Book Ask a Manager

Download or read book Ask a Manager written by Alison Green and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together

Two years later, he saddled a real horse and became a real “cowboy”. As a teenager, he found himself conscripted into the Chilean Army. While there, he experienced many abuses of power. The witnessing of the crushing of an aspiring young soldier’s military dreams was the final straw. This drove him to persuade the country’s president, Eduardo Frei Montalva, to arrange for his discharge. Not satisfied with being a dreamer in Chile’s Central Valley, he travelled from the Southern to the Northern Hemisphere. Journeying through the Amazon, he marveled at the exotic creatures, was intrigued at the mysterious colours of the Amazon River, yet was horrified by the brutality of man he experienced along the way. While penniless in Central America, yet wanting to get to the United States, he became a dreamer again. He and a group of young friends put together a crazy form of transportation that worked, just not the way they expected. Eventually, he made it to Canada the easy way—by plane. In his new home he met the girl of his dreams. She was so nice, he actually married her twice! Then he wrote his entire improbable story in a book and called it “A Risk Taker’s Journey”. What a life! What a story! You’ve got to read it.

Book The Accidental Footballer

Download or read book The Accidental Footballer written by Pat Nevin and published by Monoray. This book was released on 2021-05-20 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *** THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER 'A heroic outsider - a pleasure to read.' - The Guardian 'A fulsome evocation of football before the Premier League.' - The i 'Such a good storyteller...joyous.' - Financial Times 'Honest, raw, revealing and very funny. How to live a life and career to the full. Insightful book about the most successful outsider inside football ever...' - Henry Winter, Chief Football Writer, The Times 'Pat is a wonderful one-off...and this is the story of why that is.' - John Murray, Chief Sports Correspondent, BBC Radio 5 Live 'Unusually vibrant and elegant with heroic doses of humour, insight and self-effacement, this is an absolute must-read for the football connoisseur.' - Omid Djalili 'The biggest influence of my professional career both on and off the pitch.' - Graeme Le Saux 'I grew up captivated by Pat Nevin the player. As a man he taught me even more about the beauty of the game. One of football's great mavericks, and Chelsea's greatest players. And he can spin a mean tune too.' - Sam Matterface 'I used to walk miles to see Pat Nevin play football and I'd do the same now to read his thoughts. Always challenging, always entertaining.' - Lord Sebastian Coe 'A refreshingly honest and thought-provoking autobiography. As deftly delivered as some of Pat's ball skills in his 1980's heyday.' - ToffeeWeb Pat Nevin never wanted to be a professional footballer. His future was clear, he'd become a teacher like his brothers. There was only one problem with this - Pat was far too good to avoid attention. Raised in Glasgow's East End, Pat loved the game, playing for hours and obsessively following Celtic. But as he grew up, he also loved Joy Division, wearing his Indie 'gloom boom' coat and going on marches - hardly typical footballer behaviour! Placed firmly in the 80s and 90s, before the advent of the Premier League, and often with racism and violence present, Pat Nevin writes with honesty, insight and wry humour. We are transported vividly to Chelsea and Everton, and colourfully diverted by John Peel, Morrissey and nights out at the Hacienda. The Accidental Footballer is a different kind of football memoir. Capturing all the joys of professional football as well as its contradictions and conflicts, it's about being defined by your actions, not your job, and is the perfect reminder of how life can throw you the most extraordinary surprises, when you least expect it.

Book How to Kill the Giant in Your Life

Download or read book How to Kill the Giant in Your Life written by Carolyne English and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2007-02 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was led to write, "How to Kill The Giant In Your Life," because God know that our life is like that of David, facing the giant, (the enemy in our daily walk. We are heirs in the Kingdom of God, because we are His children. God has given us authority, but we refuse to use it, yet we pray for things or situations that God has given us the authority to handle or change ourselves. We live by faith and not by sight. If we have the faith to believe and move our faith out of "Neutral" and put it in "Drive," we can have the same victory God gave David. In Isaiah 54:17, "No weapon formed against you shall prosper and every tongue which rises against you in judgement, "you shall condemn." Did God say he will condemn or you shall condemn. Matthew 18:17, "Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." Did God say, He will bind or loose or did He say whatever you bind or you loose? I think being a Teacher is one of the greatest gifts of all. In order to understand God, we first must know who God is and in order to know who God is, we first must take the time to study the Word. The Book of Genesis teaches about God's Royalty Family, His Creation & His Kindgom. We pray a simple prayer, because God deals with the heart and God still hear our prayers. We can pray with a sincere heart and cry out to God and He still rescues us and answers us. Jeremiah 33:3, "Call unto Me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not." As we grow spiritually, our prayer life changes the same way as we mature in our walk with Christ. We drank milk as babes and when the times comes, we are no longer drinking milk, but we began to eat meat. This is the same process for our spiritual growth, because we are no longer babes in Christ. When we become mature Christians, we began to pray scriptural prayers, which are more effective, but we have to abide in the Word of God. Sometimes we have to wait on our prayers to be answered, because God is a timely God. He is eternal and our time is not His time. Sometimes God moves swiftly and He hears the cry of the righteous. James 5:16, "The effectual prayer of a righteous man availeth much." I remembered when I first come to Christ, I did not understand some of the Biblical terminology of the Word, or it's meaning, and I knew there was a lot to learn. Yet, in my learning there were times I became frustrated, because I did not understand the Bible. The course, English during my adolescent years in school seem to be the hardest Language to learn, because of conjunctions, pronouns, verbs, adverbs and adjectives and when I stated reading the Bible, I thought, "Oh my God, how do you pronounce the names and what do these parables mean?" I found out that if you ask God for understanding of His Word, He will give you understanding, because it is His will for us to know the will of God and not to walk in ignorance of His Word. This book is about learning how to fight the enemy, how to use God's weapon and knowing the weapons of God. It is also about learning as you grow spiritually. 2 Corinthians 10:4, "For the weapons (God's Word) of our warfare (war against the enemy -satan) are not carnal (worldly or earthly), but mightly through the pulling down of strongholds (strong defensive structure of protection). We are fighting against things that cannot be seen by the naked or natural eyes. Have you ever seen someone who, "Out of the blues" (happened suddenly), attack you mentally or physically and there was actually, no logical reason for this strange behavior? Well, it was not the person in the natural that attacked you, but the enemy that used this person. Read 2 Corinthians 10:4 again to find out who the enemy is. This is what needs to be taught in churches so that Christians can become Prayer Warriors. I pray that this book will inspire those who are seeking God to learn and know th

