience.
