Book Don t Upset Renee

Download or read book Don t Upset Renee written by Michael Sylvester and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2010-04-28 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You may not have heard of emotional oppression. You will have heard of abuse and bullying. Emotional oppression isn’t really either of these, but it’s more common than both of them. It is a state of mind that has been fed into us by parents, teachers, bosses, figures of authority, which was planted in them by their parents, teachers, bosses, figures of authority, and so on down the line. It betrays itself in countless everyday comments such as ‘who do you think you are?’, ‘what could you possibly do?’, ‘you could have tried harder’ or ‘it never did me any harm’. We are all oppressed and we can all be oppressors, pointlessly recycling this judgmental emotional inheritance of misunderstanding and prejudice. Combining portraits of long-suffering family life in Nottinghamshire either side of the second world war - and of the intimidating business world of the 1970s and 80s – Don’t Upset Renee traces the roots of Michael Sylvester’s oppression at the hands of his mother and analyses the effects on himself and those around him in his personal and business life. His story aims to encourage people to think about why they behave in certain ways, and why other people might behave in certain ways, with a view to creating better understanding among us – happier families and more productive workplaces.

Book Mom Still Likes You Best

Download or read book Mom Still Likes You Best written by Jane Isay and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2011-04-19 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of Walking on Eggshells—a must-read for anyone blessed with or burdened by a sibling that explores the sometimes heartbreaking but always meaningful ties between brothers and sisters. There’s a myth that good sibling relations do not include conflict, annoyance, resentment, or mixed feelings. Jane Isay argues that this is a destructive belief, one that makes people doubt the strength of their connection to those they grew up with. Siblings may love and hate, fight and forgive, but they never forget their early bonds. Based on scores of interviews with people of all ages, Mom Still Likes You Best features real-life stories that show how differences caused by family feuds, marriages, distance, or ancient history can be overcome in adulthood. The result is a clear-eyed but compassionate portrait of brothers and sisters in love and war—and a celebration of the possibilities that even the most complicated sibling relationships can offer.

Book Don t Look Behind You

Download or read book Don t Look Behind You written by Ann Rule and published by Gallery Books. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The #1 New York Times bestselling author and true crime master Ann Rule presents her fifteenth volume of the acclaimed Crime Files series focusing on disturbing stories of people in danger, sometimes from strangers and sometimes from the people they know and love. Walking home on a dark night, you hear footsteps coming up behind you. As they get closer, your heart pounds harder. Is it a dangerous stranger or someone you know and trust? The answer is as simple as turning around, but don’t look behind you…run. With her signature in-depth research and compelling writing, Ann Rule chronicles fateful encounters with the secret predators hiding in plain sight. First in line is a stunning case that spanned thirty years and took one determined detective to four states—ending, finally, in Alaska—where he unraveled not one but two murders. A second case appears to begin and end with the hunt for the Green River Killer, focusing on a Washington State man who was once cleared as a suspect in that deadly chain of homicides. In another true story, a petite woman went to a tavern, looking only for conversation and fun. Instead, she met violent death in the form of a seven-foot tall man who had seemed shy and harmless. You’ll feel a chill as you uncover these and numerous other cases of unfortunate victims who made one tragic mistake: trusting the wrong person—even someone they thought they knew.

Book excerpt: When a trusted physician tells Renée Schuls-Jacobson that he has the solution for her chronic insomnia -- a "tried and true medication without any side effects," she believes him. For seven years, she takes her medication exactly as prescribed until, one day, she learns that her doctor is wrong: long-term benzodiazepine use causes all kinds of problems including physical dependence, withdrawal reactions as well as changes in memory and cognition. With the help of an addiction specialist, Renée embarks on a slow, medically supervised taper, only to find herself cognitively scrambled and stuck in the nightmare of benzodiazepine withdrawal. For nearly four years, she endures hundreds of terrifying physical, emotional and psychological symptoms - none of which were present before taking the medication. While healing from an iatrogenic brain injury that is not widely recognized by doctors, Renée leaves everything familiar behind and goes on a journey, meeting scientists and sages, healers and hucksters, who all teach her the same hard lesson: to stop seeking the help of experts and to trust her intuition. In PSYCHIATRIZED: Waking Up After a Decade of Bad Medicine, Renée Schuls-Jacobson contemplates the cost of compliance and exposes the truth about the dangers of psychiatric drugs as well as a discontinuation syndrome, which affects thousands of men and women worldwide.