Book The Beckmeyer Family Complete Collection

Download or read book The Beckmeyer Family Complete Collection written by Bree Kraemer and published by Bree Kraemer. This book was released on 2023-05-25 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hooked Barrett Beckmeyer lived his whole life knowing what he wanted. He wanted to be outside, on the lake at his family's resort. Fishing was his life. In the summer, in the winter, it didn't matter. He loved it. He didn't know anything was missing. Until Eden. One night with her and nothing was the same. Eden Craig wasn't looking for more than a night of fun. That was all Barrett was supposed to be. One night and then forget him. Only forgetting him was impossible. And when she's asked to be the lead architect on an addition at Maple Ridge Resort, she knows avoiding him will be inevitable. She was hooked from the second he sat down next to her, but did he feel the same? Sparked Nina Beckmeyer had been in love since she'd been sixteen. There was just one problem. The guy had no idea. After spending two summers and countless weekends with her family, Donovan Stewart was gone in the blink of an eye. All these years later, she's doing just fine, even if all her dreams are of a man she knows she can never have. Until he shows back up. Donovan has loved Nina since the moment he saw her thirteen years ago. It happened in a flash and has never gone away. But she's his friend's sister, and there is no way Emmett would be okay with them together. Or would he? When he arrives in town as a favor to Nina's family, the same spark of awareness that had been there so many years ago is even stronger. Donovan knows it's now or never, and he's not willing to settle for never. Is the love they each secretly felt all those years ago a love that is real? Shocked Emmett Beckmeyer had always been what most people would call stable. He came to work every day at his family's resort, did his job, had just the right amount of fun, and gave good advice. That all changed after a small fire in the newly added spa where his sister and the electrician were trapped. Since that moment, nothing has been the same. Maybe it was the fire telling him life was short or maybe it was the gorgeous, sexy electrician, Morgan, who he couldn't stop thinking of. He wanted her badly but knew from past experience that women weren't looking for long-term when it came to him. Something that had held him back long enough. Morgan's life was a mess. She'd moved to the small Wisconsin town of Lyden to meet her real dad, and from there, her life had been twisted every which way but up. After the fire, she was having a hard time sleeping and dealing with all that was on her plate. The very last thing she needed was to be having dreams about Emmett Beckmeyer, the man who saved her from the fire. He despised her, or at least that's what she thought. Until a party at his parent's house, where that all changed. Kneaded Decker Beckmeyer has a great life. He loves his family and his job. But every day, he remembers the past and how he almost gave it up for the wrong woman. He's vowed to never let another woman into his heart again, even though he yearns for love and a family of his own. When he does his sister an innocent favor, that all changes. Natasha can't believe her life has come to this. An ex-boyfriend is harassing her, and her once-perfect life is now in shambles. Enter Decker Beckmeyer. He's gorgeous, sexy, and has hair that any woman would be envious of. And he wants her to come work for Maple Ridge Resort and Spa. The timing couldn't be more perfect. There's just one problem. He spends his days ignoring her, while she spends all of hers obsessing over what it would be like to be with him. That is until she's had enough and confronts him, only to find out that maybe he's not as immune to her as she thought. Take one last ride with the Beckmeyer Family as Decker finally gets his happy ending.

Book excerpt: A funny and engaging story about the pursuit of style. 'I headed alone for Knightsbridge - a strange choice for a skint teenager - and it was there that I fell in love for the first time. The dress was little, black and slightly frou-frou, and I knew on sight that it was the one.' Ever wondered why you have three versions of the same top but want to buy another? Or why some shop mirrors are more flattering than others? And whether we really only wear 20 per cent of our wardrobe 80 per cent of the time? Emily Stott is passionate about high street fashion. Her Saturday morning shopping trips as a child led to jobs both on the shop floor and in the offices of upmarket stores. But it was while writing about fashion brands for magazines and simultaneously spying as a mystery shopper that she gained a whole new insight into fashion retail. Now a stylist, Emily Stott writes with warmth and wit on the pleasures of dressing up, the trials of growing up and learning how to shop for yourself. Full of insider knowledge, Shopped is a wonderfully entertaining memoir about a life of clothes. You'll never shop in the same way again.
