Download or read book Becoming Bicultural written by Paul R. Smokowski and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2011-02-08 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the United States has always been a nation of immigrants, the recent demographic shifts resulting in burgeoning young Latino and Asian populations have literally changed the face of the nation. This wave of massive immigration has led to a nationwide struggle with the need to become bicultural, a difficult and sometimes painful process of navigating between ethnic cultures. While some Latino adolescents become alienated and turn to antisocial behavior and substance use, others go on to excel in school, have successful careers, and build healthy families. Drawing on both quantitative and qualitative data ranging from surveys to extensive interviews with immigrant families, Becoming Bicultural explores the individual psychology, family dynamics, and societal messages behind bicultural development and sheds light on the factors that lead to positive or negative consequences for immigrant youth. Paul R. Smokowski and Martica Bacallao illuminate how immigrant families, and American communities in general, become bicultural and use their bicultural skills to succeed in their new surroundings The volume concludes by offering a model for intervention with immigrant teens and their families which enhances their bicultural skills.

Download or read book The Autistic Atheist written by Emily Cooper and published by McMillan Book writing. This book was released on 2024-09-11 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion has been a fundamental aspect of human societies throughout history, but is on the decline in the modern scientific era. Simultaneously, Autism rates are on the rise, raising questions about whether this increase is due to improved diagnosis and recognition of the condition or if reflects an actual rise in prevalence. We explore the complexities of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), its potential causes, and the implications it holds for the future of humanity and evolution. Autism is a difference in intuitive thinking and understanding of the world. The differences in thinking from the point of view of the general population are often seen as deficits. Drawing on work from Ara Norenzayan this book explores the hypothesis that the deficits in theory of mind that Autistic people experience constrain their ability to believe in a God and accept religious claims. This book is an exploration of the evolutionary psychology of religion and Autism. What is the future of religion and its place in human evolution?

Download or read book Providing Sound Foundations for Cryptography written by Oded Goldreich and published by Morgan & Claypool. This book was released on 2019-09-13 with total page 838 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cryptography is concerned with the construction of schemes that withstand any abuse. A cryptographic scheme is constructed so as to maintain a desired functionality, even under malicious attempts aimed at making it deviate from its prescribed behavior. The design of cryptographic systems must be based on firm foundations, whereas ad hoc approaches and heuristics are a very dangerous way to go. These foundations were developed mostly in the 1980s, in works that are all co-authored by Shafi Goldwasser and/or Silvio Micali. These works have transformed cryptography from an engineering discipline, lacking sound theoretical foundations, into a scientific field possessing a well-founded theory, which influences practice as well as contributes to other areas of theoretical computer science. This book celebrates these works, which were the basis for bestowing the 2012 A.M. Turing Award upon Shafi Goldwasser and Silvio Micali. A significant portion of this book reproduces some of these works, and another portion consists of scientific perspectives by some of their former students. The highlight of the book is provided by a few chapters that allow the readers to meet Shafi and Silvio in person. These include interviews with them, their biographies and their Turing Award lectures.
